Shooting Across Street from WSOP, Color Up Controversy & Event Cancelled | PokerNews Podcast #897

Level 22 : Blinds 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante

In the 897th episode of the PokerNews Podcast, Chad Holloway and Kyna England are joined by PokerNews Ontario Ambassador Kyle Anderson, who fills in for Mike Holtz. The trio discusses the deadly shooting that took place across the street from the 2025 World Series of Poker (WSOP) in front of the Bellagio Fountains, and then dives into the color-up controversy involving Tyler Brown, who shared his story with PokerNews.

Kyna then sounds off on the cancelled WSOP Online bracelet event, Michael Lavin won a gold bracelet and an extra $1,000,000 thanks to ClubWPT Gold, and Benny Glaser claimed two bracelets early in the summer. Other tournament winners include Josh Reichard, Brad Ruben, Blaz Zerjav, and Nick Guagenti, who denied Chino Rheem his first bracelet.

After recapping Dusti Smith's win in the Wynn Ladies High Roller and a look ahead to some upcoming poker charity events, Chad shares details on his recent Live Reality Game (LRG) adventure in which he left the WSOP for 10 days to compete in a Survivor-based game, Surviving Reelfoot Season 13, in the woods of Tennessee.

Soverel Takes from Weiss

Level 22 : Blinds 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante

Sam Soverel raised to 90,000 from early position before Dennis Weiss three-bet to 315,000 from the hijack. When it folded back to Soverel, he called.

Both players checked the 510J flop to see the 4 appear on the turn. Soverel potted it, causing Weiss to go into the tank. Weiss only had around 500,000 left in his stack, and after a bit of thinking, Weiss let go of his cards.

Jonathan Depa Eliminated in 19th Place ($28,936)

Level 22 : Blinds 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Jonathan Depa
Jonathan Depa

Jordan Siegel raised to 80,000 under the gun and Christopher Vitch called in the hijack. Jonathan Depa then three-bet to 335,000 in the big blind and only Vitch called.

Depa got in his last 150,000 on the J75 flop and Vitch snap-called.

Jonathan Depa: A542 All in
Christopher Vitch: A654

Both players had a pair of fives with a draw to the same low and were poised to chop the pot as the 2 fell on the turn. The river was the A and Vitch made a running flush and played his 64 for the low to scoop the pot and send Depa to the rail in 19th place.

"If you had done that to me, the friendship would've been over," Siegel told Vitch after the hand.

Deeb Doubles Through Hastings

Level 22 : Blinds 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante

Jonathan Greene opened the cutoff to 80,000 and Brian Hastings called on the button. In the small blind, Shaun Deeb potted to 320,000 and only Hastings called.

On the 983 flop, Deeb jammed for 210,000 and Hastings called.

Shaun Deeb: A942 All in
Brian Hastings: A854

Deeb held top pair and the better low draw against the middle pair of Hastings. The 103 runout changed nothing as no low was possible and Deeb scooped with a pair of nines.

Hui Doubles Through Soverel

Level 22 : Blinds 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante

Narcis Nedelcu limped first to act and Sam Soverel limped the hijack before Loni Hui potted to 165,000 from the cutoff, and both opponents called.

On the J76 flop, the action checked to Hui who jammed for 310,000. Nedelcu folded and Soverel called.

Loni Hui: AJ92 All in
Sam Soverel: AQ104

Hui was in great shape with top pair and the better low draw. Nothing changed on the 58 runout as Soverel was left with just ace-high and a worse low.

"That's probably a fold pre, right?" Soverel asked tablemate Dennis Weiss, "If I'm trying to play good."

Edengren Bombs Away at Greene; Kessler Focused on Fantasy

Level 22 : Blinds 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante

"Ninth place is the next points bubble," Allen Kessler said, checking the status of his fantasy team.

"You also make an additional $26,000," Bruno Furth reminded him.

Meanwhile, at another table Magnus Edengren had raised to 90,000 under the gun and Jonathan Greene called in the hijack.

The flop came 3J5 and Edengren bet 150,000. Greene called to the 5 turn, where Edengren bet another 250,000. Greene again called.

The 4 fell on the river and Edengren bet 1,000,000, enough to cover Greene's remaining stack. Greene spent the next several minutes in the tank as Kessler wandered over to the table.

"You're guaranteed to make 13th place. Way above your expectations in any other tournament," Greene's tablemate Shaun Deeb told Kessler.

Greene eventually folded and Edengren took the pot.
