Caridad Doubles with a Six-Card Royal

On a board of {10-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{A-Clubs}, the blinds both checked to John Caridad, who bet 4,200. The small blind then woke up with a check-raise to 8,400, the big blind folded, and Caridad called off for 7,825 total.

Caridad: {K-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{8-Spades}
Opponent: {A-Spades}{K-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}

Caridad was in trouble, but the {9-Clubs} river delivered him salvation. He hit the nut flush to take down the pot and double to nearly 20K. "It's a six-card royal," another player pointed out.

Break it Up

Level 6 : 200/400, 0 ante

We've reduced this field by more than 100. The big board shows that less than 243 players have survived these first six levels. We've got two more levels to play, but we're on our last 15-minute break first.

Level: 7

Blinds: 250/500

Ante: 0

Oops!

Level 7 : 250/500, 0 ante

We're back in action following what was not the last break of the night. We'll play two more levels, but they'll be interrupted by a color-up break in between.

Chiu-Chiu Train Derailed

David Chiu
David Chiu

With around 17,000 in the pot and a board reading {K-Spades}{J-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{6-Hearts}, David Chiu checked and allowed John Caridad to bet pot. Chiu, who only had a stack of 13,400, tanked for a minute, toying with his chips. Eventually he wrapped both hands around his pile and pushed it forward.

Caridad: {A-Hearts}{10-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}
Chiu: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{5-Spades}

Caridad had flopped Broadway and was out in front; however, Chiu could still take the pot if the board paired on the river. As the dealer burned, Chiu rose from his chair and prepared to meet his fate . . . the {10-Diamonds}. Chiu was eliminated from the tournament while Caridad chipped up to about 47,000.

Oops Again!

Level 7 : 250/500, 0 ante

The floor staff just told us that they're going to forgo the color-up at the end of this level and wait until the chip bags come out to do it. So we were right! No more breaks tonight! Ha!

Laak & Sands Lose a Little

Phil Laak limped under the gun and action folded all the way to the blinds, including David "Doc" Sands in the big. They both came along and it was three-handed to the {10-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{A-Hearts} flop. Action checked to Laak and he bet 525, which was called by both his opponents. All three players then checked the {J-Spades} turn, which was followed by the {6-Clubs} on the river.

The small blind led out for 2,000, which inspired both Laak and Sands to fold.
