Event #23: THE MARATHON - $2,620 No-Limit Hold'em

Day 3 Completed

Faraz Jaka

Faraz Jaka ended Day 3 as the chip leader of Event #23: THE MARATHON - $2,620 No-Limit Hold'em with a stack of 2,838,000. Maurice Hawkins finished second with 2,423,000 and John Phan sits in third with 2,374,000. Fifty-six players are still in the running for the $690,469 top prize and the WSOP gold bracelet.

The day started with 268 players and 264 of those would be in the money. As expected, hand-for-hand play started quite quickly. There was only one all-in during the first hand of hand-for-hand play and Pascal Hartmann did not manage to stay in the tournament.

Maurice Hawkins had a strong start to the day and never really disappeared from the top of the chip counts. But Faraz Jaka really kept building his stack all day long. There are many other notables left in this field, including Ana Marquez (1,035,000), Upeshka De Silva (799,000), Eric Baldwin (617,000) and Kristen Bicknell (401,000).

Play resumes Thursday at 12 p.m. in the Brasilia room and is scheduled to play seven 100-minute levels again. The PokerNews live reporting team will be there to catch all the action so do come back to follow it all.

Hawkins Takes One From Jaka

Maurice Hawkins

With about 200,000 in the pot and the board showing {5-Hearts}{6-Spades}{3-Spades} {9-Spades}, action was on Faraz Jaka in the big blind and he checked. Maurice Hawkins was in early position and fired out a bet of 133,000. Jaka called.

The river was the {10-Hearts} and Jaka checked again. Hawkins took a moment and then fired out a bet of 500,000. Jaka thought for a minute and then elected to fold, showing {5-}{3-} for two pair as he mucked his hand.

Biggest Fold of the Tournament?

Level 19 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Faraz Jaka
Faraz Jaka

Faraz Jaka and Pratik Ghatge got into a massive pot. Unfortunately the action was partially recounted to us so we don't have the full story for you.

Jaka and Ghatge went heads up to a flop of {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{9-Diamonds}. Jaka check-called on the flop and the turn was the {10-Hearts}. Jaka check-called again and the river was the {3-Diamonds}. Jaka check-shoved the river, having Ghatge covered. Ghatge had about 850,000 remaining at the time and had what appeared to be a 300,000 bet in front of him on the river. After tanking for a long time, Ghatge elected to fold.

This is where it got very interesting. Ghatge asked Jaka if he would show and Jaka said, "You can pay to see," setting the price at $100. Ghatge snap-called that offer and Jaka told the dealer to show his hand. The dealer flipped over {q-}{10-} giving Jaka a full house. Ghatge then said to the dealer, "show mine." The dealer opened his hand and showed {10-}{10-} for the fourth nuts and a smaller full house. The entire table was amazed at Ghatge's fold. He even got a tap of the table from Jaka.
