The Curious Case of the Missed River Bet
If Giorgos Onisiforou was hoping to play a little one-on-one poker, he'd need to find another spot.
Starting the action off, Onisiforou raised in early position to 1,300. Next to act, Kenna James called. The player on the button called, the small blind called, and of course, the big blind stuck around too.
The dealer spread a flop of 9♠9♥10♦, and when action checked to him, an undeterred Onisiforou continued with a bet of 2,300. James called to his immediate left, and all other participants folded.
Onisiforou took a more cautious approach to the following streets. Check-calling a bet of 5,500 on the 5♠ turn, before checking again on the K♦ river.
James took a moment or two to mull over his options on the river, but decided safety was paramount and checked back.
Onisiforou proudly tabled Q♥Q♣, but received bad news. James had rivered a straight with his Q♦J♠.
"You forgot to bet", quipped Onisiforou. "You either had queens or kings", was the response from James.
