Recent $50,000 High Roller champion Jason Koon has joined the $250,000 field and brought a gift for Seth Davies, who he was seated to the immediate left of.

Koon brought Davies, who is having a fantastic year of his own, a Burberry denim shark bomber jacket that retails at $5,500 — just a small fraction of the six-figure buy-in they are paying today.

Koon could buy another 350 jackets with the $1,968,927 he won as he moved into third on the poker all-time money list.

Playing Poker

Level 1 : Blinds 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Alex Kulev
Alex Kulev

Leon Sturm and Alex Kulev were heads-up in a pot that seemed innocent enough in the early going, but quickly turned violent. On a flop of J53 Kulev checked from the big blind and Sturm tossed in a bet of 12,000 on the button. Kulev called and the 2 landed on the turn.

After a check-raise from Kulev on the turn, both players committed 250,000 each to the pot, creating a pot of nearly 600,000. The river was the 10 and Kulev announced all in for 1,228,000. Sturm asked for a count and burned through two time banks before laying down his hand.

"We're playing poker now," Brandon Steven joked at the table.

"If you get dealt pocket fours, what are you supposed to do?" Jason Koon rhetorically asked.

Oganyan on the Birth of Taxation

Level 2 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Aram Oganyan
Aram Oganyan

Leon Sturm and Brandon Steven played a pot at Table 71 as Aram Oganyan keynoted an interesting conversation about taxation, world history and simulation.

Sturm opened to 17,000 on the button and Steven and Kulev called as Oganyan, who recently finished second in the $100,000 High Roller for $1,766,099, complained about taxes, arguing that human societies thrived for hundreds of years before the invention of taxes. Nick Petrangelo corrected him on his history: "You think they invented taxes in 1971?"

"So the Egyptians paid taxes?" Oganyan asked.

"Yes," said Jonathan Jaffee.

"I have no idea," shrugged Oganyan. "I just thought it was a simulation. I don't think any of that stuff even happened."

"I don't like this conversation," said Alex Kulev. "I'll sit this one out."

As the conspiracy-ridden discussion played out, Steven and Sturm checked down the board of 9792 before Steven bet 77,000 on the 8 river to take the pot.

Jesse Lonis
Jesse Lonis

Jesse Lonis put Ben Heath to a tough decision on a board of K9366.

Lonis bet 303,000 on the river with less than that in the pot. Heath went deep in the tank and used two time extensions before calling. Lonis rolled over AA and Heath sent his cards to the dealer before getting moved to another table.

Chris Hunichen
Chris Hunichen

Andrew Lichtenberger raised to 26,000 in early position and Chris Hunichen shoved all in for his last 319,000 in the cutoff. The action was back on Lichtenberger who quickly called to put Hunichen at risk.

Chris Hunichen: KQAll in
Andrew Lichtenberger: AK

The flop came AQJ to give each player a pair, but Lichtenberger was the one still out front. The 5 and 8 runout changed nothing, sending Hunichen to the rail.

Eibinger Out After Bluffing River with Seven-High

Level 5 : Blinds 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Matthias Eibinger
Matthias Eibinger

Matthias Eibinger made a courageous play that led to his demise in one of the biggest pots of the tournament so far.

PokerNews got to the table late but had the full action recounted by Brandon Steven.

Eibinger opened in the cutoff and Steven three-bet in the big blind. Eibinger called.

Steven continued with a small bet on the flop of 2A8 and Eibinger called. Steven then bet 240,000 on the 9 turn and Eibinger raised to 800,000. Steven called.

Steven checked on the 4 river and Eibinger moved all in for around 300,000 into the pot of over 2,000,000. Steven sighed and pushed out a call, leading Eibinger to sheepishly turn over 76 for just seven-high with a busted straight and flush draw.

Steven then showed AJ to win the massive pot and send Eibinger to the registration desk in the biggest buy-in of the summer.

Brandon Steven
Brandon Steven

Brandon Steven hardly had time to stack the chips he got from Matthias Eibinger before Nick Petrangelo opened from under the gun and Leon Sturm three-bet to 90,000 on the button.

Steven then four-bet to 272,000 in the small blind and Petrangelo remarked "tough table" before folding. Sturm called.

Steven continued for 107,000 on the flop of 7KJ and Sturm called. Steven then checked on the Q turn and Sturm bet 280,000. Steven called.

Steven checked again on the 10 river and Sturm checked back. Steven showed AA for Broadway to win the pot.

Bryn Kenney
Bryn Kenney

Joao Vieira opened from under the gun and two players called before Bryn Kenney three-bet to 225,000 in the big blind. Vieira then four-bet to 500,000 and the two players folded before Kenney five-bet jammed his remaining stack. Vieira called.

Bryn Kenney: QQ All in
Joao Vieira: AK

Kenney stayed ahead in the flip on the flop of 772, but Vieira picked up flush outs on the 10 turn before the K river landed to give him the best hand to send Kenney to the rail.
