O'Brien Can't Bluff It

Level 6 : 150/300, 25 ante

On the final board of {8-Hearts}{7-Spades}{4-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{K-Clubs}, Dan O'Brien was last to act in a group of four players. The first player checked, the next player fired a bet of 2,100, the third player called, and then O'Brien raised to 8,500. The first player folded, and the original bettor followed suit, but the third player made the call.

O'Brien turned up the {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} for just queen high, and his opponent showed the {K-Spades}{Q-Spades} for two pair, kings and fours. O'Brien's hand was mucked, and he dropped back to 37,000 in chips.

Phil Galfond Drops an Early Pot

Level 6 : 150/300, 25 ante

We saw Phil Galfond open for 550 from the button, and call a reraise to 1,025 by an opponent in the small blind.

When the flop of {4-Spades}{a-Hearts}{7-Clubs} hit the board, the player led out with a bet of 800, which Galfond called. On the {5-Hearts} turn, Galfond again flatted his opponent's bet, this time for 2,250, and the {8-Clubs} completed the board on the river.

Both players opted to check, and Galfond's hand went into the muck when he saw the {A-Spades}{10-Diamonds} tabled.

Plenty of Extras Being Given Away At This Year's WSOP

Level 6 : 150/300, 25 ante

The buzz inside the walls of the Rio extends beyond just the tournaments on the 2013 World Series of Poker schedule. Online poker in Nevada is a very, very hot topic right now, and WSOP.com is making a lot of noise.

While the site has yet to launch, you can head to the Lambada Room of the Rio or look for one of the beautiful and friendly WSOP.com ladies walking the hallways to sign up for a free, personal WSOP.com online poker account. This is a great way to get a jump on the site's registration, and plenty of people have already taken this opportunity.

What's more is that the WSOP will be hosting daily raffles for everyone that has taken the time to register for WSOP.com at the Rio. What can you win? Plenty of fantastic prizes including 36 WSOP seats!

Players 21 years of age and older who sign up for a WSOP.com account will automatically be entered into the “36-Seat Giveaway” where a randomly-selected winner will win a seat into the next day’s first WSOP gold bracelet event. One of the events eligible in this promotion is the $111,111 One Drop High Roller No-Limit Hold’em tournament that is expected to feature a $10,000,000 prize pool and allow you to play poker with the biggest names in the game. In total, $182,333 in WSOP seats, including a seat to the WSOP Main Event, are being given away during this one-of-a-kind WSOP.com promotion.

In addition to the 36-Seat Giveaway, a “Hot Seat” promotion will allow any player who signs up for a WSOP.com online account and wears their WSOP.com patch on their chest at the table while playing an event to be randomly selected to receive 500 bonus dollars deposited directly into their WSOP.com online account once the site has received all regulatory approvals and launches.

With 62 WSOP gold bracelet events and three winners promised for the Main Event, this promotion includes $32,000 worth of value to those participating.

Vrabel Takes One Off Juanda

Level 6 : 150/300, 25 ante

John Juanda raised to 650 from the hijack seat, and Luke Vrabel called on the button. Everyone else folded, and the flop came down {8-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}. Juanda bet 1,100, and Vrabel made the call.

On the {7-Hearts} turn and {4-Clubs} river, both players checked. Juanda couldn't beat the {3-Spades}{3-Hearts} that Vrabel showed and mucked his hand. Vrabel moved to 30,000 in chips.

Hellmuth Handles an Early Loss With Class

Level 6 : 150/300, 25 ante
Phil Hellmuth (Seen Here in Earlier WSOP Play) Dropped an Early Pot After His Late Arrival
Phil Hellmuth (Seen Here in Earlier WSOP Play) Dropped an Early Pot After His Late Arrival

After his customary late arrival Phil Hellmuth immediately got in on the action, but after losing the last hand, he may miss the opportunities to pad his stack provided by those earlier levels.

We saw Hellmuth splash a handful of chips into the pot while showing down the {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}, which must have looked pretty good on the {6-Spades}{4-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{k-Spades}{a-Clubs} board.

His opponent tabled the {3-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for a rivered flush, and despite momentarily clenching as if to stand and shout, Hellmuth calmly slid his cards into the muck and refocused on his iPad.

NBA > WSOP

Level 6 : 150/300, 25 ante

Every year at the World Series of Poker, the NBA Finals take place as well. To cater to the players (many of whom are large sports bettors), the WSOP often litters each tournament area with television screens displaying the games. Needless to say, the players love this, but they also have a bit harder time playing poker during the games. With the players so fixated on the TV screens around the room, sweating each and every point, foul and fast break, it's now that time in the tournament when things slow down a bit. Heck, if we're caught standing in the line of sight of one of the TVs, we're likely to get an empty water bottle hurled at us.

The moral of the story is this: If things slow down a bit on the felt, don't blame us, blame the NBA.

Vanessa Selbst Goes Racing

Vanessa Selbst Has Doubled Her Starting Stack Here on Day 1
Vanessa Selbst Has Doubled Her Starting Stack Here on Day 1

Vanessa Selbst has raised before the flop, and her opponent pushed back with an all-in wager for roughly 8,000.

Selbst quickly called and rolled over {3-Hearts}{3-Spades}, but by the look on her face it appeared she feared the worst. Her opponent tabled the {K-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}, however, and Selbst was racing to add a decent chunk to her stack.

"I got this," said the all-in player, even as the flop came {2-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{9-Spades}. "I still got this..."

The turn brought the {9-Hearts}, and the player's voice rose a bit, as he pondered the board pair possibilities that might have given him the win, saying "I got this now..."

River: {5-Diamonds}

Selbst had it instead, and by winning this early race, she has more than doubled her stack midway through the first day of play.
