The Great Dane Drags a Huge Pot

Level 6 : 2,000/4,000, 0 ante
Gus
Gus

We caught the action on the turn, with a board reading {A-Spades}{6-Hearts}{K-Spades}{8-Diamonds} and a pot of nearly 40,000 chips up for grabs. Gus Hansen fired 28,000 and Alaei studied his man before making the call. The river card was the {2-Clubs} and Hansen began slowly playing with his chips, repeatedly counting and shuffling a stack of twenty 5,000 chips. Eventually he decided on a bet of 95,000 and Alaei reacted by standing briefly before making the call. In his inimitable style, Hansen smiled sheepishly and asked "Ace good?" before turning over the {A-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} and scooping the nearly 300,000 chip pot.

Sarah Grant talked to Gus Hansen about his hand, as well as his match-up with Jason Mercier.

Tom Dwan Defeats Ashton Griffin

Level 5 : 1,500/3,000, 0 ante

Ashton Griffin was on the button and opened with a min-raise and Tom Dwan reraised. Griffin three-bet shoved and Dwan called. Griffin tabled pocket fives and Dwan showed pocket aces. The board ran blank and Dwan moved on the next round.

Mortensen's Ducks Drowned By Duthie's Straight

John Duthie First to Advance
John Duthie First to Advance

Carlos Mortensen led out preflop with a small bet and was raised by John Duthie. The man they call "The Matador" opted to commit the rest of his stack and pushed all-in. Duthie insta-called and showed {Q-}{Q-}, putting him far ahead of Mortensen's {2-}{2-}. A final board of {8-}{9-}{10-}{J-}{4-} gave Duthie a winning straight and made him the first competitor to advance to the Round of 16. Duthie is also the first player to make the money in this event, earning a payout of at least $67,436.

Breaks? What Breaks?

Level 5 : 1,500/3,000, 0 ante

The players at one table, including Issac Haxton, Jonathan Jaffe, Jake Cody and Dani Stern collectively called the floor to inquire about the next break. When the floorman informed the group that there would be no breaks until 3rd round matches are completed, the table voiced their disapproval, stating "we had breaks yesterday and those matches were shorter." We will keep you updated on any developments concerning the break situation.

Guetti Pulls Even with Benyamine

Level 5 : 1,500/3,000, 0 ante

After bolting out to a blistering start, David Benyamine's rush has apparently ended and at last count, Anthony Guetti appears to have built his stack to nearly 300,000 chips. Benyamine has yet to employ any of his 100k add-ons, so for all intents and purposes, this match is now dead even.

Lykov Takes Another Hit

Level 4 : 1,200/2,400, 0 ante

We found this hand with Maxim Lykov in deep thought facing a large raise on the river from Matt Marafioti. The board {K-Clubs} {6-Clubs} {K-Hearts} {2-Diamonds} {A-Hearts}. Lykov had bet 16,000 and Marafiote made it 50,500. Lykov slid out the call and then insta-mucked when Marafioti tabled {A-Clubs} {A-Spades}. Lykov is down below 100,000.

Moorman Felted, Cashes in First Add-On

Level 3 : 1,000/2,000, 0 ante

We caught up with the action as the board read {7-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{A-Spades} and over 100,000 chips in the pot. Moorman had made a bet and was raised 21,500 more by Richard Lyndaker, which would force Moorman to go all-in. He thought it over for a minute or so before folding, leaving himself with only 20,000 remaining. On the next deal, Moorman open-shoved with the {J-Hearts}{2-Hearts} and was called by Lyndaker, who held {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}. The final board read {Q-Spades}{5-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{J-Spades}{5-Hearts} and Lyndaker's pair of Queens was good. Moorman flipped the dealer one of his 100,000 add-on lammers and returned to battle.
