Everybody Wants a Shot at Layne Flack

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Layne Flack
Layne Flack

Layne Flack's presence is providing for a lively table at Pavilion Black #185.

Lance Tahata tripled up in a three-way hand against Flack and one other opponent, reraising for the last of his 90,000 chips on a flop of {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{4-Hearts} and getting calls from both the hijack, and Flack on the cutoff.

The turn came the {a-Clubs}, and the hijack bet 100,000, which Flack called. The river came the {j-Hearts}, each player put another 100,000 in the side pot, and both turned over {a-}{j-} to chop up the side chips. Tahata got the best of it, however, turning over {4-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} and getting just about the best possible result from his all-in move.

Elsewhere at the same table, Ernie Gormaz said he took 200,000 off of Flack in an earlier pot, with his {q-}{q-} taking down {k-}{k-} when a queen hit on the flop for a set. Gormaz noted that Flack played the hand well and lost the "bare minimum."

"Triple Grammy Winner and I'm Just Losing"

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante

Tony Mercedes, who's produced some of the most well-known artists around, can't work his magic with the cards when fortune fails to smile. He's sat at another upbeat table, however, and grinding a short stack of 175,000 with the best of them. Tablemate Ali Zihni said of neighbour Alan Ho (sandwiched between Zihni and Mercedes), "He's a luckbox!" and no denial from Ho was forthcoming.

A Few Chip Counts

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante

Joseph Schulman, last year's ninth-place finisher in this event, is still hanging in with a 25-big-blind stack; WSOP bracelet winner John Esposito is doing the same with his 37-big-blind stack; and Scott Allacher is surging toward the top of the chip lead counts as Level 18 winds down.

Greenstein Sticking Around

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Barry Greenstein
Barry Greenstein

It's been tough to catch Barry Greenstein in the act of playing a hand today, but he's booked a money finish in this event and currently sits with a 50-big-blind stack.

The legendary three-time bracelet winner did play a couple of consecutive small pots; the first saw Greenstein call a middle position open for 25,000 from the small blind, and check the {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{6-Clubs} flop. The opponent checked back, and Greenstein checked again on the turn. This time the middle position player put in a bet and Greenstein wasted no time folding.

Greenstein was on the button in the next hand, making an attempt to steal the blinds when the action folded to him. His 18,000 bet was three-bet all-in by the small blind, however, and Greenstein once again instantly folded.

Donev and Hammersmith Feature on Entertaining Table 164

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Ivo Donev
Ivo Donev

This event has seen many chat adepts keep their whole tables involved in hands whether their own chips are at risk or not. There's barely an ipod to be seen and after eight hour-long levels some rivalries and friendships have spiced up the action on tables that have kept a steady line-up.

John Hammersmith open-jammed all in for 106,000. Action folded to Ivo Donev, who was tapping at his phone (he received a telling-off from the dealer and swerved a player's joking suggestion that his hand should be dead). Phone down, he thought for a while, then said, "Jesus. Jesus - it's the first time I make a good laydown. Nines."

No one else called Hammersmith and he said, "Pocket threes," throwing his cards towards the dealer. They hit a stack of chips, however, and flipped over as {a-}{j-} to much hilarity.

Yousefzadeh Gets Back to a Million

Level 17 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Mehrdad Yousefzadeh
Mehrdad Yousefzadeh

Mehrdad Yousefzadeh chipped back up over the 1-million mark with a small win, on a hand that saw him open for 17,000 from early position. The player to his left called, and the flop came {a-Spades}{10-Clubs}{k-Clubs}.

The action checked all the way through on all streets, and Yousefzadeh took it down with {a-}{5-} against his opponent's {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}.

Kennedy Stands as his All-In Fate Decided

Level 17 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante

Mike Kennedy (from Cleveland, as his avidly railing friends assert) has won a big pot with a flop shove that remained uncalled after a long, tense few minutes. The big blind led out for 70,000 on a rainbow board of {10-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}. Over to Kennedy, who moved all in for 113,000 more, which started a tank from his opponent, who had less than 240,000 behind himself. Kennedy stood up behind his chair, his friends stood up straighter on the rail. Finally he won with no showdown, stacking a healthier 265,000 chips.

"You're just showing off because your friends were there," said Louise Francoeur (the table seems to be enjoying itself banter-wise). Said friends instantly received the benefit of a quiet run through of the hand on which the rest of the table struggled in vain to eavesdrop.

Chip Counts

Level 17 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante

Mark Kroon and Mehrdad Yousefzadeh are both hovering over the 1-million mark; Konrad Koss' stack has taken a bit of a hit, down to 555,000 from it's 700k peak; and Day 1 chip leader Adilson Moraes is coming back down to earth, down to 335,000.

The player seated directly to Moraes' right, Howard Mash, is up to 940,000.
