Hellmuth Makes More WSOP History

Level 26 : 80,000/160,000, 160,000 ante
Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth's place in WSOP history was already solidified before this tournament as a 16-time bracelet winner and former Main Event champ. There is one more distinction he now owns: the most WSOP final tables in a single year.

This is Hellmuth's seventh appearance at a WSOP final table in 2021, breaking the record held by An Tran since 1992. All seven have come in a different poker discipline:

  • Sixth in Event #2: $25,000 H.O.R.S.E.
  • Fifth in Event #9: $10,000 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship
  • Fourth in Event #19: $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship
  • First in Event #31: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw
  • Second in Event #36: $10,000 Dealers Choice Championship
  • Eighth in Event #78: $10,000 Razz Championship

Bujtas Drops to Short-Stack After Doubling Petersen

Level 26 : 80,000/160,000, 160,000 ante
Alexander Petersen
Alexander Petersen

Alexander Petersen called from the small blind and Laszlo Bujtas checked his option. The flop came {2-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{3-Clubs} and Petersen led out for 200,000.

Bujtas called to see the {q-Diamonds} turn. Petersen bet 880,000, Bujtas raised, and Petersen called for 1,050,000 total.

Alexander Petersen: {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}{2-Spades}{2-Clubs}
Laszlo Bujtas: {q-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{6-Spades}{5-Hearts}

Petersen had flopped a set of deuces to take the lead, while Bujtas was drawing to a gutshot straight. The {10-Spades} on the river improved Petersen to the broadway straight and ensured his double up.

Negreanu Getting Aggressive

Level 26 : 80,000/160,000, 160,000 ante

Daniel Negreanu raised to 450,000 from the cutoff and Jeremy Ausmus defended his big blind. The flop came {8-Clubs}{8-Spades}{4-Diamonds}, and Ausmus check-folded to a bet of 375,000.

The previous hand, Negreanu had won the pot uncontested with a preflop raise from under the gun. With those two pots, he has now eclipsed the 10,000,000-chip mark.

Laszlo Bujtas Eliminated in 5th Place ($279,168)

Level 27 : 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante
Laszlo Bujtas
Laszlo Bujtas

Laszlo Bujtas raised to 700,000 from under the gun before Phil Hellmuth re-raised enough to put him all in. Bujtas called for 370,000 more.

Laszlo Bujtas: {k-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{6-Spades}
Phil Hellmuth: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{5-Spades}

The flop came {a-Spades}{q-Clubs}{9-Clubs}, giving Hellmuth top two pair and the nut flush draw. The {7-Spades} turn gave Bujtas outs to a straight and a flush.

"Hold, baby," Mike Matusow said from the rail.

The {q-Spades} on the river completed Bujtas' flush, but it also gave Hellmuth a full house to win the pot and send Bujtas home in fifth place.

Ausmus Flops Boat to Double Through Negreanu

Level 27 : 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante
Jeremy Ausmus
Jeremy Ausmus

Daniel Negreanu opened to 600,000 and Jeremy Ausmus called in the big blind.

Ausmus checked on the flop of {j-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{8-Hearts} and Negreanu bet 800,000. Ausmus then check-raised all-in for 2,000,000 and Negreanu tanked for nearly two minutes before calling.

Jeremy Ausmus: {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}{7-Spades}{6-Diamonds}
Daniel Negreanu: {a-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{6-Spades}{2-Diamonds}

Ausmus had flopped a full house while Negreanu had a mere pair. The {a-Hearts} on the turn gave Negreanu outs to a better full house but the {10-Spades} on the river locked up the double for Ausmus.

It was but a flesh wound for Negreanu, who still maintained the chip lead after the hand.

Ausmus Doubles Through Negreanu Again

Level 27 : 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante
Jeremy Ausmus
Jeremy Ausmus

Jeremy Ausmus raised to 700,000 from the button and Daniel Negreanu defended from the big blind. The flop came {6-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{2-Spades} and Negreanu led out for 1,200,000.

Ausmus raised all in for 4,700,000 and Negreanu called after a brief tank.

Jeremy Ausmus: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{6-Spades}
Daniel Negreanu: {k-Hearts}{9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}

Negreanu's nines and straight draw were trailing the pocket aces of Ausmus and got no help on the {4-Spades} turn or the {3-Hearts} river. Ausmus doubled through Negreanu for the second time and took the tournament chip lead.
