Brunson Gets Rivered

On a board of {K-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}{6-Hearts}, Todd Brunson check-called his opponent's bet of 2,600. The river brought the {7-Spades} and Brunson check-called another 5,100.

His opponent turned over {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} saying "I rivered a set." He actually had a full house, but the difference didn't mean anything to Brunson who tossed his hand in the muck. He's down to 28,000.

Scott Still Climbing

Kara Scott was all smiles after picking off a bluff in a recent hand. Scott had the button and reraised preflop to 3,000 after a player opened from middle position to 1,025. That player called and check-called another 4,000 on a flop of {2-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs} {A-Diamonds}. When the turn fell {2-Clubs}, Scott's opponent led into her for 6,700. Scott called that bet and then found herself facing a hefty bet of 17,500 on the {6-Diamonds} river. Scott called again.

"Nice hand," her opponent said, mucking his hand. Scott opened {A-Hearts} {3-Hearts} for two pair, aces and deuces, and collected the pot. Her count climbed to 63,000.

Slim Bounces Back

Amarillo Slim Preston
Amarillo Slim Preston
Amarillo Slim Preston and two opponents all got their stacks in the middle before the flop.

Player 1: {K-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}
Player 2: {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}
Preston: {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}

When the board ran {7-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{2-Clubs}, Preston four-flushed the nuts and eliminated both opponents. His stack now stands at 45,000.

Farha Kickers Opponent Out

On a flop of {5-Spades} {A-Clubs} {J-Diamonds}, Sam Farha checked from early position to his late-position opponent. That player bet 2,300, then moved all in for 17,000 total after Farha made a small raise to 5,000 total. Farha called with {A-Hearts} {J-Clubs}, having flopped top two pair. he was ahead of his opponent's one pair, {A-Spades} {Q-Diamonds}. The board ran out {5-Diamonds} and {A-Diamonds} to give Farha a full house and the win. He's up to 74,500.

Baron the Bully

Five players saw a limped flop of {10-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} and action checked around to the turn, which brought the {5-Spades}.

When a player in middle position finally bet 2,100, action folded back to Isaac Baron in the small blind, who check-raised to 7,000. When his opponent folded, Baron added some valuable chips to his stack which now stands at 27,400.

His Heart Will Go On

Rene Angelil moved all in from the big blind for his remaining 15,300 on a flop of {8-Spades} {6-Hearts} {5-Spades} and the button made the call.

Angelil showed {Q-Hearts} {Q-Clubs} for the overpair while the button turned up {8-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds} for top pair and an open-ended straight draw. The turn was the {10-Spades}, but the {9-Clubs} on the river made the button's straight, eliminating Angelil.

Hearn's Misfire Works Out

"Raise," said small blind Catherine Hearn. She moved to put out a raise to 1,200, not realizing that a player in the cutoff had already raised to 1,200. Hearn was momentarily confused until the dealer instructed that because she had declared raise, she was required to put out at least 2,000 chips (a minimum raise). Hearn did just that and the cutoff called.

Both players checked all the way to the river as the board developed {Q-Spades} {7-Spades} {2-Clubs} {2-Hearts} {K-Diamonds}. At the river, Hearn took down the pot with a bet of 3,000.

"Sorry," she said as she collected the chips.

Jack Ury Avoids Disaster

Jack Ury
Jack Ury
Four players saw a flop of {5-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds} {2-Hearts}. At 96 years young, Jack Ury led out from the big blind for 3,000. A player under the gun called and the other two players in the hand got out of the way.

The turn paired the board with the {5-Clubs} and Ury bet again, this time for 5,000. His opponent made the call.

The river brought the {K-Spades} . Ury checked and his opponent moved all in for 11,400, just a few hundred more than Ury had in his stack.

Ury asked for a count from his opponent, several times, until he was finally able to hear the tally.

After a few moments he mucked his hand. The player under the gun flashed pocket aces to which Ury replied "i had a pocket pair too."

Jack Ury - 10,675.

Slim Slips
