Crowded House

"Pro Row"
"Pro Row"
Though their man was eliminated early this morning in third place, the Dennis Phillips Clone Army is still out in force, many of them having wandered over from his victory party to watch the heads-up action. Also here to sweat the action are Daniel Negreanu, 2006 Main Event Champion Jamie Gold, Jeff Madsen, Miami John Cernuto, Cyndy Violette, Chris "Jesus' Ferguson, Hevad "Rain" Khan, and Barry Greenstein.

Positioned on opposite sides of the room are the respective cheering sections for Eastgate and Demidov-- Eastgate's clad in black t-shirts that say "It's in the Stars" and Demidov's supporters wearing a mishmash of red capes, fur hats, and ornate, brocaded caftans.

Meet Your Final Two

Jack Effel just introduced our final two players, Peter Eastgate and Ivan Demidov to the crowd. Both men are unbagging their chips in the shadow of a mountain of cash-- $9.1 million in all-- that is now resting atop the table. The bracelet sits at the top of it all, gleaming under the TV lights. Who will be its new owner?

Action should be underway in a few minutes.

Player of the Year Presentation

TD Jack Effel introduced WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack for the Player of the Year presentation. The 2008 Player of the Year, "a very popular winner, a guy who had to wait a long time to get his very first bracelet," is Erick Lindgren.

Lindgren came out on the stage to a rousing ovation.

"Wow, this is awesome," he said. "I can't believe all you people are here to watch poker."

Speaking about the Player of the Year Award, Lindgren said, "I feel truly honored. Some really great players have won this award." He then added, " You guys get to watch some great players play heads-up tonight. One more thing -- Doyle Brunson told me to tell them that there is a cash game tonight after they're done."

A custom Harley-Davidson motorcycle awaits Lindgren backstage.

A Little Bit of Patience

Although cards were supposed to have been in the air by now, we're running a bit behind schedule. The money is on the table and the showgirls are here, but there still seems to be a fair amount of scrambling to and fro by WSOP employees. One encouraging sign is that the ESPN people are taking their places at the video cameras. Stay tuned...

Take Your Places

The Penn & Teller Theater is open, and fans are streaming down the aisles to take their seats for what many hope will be an epic heads-up match. The line of people waiting to get in before doors opened stretched out the theater and down the hall past the Sao Paolo Cafe, but there was less pomp and pageantry than yesterday.

According to the official schedule, the Player of the Year presentation will take place ten minutes from now, at 9:55pm local time. Erick Lindgren won Player of the Year this year and will be presented with a custom, engraved Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

A few minutes after that, Ivan Demidov and Peter Eastgate will unbag and stack their chips. When they're ready to go, Jeffrey Pollack will welcome us all back before turning the microphone over to legendary emcee Michael Buffer for the player introductions.

If everything stays on schedule, cards will be in the air at 10:04pm with just less than nine minutes left on the clock in Level 37.

The Final Countdown

Tonight, a new name will be added to that list and the fates of two young guns, Peter Eastgate and Ivan Demidov, hang in the balance. Two men enter, but only one will walk away from the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event with the money, the fame and the title of World Champion.

No matter how things unfold, poker history will be written this evening. Should Eastgate win, at 22 years old he would become the youngest player ever to win the Main Event, an accolade currently owned by 11-time bracelet winner and 1989 Main Event Champion Phil Hellmuth, Jr. The young Dane enters the heads-up match as its chip leader with 80,300,000 and if last night's crowd is indicative of what we can expect tonight, Eastgate will have the upper hand with fan support, courtesy of good friend Jesper Hougaard and his band of "Ooba, Ooba" hooligans.

On the other side of the fence sits 27-year-old Russian up-and-comer Ivan Demidov, who has already accomplished what many might argue is one of the greatest feats in tournament poker history. Last month, Demidov made the final table of the WSOP-Europe Main Event, ultimately finishing in third place, earning a £334,850 payday. In doing so, Demidov became the first player in history to reach the final table of both the WSOP and WSOP-E Main Events. What's more, he did so in the same year! A win tonight would likely set the bar so high that no one will ever even come close to matching this feat. Demidov has plenty of ammunition to get the job done, as he returns to the felt with 56,600,000 in chips.

Our coverage of the November Nine final table will recommence at 10:00 p.m. Las Vegas time (GMT -8) on Monday, November 10. Join us then for every flop, every raise and every showdown as Peter Eastgate and Ivan Demidov go head-to-head for the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event Championship!
