Welcome to Event #58: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed. Play will kick off at 3pm today here at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino.

The defending champion is Nadar Kakhmazov, who walked away with the $580,338 first place prize. He finished top of a field of 574 runners, which included some big names. Some of those made the final table with Kakhamazov, including runner-up Chris Hunichen, Kenny Hallaert and Faraz Jaka.

Players start with 25,000 chips and ten 60-minute levels are on the schedule for today. There will be a 20-minute break every two levels. Late registration is open until the start of Day 2, giving registrants plenty of time to get down and play.

A Few More Faces

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Sam Cohen, Javier Fernandez and Michael Marder have all been spotted in their seats.

Michael Marder should be riding high off his success here at the series already. He finished 3rd in the $2,500 a few days ago and it is his first time at the WSOP. He already has numerous cashes on the circuit, perhaps he can add another high finish to his resume.

Early Pot for Baldwin

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Eric Baldwin
Eric Baldwin

Eric Baldwin already has one World Series of Poker gold bracelet under his belt this summer, coming in Event #37: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em where he picked up $319,580 to go with it. Now he is looking to add more to his impressive resume as he has taken his seat early on today.

After a raise to 250 from the button, Baldwin just called from the big blind. The flop came {q-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} and Baldwin checked to his opponent who bet 150. Baldwin check-raised to 500 and his opponent called.

The turn was the {3-Diamonds} and both players checked to the {4-Spades} on the river. Baldwin fired another 1,150 and his opponent looked him up. Baldwin tabled {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} and that was good enough to take down an early pot.

Fernandez Takes Early Pot

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Javier Fernandez has already reached the top 20 of the $2,500 this year, plus earlier in 2018 he final tabled the EPT Monte Carlo. Perhaps the $5,000 6-handed will also be successful for him. He's off the mark already, having just taken a pot at showdown.

Fernandez and one other opponent were facing a flop of {3-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{2-Diamonds}. His opponent checked and Fernandez bet 300, which was called. There was a {4-Clubs} on the turn and this time it went check-check. The river card was a {7-Hearts}. After a third check, Fernandez bet 800. It was called and Fernandez turned over {3-Spades}{4-Spades} for two pair, which was good to take the pot.

2016 Main Event Champion Steals One on the River

We arrived at the table to find 2016 Main Event champion, Qui Nguyen, heads-up in the middle of a hand. The board read {q-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} and Nguyen checked from the hijack to his opponent who bet 725 on the button. Nguyen called and the {6-Diamonds} completed the board.

Nguyen checked again and his opponent pushed in a bet of 1,800. Nguyen wasted little time before check-raising to 4,900 which prompted a quick fold from his opponent.
