164 players bought into the World Championship Seven-Card Stud Hi/Lo event, its buy-in super-sized to $10,000 from last year's $5,000 price tag. As was to be expected, this event drew an elite field with the likes of Doyle Brunson, Barry Greenstein, Chau Giang, Annie Duke, Chris Ferguson, Erick Lindgren, Eli Elezra, Howard Lederer, and defending champion Sebastian Ruthenberg.

Approximately 111 players will return to play Day 2, including Daniel Negreanu, whose cocktail-heavy celebration at the NHL Awards continued here in the Brasilia Room throughout the evening. Making early exits were Carlos Mortensen, Phil Ivey, Justin Bonomo, Jason Mercier, Max Pescatori, Jennifer Harman, Mark Gregorich, Ted Forrest, and Dario Alioto.

Tuan Le finished the evening as the dominant chip leader with 232,000 in his stack at last count. Behind him are Lyle Berman with 112,000 and Jeff Lisandro with 100,000. Also surviving to Day 2 with healthy stacks were Dario Minieri, Howard Lederer, Tom Schneider, David Benyamine, and Daniel Alaei.

Schneider on a Run

Tom Schneider was down to 2,700 chips at his lowest point. Since then, he's stormed back all the way to 70,000. If he's in a hand, there's about a 90% chance he'll be scooping it all up at the end. At least that seems to be the norm on this run.

Five More Hands

The tournament clock has been paused with ten minutes remaining and a card drawn to determine the number of hands each table will play before bagging and tagging. It was a five, ergo five more hands before Day 1 comes to a close.

Tuan Le Up to 237K

And that's no typo!

Much of Le's chip infusion came when he knocked out Marco Traniello in a four-way pot. Le started with buried tens and improved to tens and threes. Traniello was all in on sixth with an open-ended straight draw and a low draw, but bricked out. Neither of Le's other two opponents made a low or could beat his high and he scooped the lot, taking the dominant chip lead.

Chiu Makes Quads

David Chiu just made quad nines against Todd Brunson over at table 249 in the back of the room. The quads were good enough to rake the entire pot in for Chiu after Brunson called seventh with two pair, queens and threes. The pot was worth about 12,000 chips in all - a nice addition to Chiu's stack.

Lauria Gets New Life

Bob Lauria was all in early on in a hand against Scotty Nguyen and one other opponent. By the end of the hand, Scotty had the other opponent all in as well. That player wound up being sent to the rail by Scotty.

Scotty Nguyen drew a seven-six low to take that half of the pot. Lauria made two pair, threes and fours, to take the high half of the pot. He gave a loud, enthused clap when he found out he would be getting half the pot. Lauria is now at 19,000.

After being down to only 2,700 chips early in the tournament, Tom Schneider has rebounded all the way back up to 39,000 after scooping a pot with aces full of queens.

We caught up to the action on the end when Jerry Buss fired a bet into Farzad "Freddie" Bonyadi. Bonyadi tossed in the chips for a call. Buss showed a six-four low and Bonyadi leaned forward to check the cards a little more closely. He then flipped his hand over to reveal a heart flush. The two would chop the pot.
