Gipson Beats the Odds to Double Through Makarov

Level 9

No-Limit Hold'em

Alexey Makarov opened for 4,700 from middle position only to have Keith Gipson, who was seated to his direct left in the hijack, three-bet to 15,000. Action folded back around to Makarov and he opted to four-bet to 30,000. Gipson immediately moved all in for 97,500 and Makarov snap-called.

Makarov: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Gipson: {j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}

It was a bad spot for Gipson as he had run his big pair into an even bigger pair. According to the PokerNews Odds Calculator, Makarov was an 81.31% favorite to win the hand while Gipson had just an 18.25% chance of coming from behind. Wouldn't you know it, the {2-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{10-Hearts} flop gave Gipson a set and made him an 88.18% favorite.

Makarov, who saw his chances of winning drop to 11.82%, was clearly upset and stood from his seat. He then watched the {3-Diamonds} turn drop his chances to 4.55% and the {5-Clubs} river flatline it to zero. With that, Gipson was pushed the nearly 200,000 pot.

Kravchenko Puts Sexton Out of his Misery

Level 9

Stud-8

We noticed Poker Hall of Famer Mike Sexton wasn't in his seat, and a quick check with Mike Leah confirmed he had busted. According to him, Sexton got his last 13,000 or so in the pot straight away holding {a-}{4-}{4-} and was up against Alex Kravchenko, who started with {a-}{2-}{2-}. Kravchenko ended up making jacks and deuces, which was enough to eliminate the unimproved Sexton.

Likewise, Argentina's Nacho Barbero has been sent to the rail.

No Third Poker Players' Championship This Year for Mizrachi

Level 9
Michael Mizrachi
Michael Mizrachi

No-Limit Hold'em

We just came on a big hand involving 2010 and 2012 $50K Poker Players' Champion Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi and Cole South.

Fifth street had been dealt, and with about 60,000 in the middle the board read {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{A-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{7-Clubs}. It appeared South had checked and Mizrachi had fired a bet, as the latter had 35,000 sitting out in front of him with only about 25,000 left behind.

South paused for several seconds, then announced he was all in, his stack well exceeding that of Mizrachi. The Grinder sat up and leaned forward, beginning a couple of minutes' worth of consideration of what to do next.

"I got a pretty big hand," he said at one point, with South offering no response. Finally Mizrachi called, asking "full house?" as he did.

South let his cards provide the response. He didn't have a full house, but his {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs} meant he'd made a club flush. Mizrachi slumped a little as he saw a hand that beat the one he was holding. He started to muck face down, then flipped his cards over and ahead where they landed in the middle of the table — {K-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}.

Mizrachi got up, wished everyone luck, and departed.

"A 100,000 Pot Over Here"

Level 9

Stud-8

Andrey Zaichenko: {x-}{x-} / {10-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{2-Clubs} / {x-}
Matthew Ashton: {x-}{x-} / {6-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} / {x-}
Ofir Mor: {x-}{x-} / {5-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} / {x-}

"A 100,000 pot over here," Allen Kessler informed us. Sure enough, we made our way over just in time to catch the action on seventh. It was at that point that Ofir Mor and Andrey Zaichenko both checked to Matthew Ashton, who bet. Mor made the call, Zaichenko folded and Ashton rolled over the {2-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} for trip deuces.

Mor simply shook his head, gathered up his cards and then sent them to the muck.

Bach Rockin'

Level 9

Limit Hold'em

Yuval Bronshtein raised from middle position and David Bach called from the big blind. The flop came {9-Clubs}{A-Spades}{5-Clubs}. Bach checked, Bronshtein bet, Bach check-raised, and Bach called. The turn then brought the {10-Hearts}. Bach bet this time, and Bronshtein responded with a raise, which Bach called.

The river was the {7-Spades}. Bach checked, Bronshtein bet, and Bach called. "Seven," said Bronshtein without turning over his cards, at which Bach tabled his {A-Clubs}{J-Clubs} for aces. With his headphones on and head nodding to the music, the 2009 $50K H.O.R.S.E. winner gathered the chips to add to his stack.

Time for the 60-Minute Dinner Break

Level 8

Level 8, which was the third level of the day, has come to an end. It's now time for the one-hour dinner break. In case you missed it, here are some of the highlights from the last level of play:

Full House for Friedman

Level 8

No-Limit Hold'em

The last hand before dinner saw Adam Friedman and Scott Clements lingering to finish a hand of no-limit hold'em, with the board showing {J-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{7-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{8-Spades}, about 15,000 sitting in the middle, and Friedman having made a bet of a little less than 12,000.

Clements thought about the situation for a while as players exited from the nearby tables, then finally called. Friedman tabled {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for a runner-runner full house, and Clements showed that his {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} had been outdrawn before departing.

That hand nudges Friedman up over 400,000.
