Event #41: $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha (Six Handed)

Day 1 Started

Action Awaits, Day 1 Set to Begin for Event 41: $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha (Six-Handed)

As if things weren't already busy around at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino where five other WSOP events are currently playing out, we have one more to bring you today as part of our wall-to-wall coverage here at PokerNews. Event #41: $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha (Six-Handed) is due to start about an hour from now, an event sure to attract many of poker's elite players and action seekers.

Anticipation is high for this one, especially coming off last night's victory by Jeff Madsen in Event #35: $3,000 Pot-Limit Omaha, a tournament that saw many top PLO players take part including eventual fifth-place finisher Scott Clements.

A year ago it was online star Naoya "nkeyno" Kihara of proving himself on the live felt by winning the bracelet in this event. Kihara topped a field of 419 to win the $512,029 first prize and the first ever bracelet for Japan.

Cards go in the air at 5 p.m. local time, with the Day 1 plan calling for eight one-hour levels. Join us then to follow the coverage and see who comes out for this one with hopes of winning the next 2013 WSOP bracelet.

Meanwhile, here's Lynn Gilmartin with the June 22nd update:

The cards are in the air for Event #41: $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha (Six Handed), but before we get to the coverage, we have to explain some of the rules. This is a triple chance event, meaning that each player receives a 5,000-chip stack plus two add-on chips. Players can cash in their lammers whenever they choose to.

When we report a chip count, we will include the lammers in the number. If the chip count is included in a post, we will let you know if the player has used their lammers or not.

Kick-Start for Kitai

Level 1 : 25/50, 0 ante

As we just mentioned, players are starting with 5,000 chips in play plus two lammers (each worth 5,000) behind. On one of the first hands of the day Davidi Kitai just found himself committing all of his initial stack on the turn versus one opponent, and managing to survive with a healthy boost to start the day.

We arrived with the board showing {10-Spades}{5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} and Kitai turning over {A-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{9-Spades}{5-Spades} for two pair. His opponent had {J-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{2-Hearts} for a heart flush draw, and after the {2-Diamonds} fell on fifth street Kitai scooped the pot.

When play began there were but two or three players at most tables, but by now many of those in our Orange section of the Amazon room have players occupying all six seats in this short-handed event.

To Be Frank

Level 1 : 25/50, 0 ante

"I'm glad I got here on time today!" said Kassela with a wide grin just now as we were passing by his table.

You'd think Frank Kassela was having a good start today. We've seen him win multiple hands, turning a straight in one, flopping full houses in two, and getting paid in each instance.

Truth be told, however, Kassela was being slightly sarcastic with his comment. If he were to speak more frankly, he'd probably say he would have been better off arriving late.

That's because the hands Kassela has been winning have been for very little, as he began the day losing a few hands to run through his first two 5,000 stacks and nearly all of his third.

He's doubled up a few times and still has his seat for now, but he won't should he lose one more all-in.

It’s All Yours!

Daniel Negreanu (during the $5,000 Limit Holdem event
Daniel Negreanu (during the $5,000 Limit Holdem event

We arrived at the at table with the flop showing {Q-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}. The player in the small blind bet 525, and was called by the player under the gun, before Daniel Negreanu moved all in for 2,425 in chips (still with two lammers behind). The small blind committed a few more and the under the gun player called, having chips behind.

Negreanu: {Q-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}
Small Blind: {J-Clubs}{J-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}
UTG: {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}

The board ran out the {2-Hearts} and {3-Clubs} to see Negreanu hold with his straight. The dealer then went to push the pots to their respective winners.

"Ok, so you get the side with the aces, and then we split the main," said Negreanu, confusing the hands he was seeing. The player with aces looked at the board, before correcting Negreanu.

"You have the straight Daniel, not him," he said.

"Oh, I thought you had the straight too," added Negreanu, as he scooped in the pot.

Negreanu moves up to 17,275.
