No Laak of Trying

Phil Laak and Jennifer Tilly just strolled in, casually joining play on tables which, in my area, are still mostly six and seven-handed. Pretty much immediately Laak has his entire stack in the middle (3,400 into a pot of 825) on a flop of {6-Clubs} {Q-Spades} {10-Hearts} . His sole opponent Kim Rossland declines to call. Laak sports the Union Jack on his T-shirt today, while Tilly - who is taking the start of the tournament a little more calmly - the less home-crowd-pleasing Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Mr Serious

Sleepy-looking Paul Lammas is already down to 4,000 after falling victim to fellow Brit Azzy Asghar.

Also on the British theme, Josh Tyler and his astounding hat are up to around 7,000 after betting and calling a raise from a German opponent on a {6-Clubs} {8-Hearts} {4-Spades} flop and then betting out on the {8-Clubs} turn, forcing his opponent to quietly fold, shaking his head. "I come in peace," said Tyler after a few moments. The German eyed him suspiciously. "You know, I've given you your name," continued Tyler, who, on the table next to Matusow's, could well end up giving the Mouth a run for his money on garrulousness. "I'm going to call you Mr Serious." No reaction from the German.

Early All In

With 6,000 in chips, it doesn't take too long to witness an early all in. That accolade went to the wonderfully named Metin Aksoy (three "pardon" replies led to him writing it down on my pad), who pushed his final 4,500 across the line on a {7-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{4-Spades} board and with several thousand already in the pot. James Akenhead thought and thought, before thinking a tiny bit more, and making the fold.

Roberto Sapiano-ed

In a clash of the British whose names surprisingly end in 'o,' the unpredictable Albert Sapiano, honey magnate and recent fixture on the tournament scene, got into a big confrontation with Roberto Romanello, Welsh whiz-kid with a doctorate in table talk.

Romanello had gotten his entire stack in with the board reading :
{8-Hearts} {6-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} {7-Clubs} . Sapiano had made the call and I could just see his {J-Hearts} {J-Spades} in bad shape against Romanello's flopped set - {6-Clubs} {6-Spades} .

The river... {J-Clubs} Romanello, originally getting up to leave, actually covers Sapiano by 225, but the game is pretty much up. As he stood with a pained expression, he got a rubdown of lemon juice squeezed in the papercut of defeat:

"You know why that happened? Because you lie. God punishes those that lie."
"I always lie!" Romanello stood his ground - I imagine some kind of chat was part of the reason Sapiano called his bet.
As I write this, Romanello exits. "You always do me!" he exclaims at Sapiano as he makes his rueful exit.

Howard You Feel?

Another casual late arrival is one Howard Lederer, already up to around 6,600. Despite apparently not saying a word since he strolled in a few minutes ago and generally appearing to be immersed in serious but slack-jawed contemplation of the structure sheet, he can still strike fear into the hearts of his tablemates. A young opponent bet out 325 on a {3-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs} {6-Spades} flop, only for Lederer to expressionlessly make it 1,100. With a slight look of shock, or possibly awe, the opponent passed.

The Worm Turns on Mizzi

UK circuit fixture Mickey "The Legend" (or "The Worm", depending on who you talk to) Wernick has been contributing to the early unhappiness of Sorel Mizzi. Mizzi laid his hand down on the turn of a king-high, two-hearts board and Wernick showed him the {K-Hearts} {10-Hearts} for his troubles. Mizzi remained in good spirits, but is now down to just 1,700 after a serious of minor disasters.

Cowboys Gunned Down

WSOP bracelet winner Jesper Hougaard has just eliminated an online qualifier believed to be Frenchman Benjamin Eter. The hand in question was somewhat of a cooler, Eter leading out for 625 on a {9-Spades}{8-Clubs}{3-Clubs} flop before pushing over the top of Hougaard's reraise to 1,750. The Dane called with little hesitation and revealed a drawtastic {J-Clubs}{10-Clubs}. Eter tabled {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}. The {9-Clubs} turn was emphatic, but left Eter with a slight glimmer of hope, but it was to no avail as a harmless{6-Clubs} hit the river.

Three-Way All In Bonanza

The board reads a possibility-filled {9-Spades} {10-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds} {7-Clubs} and Amir Englund bets 1,275. Now Thomas Marchese announces all in. And then Javed Ghazi goes all in over the top of Marchese. Englund goes into the tank while the table holds its collective breath. He calls!

Ghazi: {A-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds} for the flush
Englund: {8-Hearts} {8-Clubs} for the full house
Marchese: {9-Hearts} {9-Clubs} for quads

Javed Ghazi is out, Amir Englund wins the side pot but still makes a loss on the hand, and Marchese is up to 9,000.

Caught in Annette

Any requests?
Annette Obrestad is in seemingly fine fettle and confident of adding another bracelet to her previous triumph. On a {Q-Clubs}{6-Spades}{2-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{A-Hearts} board, the online star made a cracking call for 1,600 with pocket sevens. Her wounded opponent could only muck meekly and gently tap the table.

Obrestad now on 8,000.
