Ryan D'Angelo Welcomes Toby Lewis to Table #5

Ryan D'Angelo is having a fantastic first 6-levels
Ryan D'Angelo is having a fantastic first 6-levels

Toby Lewis may look like a quiet public schoolboy (it's the hair Lewis) but the lad can play poker. Not only is he one of the best online players in the world (where he plays under the moniker 810ofclubs) but he has also won over $1.4 million on the live circuit including a European Poker Tour (EPT) title. Add some seriously good backing scores, this year, and Lewis is in fine fettle. He has just moved to Table #5 in the Gold Section and Ryan D'Angelo has just sent him a gentle nudge to let him know that it is he who is king of that table.

We joined the action on a flop of {5-Hearts} {2-Spades} {2-Diamonds} in a three-bet pot with Lewis holding position on D'Angelo. The first flop bet went the way of Lewis and it was for 1,850; D'Angelo check-calling. The turn {J-Spades} was checked through before D'Angelo fired 2,400 at the {5-Clubs} river. Lewis spun the ring on his right ring finger, thought for a moment and then mucked.

A Tale of Two Tables

Dennis Phillips
Dennis Phillips

The board read {4-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{8-Spades}{2-Spades} and Dennis Phillips was first to act, he opted to check. Phillip's opponent bet out 1,500 and after a few moments Phillips made the call.

The {3-Diamonds} on the river found Phillips checking again and his opponent betting, this time 2,100. Phillips then went deep into the tank, contemplating his best options. After about two minutes had passed Phillips made the call and was shown {A-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} by his opponent for a pair of aces with a ten kicker. Phillips flipped over the {A-Hearts} and mucked his cards.

The next table over also had a pot growing. The flop read {8-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{k-Clubs} and James Akkenhead opted to bet 1,475 after his opponent in early position had checked to him. A call was made and we were off to the turn.

The {2-Clubs} on the turn saw checks from both players.

The {k-Diamonds} on the river seemingly awoke the early position player who fired out 4,475. Akkenhead measured out the right amount of chips fairly quickly and placed the call in the middle of the felt. Akkenhead's opponent flipped over {A-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for ace high, and Akkenhead mucked his hole cards.

Silver Section: Gulyy Still Leads; Aguiar & Brammer Bust

Andrey Gulyy is still leading the Silver Section
Andrey Gulyy is still leading the Silver Section

With 801 players left from our starting field of 1,607, here is an update from the Silver Section of the Brasilia Room.

The Welsh wizard Roberto Romanello has moved into Table #21 and has 11,600 chips. Romanello came very close to achieving the Triple Crown (European Poker Tour, World Poker Tour and World Series of Poker titles) when he finished in 7th place in Event #36: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout. Romanello looks focussed, serious and his A game look about him.

Last time we trounced around the Silver Section, Andrey Gulyy was the chip leader. He still holds that title despite losing a decent size pot to Justin Young. But Gulyy has some smart company now that Chris Moorman has moved to his table. Moorman sits on 26,000 whilst Gulyy sits on 45,500.

Those Internet whizz kids, we wrote about, are dropping like flies. Gabriel Nassif and Kyle Weir bit the dust early and we have also lost Jack Ellwood and Chris Brammer. Brammer just moved all-in on a board of {10-Clubs} {A-Diamonds} {7-Hearts} {3-Diamonds} {Q-Spades}, and after the clock was called, Kharim Lehoussine made the call and it was good. Lehoussine tabling {A-Spades} {10-Hearts} to beat the bluff from Brammer holding {10-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds}. Lehoussine moved up to 41,000 with victory in that hand.

Another casualty in the Silver Section is Jon Aguiar. Hiren 'Sunny' Patel took the large majority of Aguiar's chips just prior to his elimination. Patel raised to 450, Aguiar three-bet to 1,175, Patel four-bet to 2,650 and Aguiar called. The flop was {6-} {5-} {4-} (rainbow), Patel bet 1,625 and Aguiar made the call. The turn was the {K-Clubs} (putting two clubs on board), Patel checked, Aguiar moved all-in for around 10,000 and Patel called.

Patel{J-} {J-}
Aguiar{9-Clubs} {8-Clubs}

So Patel was ahead, the draws didn't materialise and that loss put Aguiar on 1,500 chips. They went into the middle holding {K-} {9-} (suited) and ran into {5-} {5-} resulting in his elimination.

Anyone Seen Phil Ivey?

Level 6 : 150/300, 25 ante

There is a rumor that the Phil Ivey is multi-tabling again. We know he is in the $50,000 Players Championship, but we believe he has been spotted playing a few hands in this event during his break. We will keep our eyes peeled.

Lew Moving Up, Coren and Steinberg Moving Out

Event 33: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em winner Max Steinberg is no longer in his seat, so we have to assume he has been eliminated. Victoria Coren joins him on the rail as her seat was empty as well.

We found ourselves at Randy Lew's table with a flop reading {4-Spades}{Q-Spades}{4-Diamonds}. Lew's opponent bet out 1,600 and Lew raised it to 2,700. Lew's opponent took his time, draining the clock of a minute or so before making a raise of about 5,000. The short stacked Lew quickly threw in his remaining 4,500 and cards were tabled.

Lew: {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}
Opponent: {A-Spades}{2-Diamonds}

Only an ace would send Lew home. The {10-Hearts} on the river further secured the hand in Lew's favor, and the {2-Diamonds} on the river guaranteed it.

WSOP Bracelet Holders: Williams, Dempsey and Frankenberger Are Out

David Williams leaves us
David Williams leaves us

The Gold Section of the Brasilia room has just lost three very talented players, who each have World Series of Poker (WSOP) gold on their resume's.

James Dempsey has won over $1.9 million in live tournament earnings that includes a WSOP bracelet and World Poker Tour (WPT) title. But none of that means anything if you get it in with a flopped set of fives versus pocket queens, only to see a queen hit the turn.

Moving up the pay scale and we have Andy Frankenberger. The former Derivatives Trader has only been in poker a short while, but that hasn't stopped him amassing a personal fortune of $2,529,472 in live tournament winnings. Cluttered amongst all that money are two WSOP bracelets and a WPT title. Frankenberger got all of his chips into the middle in a 70BB pot against Kyle Bowker {A-} {Q-} (suited) versus {A-} {8-} (suited) and Bowker came out on top.

Next you have David Williams. Williams has earned over $8,329,268 including a WSOP bracelet and WPT title spanning an 8-year career that sparked when he finished as the runner up to Greg Raymer in the 2004 WSOP Main Event. Williams raised with {A-} {J-} from the cutoff, the small blind shipped with {A-} {Q-} and Williams called. A jack appeared on the flop and for a moment it looked the suckout was on, until the queen found its way to the board on the river to even up the score.

So Dempsey, Frankenberger and Williams are all out, and they are joined by Pratyush Buddiga and Heinz Kamutzki.

The top dog in the backyard called the Gold section is still Ryan D'Angelo with 45,000 chips.
