Solheim Leads, Avivi Close Behind on Day 1 of $1,500 H.O.R.S.E.

Level 15

A record-setting 867 players made their way to the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas to take place in Event #39: $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. — considered by many to be their favorite event of the year.

The freezeout format ensured a rapidly diminishing field and, by the time bags were dispersed, just 195 players remained. Sitting atop the leaderboard is Michael Solheim, who appears to be a newcomer to the tournament-poker scene with just two cashes from mixed-game events at the WSOP since 2023. Solheim didn't let his apparent lack of experience slow him down, however, as managed to bag up 345,500, which is nearly four times an average stack.

Not far behind is circuit grinder and two-time WSOP Circuit ring winner Tal Avivi, who managed to bag up 305,000. Rounding out the top three is Nicolas Milgrom, who ended as the only other player to breach the 300k mark with 302,000.

Also in the top ten is three-time bracelet winner Greg Mueller (273,000), who already has two deep runs under his belt in this year's WSOP in the $1,500 Seven Card Stud and $10,000 2-7 No-Limit Draw Lowball Championship. Mueller's most-recent bracelet came in the $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. back in 2019 and he looks poised to make a run at another title in this variant.

Further down in the counts are notables abound, including Ryan Leng (229,000), Nick Guagenti (221,000), Calvin Anderson (185,500), Scott Bohlman (150,000), Brian Yoon (138,500), Tamon Nakamura (124,500), Jeff Lisandro (98,000), and Linda Johnson (29,500), to name a few.

Among the less fortunate who were eliminated include Alex Livingston, Bryce Yockey, Steve Zolotow, Barry Greenstein, Phil Hellmuth, Benny Glaser, and Scotty Nguyen — who made his first appearance at the 2025 WSOP but was unable to gain any real momentum throughout the day.

This year's record-setting field resulted in a prize pool of $1,150,943. A total of 131 players will take home at least $3,017 and the eventual winner will receive $197,923 in addition to the gold bracelet.

Jeff Madsen: 4x2x/5x5x6x6x/Qx
Wendy Freedman: Ax9x/5x3xQx3x/6x
Andrew Robinson: XxXx/AxKx7x - folded on fifth street

Three ways on fourth street, Wendy Freedman bet and was called by Andrew Robinson and Jeff Madsen.

Freedman bet again on fifth, which got a fold from Robinson and a raise from Madsen. Freedman called.

On sixth street, Madsen paired his six and Freedman bet after pairing her three. Madsen raised again with just a couple hundred behind and Freedman raised to put Madsen all in. Madsen called and hands were revealed.

Freedman peeled a 6x to end with a nine-low and Madsen turned over a Qx — eliminating him from the tournament.

Linda Johnson
Linda Johnson

Omaha Hi-Lo

Poker Hall of Famer Linda Johnson, affectionately known as the "First Lady of Poker", has been paving the way for women to compete in the male-dominated world of poker for decades and is off to a good start.

In a recent hand, Ian Steinman opened from middle position and was called by Johnson in the hijack. Makoto Nagino three-bet on the button and was called by Scott Carlson in the big blind as well as Steinman and Johnson for a four-way pot.

Action checked through on the 310A flop and it was checked to Johnson again on the 10 turn. Johnson made a bet and all of her opponents quickly folded in turn.

Karim Alway: XxXx/106AJ/Xx
Yuri Dzivielevski: XxXx/JA - folded on fourth street

Yuri Dzivielevski called the bring-in with his jack and David "ODB" Baker completed. Karim Alway called and Dzivielevski called as well for a three-way pot.

Baker continued for a bet on fourth street and was raised by Alway. Dzivielevski got out of the way and Baker made it three bets to go. Alway called.

Alway then called bets from Baker on fifth through seventh.

"I'm rolled up. Twice in six hands!" Baker said as he revealed 884.

Alway sent his hand into the muck and Baker was sent the large pot.

Time for the Card Jockeys to Get Ready for $1,500 H.O.R.S.E

Phillip Hui
Phillip Hui

Welcome back to PokerNews, the official media partner of the 2025 World Series of Poker and home of live updates from all bracelet events.

Giddyap, folks! Event #39: $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. (8-Handed) is about to get underway here at Horseshoe and Paris, Las Vegas.

This three-day mixed-game event will start at 2 p.m., and late registration will remain available until the end of nine 40-minute levels (about 8:45 p.m.). There will be a 15-minute break every three levels, and the day is expected to end after Level 15.

Players will start with 25,000 in chips. If they have any chips remaining at the end of Day 1, they will reconvene for Day 2 at 1 p.m. on June 12.

Last year's winner Phillip Hui beat an almost record field of 835 players. He took on Daniel Mayoh heads up, winning his fourth bracelet and $193,545 from a prize pool of $1,114,725. Hui found himself as a 10:1 chip underdog, but pulled off an epic comeback to come out on top.

"This is my favorite event — my favorite variant of poker," Hui said. "I have a second, a third, maybe a fourth? [In H.O.R.S.E. events]. It feels really good."

When I won my first bracelet in 2014 in the O8, I was 16:1 down heads up and came back," he said. "When I won the PPC I was down 4:1 and then when I won the PLO [in 2022] I literally never had over 20 big blinds until I got heads up."

Hui credited his exposure to sports psychology while playing golf as a child for his ability to never give up.

"If you have chips or you're in the tournament or you're in the game of whatever sport, you can't give up. It's cliche, but I try to center myself after every hand, whether I played a hand poorly or not. I just tried to stay focused and take one hand at a time."
