Shaun Deeb Towers Over the Remaining 281 in $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em

Level 16 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Shaun Deeb

Day 1 of Event #84: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em at Horseshoe and Paris, Las Vegas, saw a massive 1,873 entries, smashing last year’s field of 1,424. This year’s prize pool reached $1,648,240, with first place set to take home $232,498.

Many notables came and went early. This year marked the first time the event allowed one reentry, as last year was a freezeout. The only returner from last year’s final table was Suhail Khan, who finished fourth in 2024 for his biggest career cash, and has already secured several cashes this series. However, he didn’t quite make the money this time and was eliminated halfway through today’s play.

Although Shaun Deeb didn’t get off to a strong start — busting his first bullet after running into pocket kings — he made the most of his second entry. Deeb gradually built his stack, and a pivotal hand late in the day saw him swap stacks with the chip leader to claim the top spot in the counts. He held on to the lead and will head into Day 2 with nearly double the stack of Liao Yinghsiang, who sits second in chips.

Several previous WSOP bracelet winners joined the field as well. Among those who bagged chips for Day 2 were Harry Lodge (193,000) — who won his second bracelet in an online event last week — Jinlong Hu(182,000), Max Kruse (161,000), and Alen Bakovic (140,000). However, others weren’t so lucky. Guo Liang Wei was the unfortunate bubble boy, eliminated on the final hand of the night by Congya Zhang, who ended with quad kings.

Martin Kabrhel also jumped into the event. After busting in two consecutive all-ins, he reentered, still confident after telling players he’d see them “at the final table.” However, his second run was not better, and he was eliminated again shortly after.

Since Day 1 play halted when the money bubble burst, the remaining 281 players are all in the money and guaranteed at least $2,006. They will return at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, and resume play in Level 16 with 3,000/6,000 blinds with a 6,000 big blind ante. Levels remain 30 minutes long and there will be 15-minute breaks every four levels. Play will continue until a winner is crowned.

Players were already on the river, with Rittie Chuaprasert sitting under the gun and Shaun Deeb in the hijack.

The players were looking at the A9710Q board and the pot stood at around 70,000.

Chuaprasert had bet 25,000 and Deeb had raised to 100,000.

Chuaprasert went into the tank and took a couple of minutes to make the call.

Deeb said "Set,” before showing 1010 and Chuaprasert mucked.

Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Martin Kabrhel

Martin Kabrhel moved all in from early position for his remaining 23,800 stack. Justin Chang called his remaining 14,800 chips sitting to his direct left.

Chang held on the J109710, leaving Kabrhel with 9,000.

Kabrhel called his own fate when he said "All in, last hand" as he moved in his stack from under the gun. He was quickly called by Wenjie Kan in the hijack.

Kabrhel picked up a ten on the 3J10 flop, but Kan also hit a jack.

The K turn saw Kabrhel stand from the table, and the 3 river sealed his fate. He remarked, "Put me out!" to the dealer. So he could rebuy and take his seat at another table.

He walked away and said to the remaining players, "See you at the final table.”

Deeb Re-Enters after Running into Kings

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Shaun Deeb
Shaun Deeb

Shaun Deeb opened to 2,000 from under the gun and Oleg Vasylchenko three-bet to 5,500 from the cutoff. Deeb four-bet to 14,000 and Vasylchenko asked Deeb "How much behind?", with Deeb responding "About 50k".

Vasylchenko five-bet jammed for his remaining 80,000 stack, and Deeb snap called.

Deeb was behind and didn't find any help on the J24 flop.

Vasylchenko stayed ahead on the A turn and 5 river, sending Deeb to the rail.

Deeb rebought and took a new seat in the tournament only moments later.

Suhail Khan Is Back for Redemption

Level 5 : Blinds 300/500, 500 ante
Suhail Khan
Suhail Khan

Suhail Khan is back at the World Series of Poker, returning to the same event where he made his breakout run last year.

Khan lost his job at the end of 2023 and moved here from San Diego with just $260. On his first day in Vegas, he entered a small tournament at South Point Casino and min-cashed. A player at his table wished him luck and said, “Vegas will make you or break you.”

Last year was the first time Khan played the entire series. His summer started strong, finishing 42nd in the $700 + 300 No Limit Hold'em - Mystery Millions. After that deep run, he decided to enter the $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em tournament, which was a freezeout style last year —Khan’s favorite type of tournament. Khan said freezeouts “Keep me in check.”

Khan successfully battled through the 1,424 field to finish fourth, earning $65,731. Khan came away from that summer thinking, “Wow, I did make it.”, and his love for poker grew. He is currently the only 2024 final table player to return to the field this year.

Khan now splits his time between poker and his job in technology. He’ll be one to watch—having already cashed in four WSOP events this summer—as he looks to improve on his lifetime record during the rest of the series.

It's a 5 p.m. Start for the $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em Event

Welcome back to PokerNews, the official media partner of the 2025 World Series of Poker, and your go-to source for coverage of every WSOP bracelet event.

We’re heading into the holiday weekend with Event #84: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em, a fast-paced two-day affair that kicks off Friday, July 4 at 5 p.m. local time inside Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas.

Players will start with 20,000 chips and 30-minute levels. Late registration will be open until the end of Level 10 (approximately 10:45 p.m.). Only one reentry is permitted per player.

Day 1 will play down to the final 15 percent of the field, with Day 2 resuming at 2 p.m. on Saturday and continuing until a winner is crowned. Breaks come every few levels, and a dinner break will be announced as needed.

Last year's event saw India's [Removed:532] top an impressive 1,424 field to earn his first bracelet and $189,661.

Although this was [Removed:550]'s career-first bracelet win, it was certainly no accident, as he explained to PokerNews after his win:

“I've been a professional, I think, for twenty years now. I'll be turning forty this year, and I've played in the World Series every year since I was twenty-one!”

Thanking his rail, [Removed:550] also added, “They’re more than my friends; they’re my students. I would like to give a shout-out to them. They have definitely helped me be the player I am. This feels good. It's been a rough summer, so this definitely feels good.”
