A New World Champion Will Emerge; 354 Left in Contention on Day 5 of 2019 WSOP Main Event

Three-time Super Bowl winner Richard Seymour made it to Day 5
Three-time Super Bowl winner Richard Seymour made it to Day 5

Over the course of three starting days, two Day 2s, and two more full days following that, a field 8,569 players in the 2019 World Series of Poker Main Event has been whittled down to its last 354 hopefuls. Making it to Day 5 of the richest poker tournament on the planet has already guaranteed everyone $34,845, but with the stakes at its highest, the battle for a spot among the final nine and a payday of at least $1,000,000 and, ultimately, the top prize of $10,000,000, is just beginning.

One thing is for certain, there will be a new world champion of poker crowned when all is said and done. Yesterday, the three former world champions left - Chris Moneymaker, Qui Nguyen, and Johnny Chan - were all eliminated, paving the way for a new player to claim poker's most coveted prize.

The one currently holds the lead in the race for that distinctive honor is 888poker Qualifier Dean Morrone, who bagged 4,980,000, over 200 big blinds, on Day 4. The Canadian is followed by Lars Bonding (4,040,0000) of Denmark, Michael Messick (3,925,000) of the United States, and Warwick Mirzikinian (3,900,000) of Australia to make it an international affair at the top. Danish players appear once more in the top 10, as super high roller Henrik Hecklen (3,862,000) rounds out the top five.

Antonio Esfandari
Antonio Esfandiari will be in action on Day 5 of the 2019 WSOP Main Event

Plenty of notables will be back in action on Day 5 as well, with Andrew Brokos returning with a top 10 stack for the third day in a row with 3,518,000. Others such as Preben Stokkan (2,900,000), former New England Patriots defensive lineman and three-time Super Bowl winner Richard Seymour (2,750,000, lead photo), Big One for One Drop champ and poker icon Antonio Esfandiari (2,583,000), Craig McCorkell (2,580,000), the son of 2005 World Champion Joe Hachem Daniel Hachem (2,450,000), Romain Lewis (2,368,000), and Dario Sammartino (2,302,000) are all still hoping that this year is 'their' year.

Todd Brunson (1,151,000), Mike Matusow (726,000), and 2013 WSOP Main Event runner-up Jay Farber (436,000) will also be back on Day 5, while Allen Kessler, who finally got the monkey off his back by making his first-ever cash in sixteen WSOP Main Events (after cashing last year's WSOPE Main Event as well), will return as one of the shortest stacks in the room with 240,000 in chips.

Gonzalez Scores Double Knockout

Level 21 : 12,000/24,000, 24,000 ante
Fabrizio Gonzalez
Fabrizio Gonzalez

Fabrizio Gonzalez raised to 52,000 from early position and David Goodman moved all-in from middle position. Jay Farber then moved all-in from the button for 200,000 and Gonzalez asked for counts before making the call and putting both players at risk.

Fabrizio Gonzalez: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}
Jay Farber: {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}
David Goodman: {4-Spades}{4-Diamonds}

The board quickly ran out {6-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} with Farber rapping his knuckles on the table as the river fell and the dealer yelled for a double payout, ending both Farber and Goodman's Main Event bids while Gonazalez enjoyed the returns from his rivered pair of aces and stacked his newly earned chips.

Matusow on the Road to 10 Million

Level 21 : 12,000/24,000, 24,000 ante
Mike Matusow
Mike Matusow

The action folded to Mike Matusow on the button who made it 50,000 to go. Guofeng Wang announced all in from the big blind and Matusow instantly called by piling his 400,000 chips into the middle.

Mike Matusow: {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}
Guofeng Wang: {6-Spades}{6-Clubs}

The board ran out {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{3-Hearts} and Matusow's pocket kings held on to double up to where he started the day.

"This is the start of my ten million run. I promise you, this will be ten million by the end of today," Matusow told the cameras. "In just two orbits, I've had as many playable hands as I did all of yesterday."

