WSOP Legend: Doyle Brunson’s Final Bracelet, 15 Years Later

At the beginning of the 2005 WSOP, Doyle Brunson remained the co-king of the all-time bracelet count, tied along with Johnny Chan at nine. However, as the series drew toward its close in late June, that was no longer the case — Chan had overtaken him by winning No. 10 to stand atop the mountain alone.
Brunson was already phasing out his tournament play, having cashed precisely zero times that summer and just three times in the previous two combined, although one had resulted in a bracelet victory.
When it came time for Event #31: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed, Brunson dusted off his tournament chops and made a run. Through a field of 301, he made the final table, where he sat second in chips behind fellow multiple-bracelet winner Layne Flack, with Scotty Nguyen also occupying a seat.

Success in the WSOP Main Event is the dream of pretty much every tournament poker player. Some have achieved that dream, making it to the final table and competing on the grandest stage the game has to offer. A select few have had the fortune of winning, immortalizing themselves on banners that hang on the walls of the Amazon Room every year.
No player, however, can match the incredible three-year run put together by Johnny Chan.
A 10-time bracelet winner and participant in high-stakes cash games both televised and not during his career, Chan has plenty to point to when it comes to poker plaudits. But no matter what he accomplishes in this game, it seems more likely than not that he'll be most remembered for what he did in the WSOP Main Event from 1987-1989.
