Blind Defense, and a Little Offense from Varkonyi

2002 Main Event champion Robert Varkonyi is here, sporting a Yankees cap and sunglasses. His wife, Olga, is here playing today as well. Robert has been mostly keeping out of harm's way these first three hours, although when the blinds come around he's sometimes been seen joining into the fray.

The button opened with a raise to 600, and Varkonyi called from the big blind. The flop came {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. Varkonyi checked, his opponent continued for 600, and Varkonyi folded.

Same scenario two orbits later, with the button raising to 600 and Varkonkyi calling from the big blind. This time the flop came {Q-Clubs}{6-Spades}{7-Diamonds}, Varkonyi led for 1,000, and his opponent folded.

The former champ has 32,500 at the moment.

Update From the Feature Tables

There not a lot of action to report from over at the feature tables with Peter Eastgate and Erick Lindgren both progressing well on their respective tables. Both tables are pretty quiet with very little table talk and not a lot of big pots at this stage.

Eastgate has chipped up nicely to 45,000 to get his title defense off to the right start, with Lindgren also in the black with 37,000 chips.

Tricky WSOP Lines

Coming out to the WSOP and making a deep run is going to involve a bunch of things to all work in your favor, but you're also going to need to mix up your play here and there. We just witnessed this tricky line go down over at one of the tables in the red section.

Two players limped in before John Alexander raised to 900. The big blind called and then the first limper folded. The next limper reraised to 4,900 total. Alexander took a moment and then let his hand go. The big blind did the same thing. It's not often you see someone limp behind and then reraise.

The Gods Must Be Crazy

We mortals. If only we knew how very little was under our control.

Over on Table #37 a discussion regarding the "flop god," the "turn god," and the "river god" is proceeding.

Not sure about the identity of the flop god, but it sounds like the turn god is a "hippie chick" who does a lot of teasing. And the "river god" is a spiteful old man sitting on a cloud.

Wong Place, Right Time

A few more chips for Steve Wong as he made it to the turn of a {4-Spades} {4-Hearts} {5-Diamonds} {2-Hearts} board in a four-way pot.

The gentleman in the big blind bet out 500 and Wong was the only caller. An ace on the river and Mr. Big Blind checked to Wong who bet 1,050. A fold later, and the pot was Wong's putting him up to over 13,000.

Dealer Exposes Filth

A minor controversy, as a gentleman tried to flash a single card with the hand completed, only for the dealer to show the table his other one too.

What his his other card being, obviously, complete filth, the floor was called and it was ruled that the dealer had a made a mistake in showing the second card. He apologized, but we are left with one extremely humorless gentleman at that table...

Wong Doubles

We're not sure if Steve Wong was all in before the flop or after, but he was able to earn a much-needed double up to 12,200 just a few moments ago.

Wong held {A-Clubs} {Q-Spades} against his opponent's {9-Hearts} {7-Spades} on a board of {Q-Hearts} {10-Hearts} {6-Spades} {Q-Clubs} {J-Hearts}.
