Welcome back to our ongoing coverage of the 2014 World Series of Poker! Today marks the start of one of the higher buy in no-limit hold’em events with Event #35: $5,000 Eight-Handed No-Limit Hold’em.
Last year, this event served as the second overall event of the series and the first open event, kicking off the summer with a bang. The event drew a total of 481 entries and in the end Trevor Pope claimed the bracelet. On top of the golden bracelet, Pope also pocketed a whopping $553,906 in first-place prize money.
On the final day of last year’s event, Pope came into the final table with over half of the chips in play. He made quick work of his seven competitors, defeating the table and claiming the title in less than four hours. Pope bested a final table that included the likes of David Peters, Brandon Meyers, Dan Kelly, Jamie Armstrong, Jared Hamby, and Darryll Fish. In the end, Pope defeated David Vamplew heads up for the win.
Players begin with 15,000 in chips and blinds will start at 50-75. On Day 1, play will last for 10 60-minute levels before bagging and tagging for the evening.

We arrived at the table just in time to see 2012 Big One for One Drop champion Antonio "The Magician" Esfandiari taking his leave from the tournament area. From what we could gather by the end of the hand, Esfandiari and an opponent looked down at a board. On the river, Esfandiari's opponent bet 1,600 and the Magician check-raised all in for what looked to be 8,200. His opponent called and showed . Esfandiari tabled for an open-ended straight draw that did not get there.

We arrived at the table in time to see Tony Dunst and Kunal Patel take a flop of in a raised pot. Dunst was first to act and led into the middle with a bet of 700. Patel called to see the drop down on the turn.
Dunst continued his aggression, flinging forward 2,000 in chips but announcing a bet for less which we did not hear. Patel spent a bit of time in the tank before moving all in for 9,250 total. Dunst nodded his head and dropped forward the rest of his stack, signifying a call.

Patel was in the lead with is flopped set of treys and looked primed for a double-up heading to the river. Fifth street was the , giving Patel treys full of fours for the win. He now has right around 22,500 in chips while Dunst has dropped down to just about 3,000.
Dunst was eliminated from play soon after.
