"I Don't Even Know What an Umlaut is"

[user198205] • Level 1: 25-25, 0 ante

There is sure to be a lot of interesting conversation at table #6 over in the black section. Gavin Smith and Phil Laak are seated next to each other and we already caught a bit of banter from them.

Smith was trying to argue that because Laak's name has two a's in it, that it should be pronounced "lack." He said jokingly, "You've been pronouncing your name wrong your whole life!" Laak then made some comment about an umlaut and Smith replied "I don't even know what an umlaut is!"

We're sure the humorous quips will continue at that table throughout the day.

Rheem Scores an Early Double Up

tayke2 • Level 1: 25-25, 0 ante

Chino Rheem raised in the cutoff to 100. The button folded, and the small blind raised to 350. It came back around to Rheem, who wasted little time with putting the rest of his chips in, 2,400 in total. The small blind tanked for a bit before throwing the chips in for a call.

Rheem: {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Small Blind: {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}

The two players were off to the races, but Rheem looked to be in big trouble as the board had run out {7-Clubs}{3-Spades}{8-Spades}{4-Clubs}. However, Rheem spiked the {q-Diamonds} on the turn to make a winning pair of queens. Rheem said "whoops" and cracked a brief smile while collecting the chips to get his stack back up to around 5,000.

Boeree Binks a Small Pot

[user198205] • Level 1: 25-25, 0 ante

We caught the action on the flop with the board showing the {a-Spades}{10-Spades}{6-Hearts}. The player in the big blind checked to Liv Boeree who bet 725. He called and the turn brought the {q-Hearts}. Both players opted to check and they saw the {2-Clubs} come on the river. The big blind checked his option again and Boeree fired out a bet of 2,000, most of her remaining stack. The other player quickly folded and Boeree's stack grew to around 5,600.

Time for a Shootout!

tayke2

Welcome back to the Rio! Today we have one of the most exciting events of the year, Event #13: $1500 No-Limit Holdem Shootout.

Last year, Steven Kelly outlasted a whopping field of 1397 players to take home the first prize and a total of $381,922. Annette Obrestad and JC Tran both made it to the final day last year, but fell just short of the final table.

For those that are unfamiliar with how a shootout works, its essentially a tournament of sit n gos. Today there will be 10 players at each table, and the goal is to win your table and move on to tomorrow. If you do that, you will already be in the money! It should be an action packed day, so be sure to stay tuned with Pokernews for up to the minute coverage all day!
