Day 1B Concludes

THE FIFTY-- Day 1B play has come to a close, with the survivors now bagging and tagging their chips. They will return to the tables on Thursday (Day 2B) to continue their quest for a WSOP bracelet.

Tune in tomorrow at 2 p.m. for more chip-slinging action from London. Signing off from the Fifty, and I dare say I'll miss this place (especially the free food!)

Day 1b Complete

From the Empire Casino...

Play has been suspended for the day.

Lee Nelson Doubles Up

Lee Nelson, playing in the £5,000 PLO event
Lee Nelson, playing in the £5,000 PLO event
THE FIFTY-- Lee Nelson's roughly 20,000 stack found its way to the middle on a {J-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{A-Hearts} board. His opponent turned up {J-Spades}{J-Hearts}, having flopped top set, but Nelson turned the better set with {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}. The river was the {7-Spades} and Nelson got a late-night double-up to 42,000 only five minutes before the close of the day's play.

Bengt Sonnert Eliminated

THE FIFTY-- On a board of {9-Spades}{7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{6-Hearts}, Bob Willis bet 4,000, Bengt Sonnert moved all in for 12,700 and Willis called. Willis turned over {8-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for two pair and an open-ended straight flush draw, while Sonnert showed the {A-Spades}{7-Spades}. The river was the {9-Diamonds}, making Sonnert sevens full of nines, but Willis the better full house with nines full of sevens, and Sonnert headed to the rail.

Peter Jespen Doubles Through Jamie Gold

Peter Jespen the Gold Hunter
Peter Jespen the Gold Hunter
From the Empire Casino...

Over at the featured TV table, I caught the hand on the flop of {9-Clubs}{7-Spades}{3-Clubs}. Jamie Gold fired out 2,000 from the big blind and Peter Jespen moved all in for 9,750 more. Jamie Gold went into the tank for about four minutes and talked to himself the entire time. He waivered back and forth between wanting to call and wanting to fold. He counted out 9,750 in chips as Jespen sat motionless.

"OK, I call," said Gold as he tabled {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}.

Jespen flipped over {7-Clubs}{6-Clubs} and was ahead with second pair and a flush draw. The turn was the {10-Hearts} and the river was the {7-Spades}. Gold's hand could not improve and Jespen increased his stack to over 25,000.

Razor Tongue

Its folded round to Ian 'The Razor' Fraser in the small blind. He asks the big blind, "Are we friends?" as he completes.

"Yes we are," is the reply as we see a flop:

check check

check check

Fraser bets 1000 and the big blind calls and shows {J-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}.

"You lucky B*&%$£," Fraser says.

So much for friends.

Zee Justin Loses Zee Pot

From the Empire...

Here's the hand, plain and simple, no thrills... just like me.

Flop = {5-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{3-Spades}

Jimmy Fricke (UTG) checks, Justin Bonomo (button) bets 4k, Jimmy calls.

Turn = {A-Hearts}

Jimmy checks, Justin checks

River = {J-Clubs}

Jimmy checks, Justin bets 10k, Jimmy calls.

Justin taps the table, Jimmy shows {A-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}, Justin mucks.

Justin down to 29,000.

Robin Keston's Aces Cracked

From the Sportsman --

Well, the title kind of gives up any element of surprise, so you know what he had when he re-raised all in preflop (over the top of button John Tabatabai). It was about another 8k to call, in any case it was most of Tabatabai's stack, and he did think about it for a while before just throwing in the call and turning over his hand: {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}

The flop: {10-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{9-Clubs}
Turn: {K-Clubs} Now the other players at the table were leaning in...
River: {J-Clubs}

A cracked Keston headed stiffly from the table (as you would). Meanwhile, Neil Channing, who hasn't to my knowledge played any hands today, is nevertheless a gold mine of interesting information about other players. Robin Keston once infamously folded Kings preflop in an odd hand in the Poker Million (to do with a read on someone for huge strength due to their enormous last-longer side bet) but has played today in a solid style, going out with the most legitimate of legitimate hands, unluckily.

Meanwhile John Tabatabai rides up the rollercoaster lift before heading for another dive/loop-the-loop combo with his stack.