Ved Makes Big Call for Pot of Two Million

Level 21 : 12,000/24,000, 24,000 ante
Kartik Ved
Kartik Ved

With a large pot of about 800,000 in the middle, the board read {k-Spades}{7-Spades}{2-Hearts}{6-Spades}{a-Spades}. From the hijack, Joshua Gordon led out with a river bet of 570,000. This bet sent Kartik Ved, who was on the button, deep into the tank. He contemplated and studied the wet board and assessed Gordon.

After about three minutes Ved tossed in the call. Gordon had no spade and showed the {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} which was a welcome sight to Ved who tabled his winning hand of {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs} to take the pot of nearly 2 million.

Turner Turns the Flush

Level 21 : 12,000/24,000, 24,000 ante
Jon Turner
Jon Turner

Jon Turner raised to 55,000 from the late position and Milos Skrbic three-bet to 170,000 from the hijack. Action folded back to Turner who made the call.

They both checked through the {10-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{7-Clubs} flop to the {j-Clubs} on the turn. Turner fired a bet of 225,000 over the line and Skrbic called after confirming the amount.

The river completed the board with the {a-Spades} and now Turner barreled a bet of 600,000 into the pot which Skrbic snap-called. Turner tabled {k-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for the turned flush which was good enough to scoop the pot as Skrbic looked resigned and flashed {a-}{k-} for the Broadway.

Mental Game Series: Todd “DanDruff” Witteles on Right Track in Life and 2019 WSOP Main Event

Level 21 : 12,000/24,000, 24,000 ante
Todd Witteles
Todd Witteles

If there’s ever been a poker player who tells it like it is, that player is Todd “DanDruff” Witteles. Not only does he host Poker Fraud Alert where he sheds light on any shadiness and controversy going on in the poker world, but anyone who follows him on social media knows he’s also opened up about struggles in his personal life.

That includes suffering from severe anxiety and depression, as well as anhedonia – the inability to feel any kind of pleasure. For a while, it took over his life, but things are different.

“I don’t know if I have more pep in my step but I’m very thankful that I came back from what happened to me last year,” Witteles explained. “In August I had the worst month of my life. For a few months after that I was pretty bad too. I developed a chemical disorder in my brain that caused very severe anxiety, depression, and some other very bad psychological issues where I was very messed up.”

He continued: “I could think logically but I could not overrule the way I was feeling. I’d never had those types of problems in my life before, so I wasn’t someone who had dealt with it my whole life. I didn’t know if I’d even come back from it. I knew it was something chemical, there wasn’t something in my life that happened to cause this.”

Fortunately, Witteles was able to overcome those difficulties as highlighted in the linked article below. For now, Witteles is in action today and looking to make the most of his 2019 WSOP Main Event experience.

Chad Power
Chad Power

Chad Power made a river bet of 500,000 over to his opponent, Preben Stokkan. The board read {2-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{q-Spades}{q-Clubs} and a pot of about 750,000 was already in the middle. Stokkan deeply considered it before calling.

Power had the hammer as he turned over the {q-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} and added chips to his stack which is nearing 5 million.

Double Knockout With a Twist for Rand

Level 21 : 12,000/24,000, 24,000 ante
Kevin Rand
Kevin Rand

Marc Foggin jammed for the last 344,000 and the action was on John Lombardo on the button, who gave it a lot of consideration. One of the players on the table called the clock on Lombardo, who was given 25 seconds to act and made the call within that time for 60% of his remaining stack.

Kevin Rand in the small blind pushed all in and Lombardo called it off to create a three-way showdown.

Marc Foggin: {k-Spades}{10-Spades}
John Lombardo: {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}
Kevin Rand: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}

Foggin picked up a flush draw on the {6-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{4-Spades} flop while Lombardo was drawing very thin. The {9-Spades} turn left Lombardo drawing dead while Foggin suddenly went from worst to best hand and needed to avoid another spade to triple up. However, the {j-Spades} fell on the river and that locked up the double knockout for Rand.
