Day 2 Completed

Day 2 Suspended

It's become a recurring theme here at the 2009 World Series of Poker -- Day 2s of tournaments that don't make it to playing down all the way to the scheduled final table. Such is the case here tonight in Event 31, $1,500 H.O.R.S.E.

We knew we were in for a challenge when 221 players returned at 2pm to start the day. Eric Kurtzman was leading them all with 57,000 chips, with Andy Black close behind in second place. Neither player made it to the final three tables returning tomorrow.

At the end of the night, Fabrice Soulier and Brian Malcolm were competing for the chip lead, each with about a quarter million in chips. Also still alive: Shannon Shorr, Vanessa Rousso, Paul Darden, and Bryan Micon and 17 other players, each dreaming about mounting the podium in two days time to claim a gold bracelet.

The suspension in play means our Day 3 restart will be pushed up one hour. We'll see you back at the Rio at 1pm tomorrow for a very, very long Day 3.

Quoth the Raven (Never Moore)

Peter Moore is busted from the tournament on the last hand of the night. He was very, very short, but managed to make the next pay jump by busting in 24th place. And with that, we're pausing for the night.

Vassilios Lazarou Eliminated

Vassilios Lazarou
Vassilios Lazarou
Stud Hi/Lo:

Vassilios Lazarou: ({Q-Hearts}-X) {Q-Diamonds} {6-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds} {A-Diamonds} (X)
Opponent: ({J-Spades} {J-Clubs}) {J-Diamonds} {3-Hearts} {9-Hearts} {4-Diamonds} ({3-Clubs})
Opponent: ({2-Clubs} {6-Clubs}) {4-Hearts} {A-Hearts} {Q-Clubs} {9-Spades} ({7-Diamonds})

Vassilios Lazarou couldn't stay in the game after his opponent that was rolled up pulled a full house on the river. Lazarou was out in 25th place and with his elimination, the players will now redraw at three tables.

Robert Lewis Eliminated

Razz:

It was not the ending that Robert Lewis was hoping for. He started 7-2 / 4 in razz and completed. Mitch Schock called with 7-A / 4. The two players had identical 4-Q-9 boards by fifth street, where Lewis was all in. He was drawing dead by the river, as Schock improved to an 8-7 and Lewis was drawing at a 9. He is the 26th-place finisher.

Black, Devonshire Busto

It was a long day for Andy Black. He started the day as one of the chip leaders, but every time we counted him, his stack didn't seem to change very much. That wasn't a problem in the early levels, when he had 50-60 big bets in his stack. It became much more of a problem later in the day, with limits at a whopping 5,000 and 10,000. Black couldn't accumulate the chips he needed. He's now out.

It was much the same story for Bryan Devonshire, with exactly the same result. He's also out.

Tempers Taut

It's late. Players have been playing poker all day. They're tired. It's natural that there are going to be a few disputes. We just witnessed one at 182, where one player announced raise while putting chips out in front of his hand. He didn't have enough chips for the raise, so he went back to his stack to complete the raise.

The other player in the hand, the big blind, yelled it was a string raise. The dealer agreed, prompting the small blind to sputter with rage. A floor was summoned, with the small blind jamming his finger in the face of the dealer. After instructing the small blind to calm down, the floor listened to the story and ruled that the verbal raise declaration was binding.

Now it was the big blind's turn to steam. He argued that it was the wrong ruling, but the floor would not budge. "I've made my decision, sir. You can call or fold."

"Or raise," Bryan Micon helpfully added from the other end of the table.

Maier's Kings Cracked

Hold'em:

It hasn't been the best hour for Lana Maier. Her stack seems to slowly be shrinking. We just walked by her table in time to see Maier paying off Fabrice Soulier on the river of a {3-?} {5-?} {6-?} {4-?} ? board. Maier turned up the black kings, which were no good against Soulier's {7-Clubs} {4-Clubs}. He flopped the nut straight.

Rouhani Wins a Big Three-Way Pot To Stay Alive

Farzad Rouhani
Farzad Rouhani
Stud Hi/Lo:

There was a big three-way pot over at one of the tables recently. Both Jim Silveira and Farzad Rouhani were all in. All of the money went in on fifth street and here's how the hands played out.

Silveira: ({5-Spades} {4-Clubs}) {2-Hearts} {3-Spades} {4-Diamonds} {K-Clubs} {9-Spades}
Rouhani: ({A-Hearts} {6-Clubs}) {3-Diamonds} {A-Clubs} {8-Spades} {A-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds}
Opponent: ({J-Spades} {10-Diamonds}) {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs} {J-Diamonds} {10-Spades} {5-Clubs}

Rouhani was able to scoop the entire pot worth almost 90,000 chips with trip aces against his two opponents. Silveira was eliminated on the hand.

Micon Gettin' Mightier

Stud Hi/Lo:

In a hand of stud hi/lo, Bryan Micon scooped a pot with a six-high straight which worked for both halves of the pot. He was able to bust one player on the hand and increase his stack to 80,000.
