Shuffle Up and Double Up

The cards are in the air and Robert Williamson doubles up on the first hand of the day. Williamson opens the pot from the cutoff by announcing all in. Anthony Licastro makes the call from the small blind and the two players are heads up.

Showdown:
Williamson: {5-Hearts}{6-Hearts}
Licastro: {A-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}

"I had nice suited connectors in an unopened pot. I couldn't help it," said Williamson. The board came {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{j-Hearts}, pairing Williamson's 5 and doubling him to around 23,000. Licastro still has a sizable stack of 78,000 in front of him.

"God I hope I double up again on my second hand," said Williamson. "Would that be greedy?" His opponents nodded. Yes Robert, it would be greedy.

Fireworks on Red 362 Already

It didn't take long for Red 362 to get going. Anthony Licastro and Jordan Morgan got all of the chips into the middle. Morgan tabled {a-Hearts} {a-Clubs}, which held up on a board of {3-Clubs} {2-Clubs} {j-Hearts} {7-Hearts} {4-Spades} to give Morgan the double-up to start the day. Licastro was a Top 10 stack when play started, but after that hand he's been knocked down to about 70,000 while Morgan is up to about 100,000.

In a separate hand, Ted Lawson became one of the first players eliminated today.

Interesting Tables

Two tables in the center of the room have caught our attention. At Red 362 are Jordan Morgan, Ted Lawson and Robert Williamson III. At the very next table, Red 363, Avery Cardoza, Eric Buchman and John-Paul Kelly all find themselves seated together.

Six Seats at the Table Means Lots of Action

The chip bags are out on the tables in the Red Section of the Amazon Room today as WSOP staff prepare for Day 2 of Event #16: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em / Six-Handed.

Last year 1,459 players entered this event. In 2010 there was a 15% uptick, as 1,663 paid the $1,500 buy-in yesterday to play the aggressive brand of poker that's required in a six-handed format. It didn't surprise anyone that the money bubble was burst before Day 1 ended. These six-handed tournaments tend to play much faster than their full-ring counterparts.

When we left off at about 1am local time last night, 146 players remained. They were led by Roger Teska with 221,000, nearly 70,000 more chips than his closest opponent. With blinds starting the day at 600 and 1,200, that's a significant advantage.

It's tough to predict these things in a six-handed tournament, but we probably won't reach the final table of six players tonight. Our best guess is that 10-12 players will remain when the chip bags come out again at 2:30am.

Whether we reach the final table or not, PokerNews will be there all the way. Stay tuned.
