Event 6 - $10,000 World Championship Seven Card Stud

Day 2 Completed

That's All For Today

Chipleader Eric Drache
Chipleader Eric Drache
Day 2 dawned some 13 hours ago with 101 runners duking it out seven-card style, and that has now been whittled down into a sparse, skilled field of just 11 players. David Oppenheim came into the day on top of the pack, but it was just a few levels before he was ground down and out of the field. Among the other casualties of Day 2 were notables Chris Ferguson, Mark Seif, Andy Bloch, Phil Ivey, John Juanda, Bruno Fitoussi, Johnny Chan, Todd Brunson, Hoyt Corkins, Steve Zolotow, and Alex Kravchenko.

Despite that who's-who list of bustouts, there's still plenty of talent left in the field. Daniel Negreanu was down under 10,000 chips near the middle of the day before rallying to more than 300,000. He's slipped a bit since then, finishing play just under 200,000. Also still going are Greg "FBT" Mueller, Jeff Lisandro, Max Pescatori, Hasan Habib and Stud stud Eric Drache.

All of those guys were chasing the most-senior member of this event throughout the day, Freddie Ellis. Ellis has been putting on a clinic for two days now, and he worked his way to a massive chip lead over the last few levels. The gap closed significantly as the final levels wore on though, and both Drache and Habib managed to creep ahead of Ellis as play concluded.

We couldn't quite reach the final table before the 3:00am cutoff, so we'll be back at 1:00pm to pick up the action (thank you, Rule 96). We'll see you tomorrow afternoon!

Dehkharghani Elimina... No Wait

Ray "Copy and Paste" Dehkharghani looked to be all but dead. He completed third street, then called Ivan Schertzer's raise. He check-called fourth street, checked fifth street and then led out on sixth. Schertzer came the whole way. Down the river, the boards were:

Dehkharghani: (X-X)/ {J-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} {8-Spades} {K-Clubs} / (X)
Schertzer: (X-X) / {2-Hearts} {7-Hearts} {3-Spades} {4-Spades} / (X)

Dehkharghani fired one last bet that Schertzer called with {Q-Spades} {Q-Diamonds} {7-Spades} in the hole, two pair, queens and sevens. Dehkharghani showed down just a pair of jacks with {A-Clubs} {J-Hearts} {3-Clubs}.

When the chips were counted down, Dehkharghani had just 3,000 left. He seemed all but eliminated. But he won the next hand... and the next hand... and then another hand after that to climb all the way back up to 150,000.

Mueller?... Mueller?...

Greg Mueller completed with his {3-Diamonds} up, and Daniel Negreanu came along showing the {K-Spades}.

Mueller: (X-X) / {3-Diamonds} {9-Spades} {10-Clubs} {6-Hearts} / (X)
Negreanu: (X-X) / {K-Spades} {6-Diamonds} {6-Spades} {A-Clubs} / (X)

Negreanu check-called a bet on fourth street, then led out on the final three streets, with Mueller calling the whole way. When the hand was done, Negreanu turned over {A-Hearts} {J-Hearts} {7-Diamonds} for aces up. Mueller flashed {Q-Hearts} {Q-Clubs} before sending his cards back to the dealer face-down.

Negreanu has chipped back up a bit to 215,000.

Slooooooooow Down

With 11 players remaining and the hour late, play has slowed down considerably. We're unlikely to wrap this thing up by 3am (even though we can hope for it). In that case, Rule 96 will kick in and we'll all go home until tomorrow.
