Ramana Epparla Bags the Lead in $5,000 Seniors High Roller No-Limit Hold'em

Level 20 : Blinds 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Ramana Epparla

Day 2 of the 2025 World Series of Poker Event #40: $5,000 Seniors High Roller No-Limit Hold'em at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas saw 325 players battle it out, including some Day 2 late registrants. Only 47 are set to return to continue their journey on Day 3 Saturday. The total prize pool sits at $3,684,600 with $646,845 up top, smashing last year’s prize pool by more than $500,000.

Ramana Epparla leads the way with a massive 2,625,000 stack. He will have his eyes on the first place prize and the WSOP bracelet, particularly after coming so close in the $600 No Limit Hold'em - Ultra Stack event in 2024, where just missed out on winning his first bracelet after being defeated heads up by Carsten Heidemann.

Theo Jorgensen is a close second going into Day 3. He had a great run as he eliminated Frederick Wolf and Rudolph Bourg late in the day, allowing him to spin into second place in the counts.

Two 25K Fantasy players, David Stamm and David "ODB" Baker are also sitting high in the top ten. Baker will be looking to secure another bracelet to add to his already impressive collection of three WSOP gold bracelets.

Many notables came and busted on Day 2, including Kathy Liebert, who got her aces cracked by Baker's tens in a brutal elimination just before the final break of the day.

Five-time WSOP bracelet winner and Hall of Famer John Juanda made it to the last level of the day, and the pay jump, before he was eliminated in 58th place. Billy Baxter, the seven-time bracelet WSOP winner, was still in contention until the last few hands of the day. France’s Antonin Teisseire also made the money, but missed out on collecting another bracelet. It was a star-studded tournament as other WSOP bracelet winners who cashed were Mark Seif, Eric Smidinger and Martin Raus.

A number of other 25K Fantasy players jumped into the field, including Dan Shak, Jon Shoreman, Erik Seidel and Xixiang Luo. They all made it to Day 2, but didn’t make the money.

Douglas Makes Massive Laydown

Level 17 : Blinds 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Champie Douglas
Champie Douglas

Action was picked up on the turn, with a board reading QA82. The pot was heads up, contested between Champie Douglas and Thomas Brownscombe.

Brownscombe had checked to Douglas, who bet 40,000 into 83,000. Brownscombe pondered before making the call, bringing in the 3 river. Yet again Brownscombe checked, and this time Douglas sized to 60,000, before being check-shoved on. Douglas asked for a count, which amounted to 411,000, meaning if Douglas called and was wrong, he would only have 5 big blinds to his name.

A long tank ensued, as Douglas milled over his options for over four whole minutes. In the end, he folded A3 face up, announcing "pocket eights in the house." "Show me an eight!" he added. Brownscombe refused and returned his cards face down.

Epparla Takes Seven Figure Pot

Level 15 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Ramana Epparla
Ramana Epparla

John Esposito woke up with a hand under the gun and opted for a raise to 18,000. It wouldn't stand for long, however, as next to act Ramana Epparla bumped it up to 45,000. Patrick White was the third player in a row to get involved, as he cold-called the three bet. Finally, players started to fold, and action got back to big blind Stuart Taylor.

Taylor took his time in making a decision, and was really in the blender. "Somebody call clock on me," he eventually asked the table, and the dealer called over the floor who started the countdown. As he reached the last couple of seconds, he released his cards, claiming that he'd made a "massive fold". Esposito called, sending three players to a flop.

On a 593 flop, Esposito checked in flow, and Epparla put 125,000 out there. White then shoved, and was snapped off by Epparla after Esposito's fold.

Patrick White: QQ All in
Ramana Epparla: AA

Both players turned the flush on the 4 turn, but Epparla's was superior, and the 9 river was inconsequential as White just missed out on making the money. Taylor revealed that he had indeed made a massive folding, having laid down AxK

Matusow Jams River

Level 14 : Blinds 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Mike Matusow
Mike Matusow

Mike Matusow played a sizeable pot against Jun Liu to chip up. The hand began when Liu raised to 10,000 from early position and was called by David Gonzalez from the hijack. Mike Matusow decided to raise it to 30,000 from the cutoff. Liu called, and Gonzalez folded.

Liu checked the 667 flop over to Matusow who slid out another 30,000 bet. Liu came along with a call.

The A turn saw Liu take the betting lead with a bet to 65,000. Matusow gave it some thought before he pushed out a call.

Liu slowed down on the 2 river with a check. Matusow asked for it all going all in for approximately 170,000. Liu quickly folded to end the hand.

David Gonzalez busted shortly after the hand to exit the tournament.
