Michael Mizrachi Off to Strong Start in Record Field for $1,500 Eight Game

The previous four editions of $1,500 Eight Game Mix all fell short of a 500-player mark but the 2019 edition brought a new record with 612 registrations to the tournament. Day 1 saw 225 players bag up advancing stacks and they will return to the felt on Monday, June 10, at 2 p.m. local time.

There is a $177,294 first-place prize on the horizon but there is still a long road towards the bracelet ahead of the remaining players. Their first objective will be to sneak inside the top 92 places to secure at least a minimum cash.

If there is a player who is usually going straight for the top prize, it has to be four-time bracelet winner Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi. Renowned for his aggressive style and unprecedented success in the $50,000 Poker Players Championship (he has won the Chip Reese Trophy three times), Mizrachi is usually seen either near the top of the counts or out of the tournament altogether. The former applied for today as Mizrachi finished the day with 74,500, nearly three times the average stack.

"I don't know how to bluff anymore," Mizrachi said to Ivo Donev during the day. However, Mizrachi proved that he still has some moves up his sleeve. He will surely eye WSOP bracelet number five to take the lead in family rankings. He's currently tied with his brother Rob who himself just missed the chance to earn his fifth, finishing third in the Omaha 8 Championship today.

Along with The Grinder, there are dozens of accomplished players coming back for Day 2. Russian player Aleksandr Gofman (95,800) impressed on a table where he sat between Phil Hellmuth and Brian Yoon. Hellmuth also navigated through, thanks to his second bullet. He'll return to 13,200 chips.

Matt Glantz, John Cernuto, Andrey Zaichenko, and Carol Fuchs have all reported promising chip stacks and so did former champion of this event Ron Ware (45,100). Ware's successor to the throne, defending champ Philip Long also advanced. Long is right around the virtual average line with 26,000.

Jameson Painter raised from the button and called when small blind David Bach raised. Bach took one and Painter took two. Painter called another bet and they repeated their previous draw. Bach fired again and Painter called to continue to the final draw where they discarded one apiece. Bach check-called Painter's bet but mucked his hand as Painter showed {8-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-}.

Benny Glaser raised in the cutoff and he got a call from the big blind who peeled two while Glaser needed one. Glaser bet in position and his opponent called again. They drew one each and Glaser put his last 900 forward, receiving a call. He patted against a one-card draw but he failed to dodge the lethal bullet as his opponent finished with a rough eight.

Maria Ho opened the button to 800 and Philip Long defended his big blind with a call. Long check-called another 700 on {k-Spades}{4-Clubs}{5-Hearts} and they both checked the {6-Clubs} turn.

The river came {9-Spades} and Long bet out 2,600. Ho double checked her hand, gave it a brief thought and then folded.

"Oooh, you should have gone all in," said Eric Wasserson, sitting across the table.

"Probably," Ho replied.

In a battle of blinds, Chris Klodnicki fired what looked like a pot-sized bet of 3,100 on the turn reading {4-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}. His opponent called and the {10-Hearts} completed the board. The action was checked to Klodnicki who potted. The other player would have to commit nearly all of his chips to call, and he quickly decided that it wasn't worth it.

With action caught on the second draw, Phil Hellmuth took one, his left-hand neighbor patted and Brian Yoon changed two. Yoon and Hellmuth both called a bet and they changed one apiece on the final draw.

Hellmuth checked, and Yoon raised a bet from his opponent.

"What a spooky f***ing hand," Hellmuth grumbled and then he threw his cards away, accidentally exposing {7-}{4-}{2-}. The third player three-bet and Yoon quickly called only to see his opponent show {7-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-} for the nuts.

Hellmuth stormed from his chair to release some accumulated energy and then he returned back to his 12,500.
