A Little More Play

Tournament Director Steve Frezer has just decreed that we'll play down to the money tonight even if it means leaking into the next level (or two). We're currently six eliminations away from reaching that goal, and we've only lost a handful of players over the last two levels.

Update: The other Tournament Director (Kurt) and Frezer just had a little pow-wow in the corner. It appears that we're going to play this level out and see where we stand before any clear-cut decisions are made. We'll let you know what the story is as soon as we know, but we may well end up stopping for the night anyways, as we've only lost one player so far in this level.

Melissa Hayden Takes a Hit

When we arrived at the table the board was reading {2-Spades}{5-Spades}{9-Clubs}{9-Spades}. The player in the big blind put out a 4,500-chip bet and Hayden called.

River: {2-Hearts} Hayden called a 8,000-chip bet from the opponent and saw a pair of eights in the other side of the table.

Hayden mucked her hand and slipped to 70,000 chip.

Last One

Level 10 has begun, our final level of the evening. We'll play on for one more hour before bagging and tagging the chips for the overnight soak. By that time, we should be dangerously close to the money bubble, though the pace of play has slowed dramatically over the course of the last level or so.

Harder Can't Fade the Overpair

We picked up the action on the flop as the dealer ran out the first three cards {5-Hearts} {7-Hearts} {3-Hearts}. Action was on Christian Harder in the small blind, and he put out a bet of 2,800. His opponent made a raise to 12,400, and that sent Harder into the tank for a couple minutes. Eventually, he re-raised the pot, and his opponent called all in for his last ~27,000 total chips.

Showdown:
Harder: {3-Clubs} {7-Clubs}
Opponent: {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs}

Harder had the pot in his grasp, but it would soon slip away. The dealer pulled the {5-Clubs} off on fourth street, counterfeiting Harder and improving his opponent to queens up. The {6-Diamonds} locked up the pot for the other player, dropping Harder down to 29,000.

Gotlieb Freerolls for $200

Joe Gotlieb limped into the pot under the gun, and Jason Potter raised to 3,600 from the button. Gotlieb called, and the two men went to a heads-up flop of {9-Clubs} {5-Clubs} {5-Hearts}. After a Gotlieb check, Potter's follow-up bet of 4,200 quickly found a call.

Gotlieb checked in the dark as the dealer burned and turned the {4-Diamonds}. Potter put another 5,600 chips into the pot, and his opponent came right along with the call once again.

The {K-Hearts} filled out the board, and Gotlieb received it with an all-in shove for about 25,000. Potter was completely taken aback. "You flopped quads. You totally flopped quads!" he said across the table. It was another minute or three before Potter mustered the gumption to fold what he would later say was pocket jacks.

"Two hundred dollars to show me less than a five," Potter said as the dealer was pushing the pot. "Two hundred dollar freeroll."

Gotlieb looked absolutely shocked and he asked Potter to show him the money. As Potter reached for his roll, Gotlieb flipped up his {K-Clubs} {Q-Clubs}, and he looked like a kid on Christmas morning as he was handed two crisp Benjamins. He was still beaming as the floor tapped him on the shoulder to move him for a table rebalance immediately following the hand.

McEvoy Doubles Trough Liu

JJ Liu
JJ Liu

With a flop reading {8-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{2-Hearts} JJ Liu bet out 4,300 chips and Tom McEvoy went all in on the button for about more 3,100 chips. Liu called.

Showdown:
Liu: {4-Spades}{4-Diamonds}
McEvoy: {q-Clubs}{j-Clubs}

Turn: {7-Clubs}

River: {q-Spades}

Par of queens for McEvoy who is now up to 20,000 chips. Liu slipped to 56,000.

Top-Top Sends Froehlich Out

Eric Froehlich
Eric Froehlich

In middle position, Jim Lewis raised to 3,500, and Eric Froehlich three-bet to 12,000 from the button. Lewis made the call, and the two men saw a flop of {A-Clubs} {2-Clubs} {5-Clubs}. Lewis quickly announced a pot-sized bet of 25,500, and Froehlich made the call, putting himself all in in the process. The news was not good:

Lewis: {A-Hearts} {K-Hearts}
Froehlich: {A-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds}

The turn was the {6-Spades}, and the river {3-Diamonds} completed the board. Unable to find any help for his inferior kicker, Froehlich has been eliminated from the tournament.
