Break Time!

Players are on a twenty-minute break. When they return, we should start to see some more significant movement in the stacks.

One Last Sweep

With six minutes left in the level (and late registration extending through the break) we don't plan to run across too many more surprises in the field. But another sweep of the Miranda Room has turned up these late entrants:

Sam Grizzle
Richard Ashby
Jeff Lisandro
Dario Alioto
Michael Binger

And all on the same table are:

Michael Craig
Jen Harman
Sam Simon
Ray Davis

Harman and Davis were joking with the dealer. "This is my driver," said Harman, pointing at Davis. Davis laughed and said, "Yeah. I'm movin' up from Mac Donalds. Yes, I called it 'Mac'."

Even More Players?!

Shirley Rosario during Event 21, $3,000 H.O.R.S.E.
Shirley Rosario during Event 21, $3,000 H.O.R.S.E.
Some players seem to keep popping up out of the field at us. We're not sure if they're late arrivals or we missed them on our first sweeps. But please welcome to the party:

Noah Schwartz
Max Stern
Sam Khouiss
Anna Wroblewski
Jimmy Fricke
Chris Amaral

There are plenty of champions in the room, as befitting a WSOP tournament. One such champion is Shirley Rosario, who took first place in the $1,000 H.O.R.S.E. tournament at the California State Poker Championships just a month ago. Rosario has already notched one cash during the 2009 WSOP -- she finished in 20th place in Event 25, $2,500 O.E. Rosario considers the split-pot games to be her best in the H.O.R.S.E. rotation.

There hasn't been much movement so far in Rosario's stack, but it's still very early.

Rousso Regrouping

Stud Hi-Lo:

Vanessa Rousso: x-x / {J-Clubs} {7-Clubs} {9-Spades} {10-Diamonds} / x
Opponent: x-x / {A-Clubs} {3-Clubs} {5-Spades} {5-Diamonds} / x

The razz round didn't seem to treat Vanessa Rousso very well, but she's rebounded a bit in Stud Hi/Lo. She called a bet on fifth street and then raised when her opponent led out again on sixth street. He called that raise, but slowly shook his head after squeezing his river card. In the face of a final bet from Rousso, he mucked.

Rousso is back up to about the starting stack of 4,500.

Poker?

Right, this is a poker tournament so perhaps we should tell you about some of the poker being played. In the stud round, James Van Alstyne took down a huge pot (getting three bets in on sixth street) after starting with rolled up jacks. He's up to 5,600 in chips after that pot.

Sartorial Notes

The temperature in the Brasilia Room and Amazon Room fluctuates from day to day. Today's it is quite cold in the Brasilia Room -- no surprise to see many people wearing long sleeves.

Scattered amongst all of those hoodies, fleeces and long-sleeved shirts are some more colorful outfits. We spotted a black "kidrobot" sweatshirt festooned with large pink, blue and yellow pills; a player wearing green hat that reads "The Shamrock Kid" and a white necktie replete with various playing cards; and of course Marcel Luske with his trademark upside-down sunglasses.

Perhaps the most interesting outfit belongs to an older gentleman in the back left corner of Brasilia. He's wearing a straw hat with a pair of black fuzzy dice attached to the brim and a green and yellow alligator (dragon?) perched on top. About a half dozen papier-mache roses are stuffed into each of his shirt pockets and into a backpack he has on the floor behind his seat.

Photos forthcoming.

The 700 Club

There's still an hour left in late registration, and already the number of entrants for this event has exceeded 700. The current tally is 706; tournament staff gave me their predictions (prior to Level 1) of about 800 runners total. We probably won't get there but 750 is a real possibility.
