Small One for Convey

We checked in with our very own Marc Convey, who has stepped away from his blogging duties to play in the Main Event, and caught him raising to 225 from middle position. The cutoff made the call, as did Aku Joentausta in the small blind, and it was three-way action to the {J-Spades}{2-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}.

Joentausta check and Convey did what he's seen tens of thousands of time while live reporting, he put out a continuation-bet of 400. It proved enough to do the trick as both the cutoff and Joentausta folded without resistance.

Aguiar Starting to Build Stack

Jon Aguiar, who played until 5:00 AM last night in the final heads up match of Event #5: €10,450 Mixed Max - No-Limit Hold'em, is currently seated here among the rest of the players in the room. Although Aguiar's match did not finish last night, that did not deter him from playing in the Main Event.

We found him take a step in the right direction when he opened to 250 and was called by the big blind. The flop was {3-Hearts}{7-Spades}{5-Hearts} and the big blind checked. Aguiar continued for 350 and his opponent called. The {A-Spades} came on fourth street and both players tapped the table to see the {4-Clubs} fall ont he river.

The big blind checked for a third time and Aguiar bet 900. His opponent folded and he took down the pot.

October Niner Thomas Takes on Charania

Mohsin Charania opened for 250 under the gun and was met with a three-bet to 800 from Russell Thomas, who you may know as a member of this year's October Nine. Action folded back around to Charania and he called, bringing about a flop of {Q-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}.

Both players proceeded to check, and then Charania bet 1,050 on the {5-Diamonds} turn. Thomas called that bet, but he didn't call Charania's bet of 2,650 on the {4-Clubs} river.

Former Champ vs. Future Champ?

Jesse Sylvia
Jesse Sylvia

Back in 2005 Joe Hachem took the poker world by storm taking down the World Series of Poker Main Event. The Australian pro has been on the tournament circuit ever since. After his $7,500,000 victory he also won the the Doyle Brunson North American Poker Classic for $2,207,575, and added a runner-up finish in the $2,500 6-Max at the 2006 WSOP to his name.

As of right now Hachem has $11,776,100 in live tournament earnings putting him in 10th place on the all-time money leader board. Jesse Sylvia is currently number 14,855 on the all-time money leader board, but that number is rapidly going to change next month. Sylvia will start the 2012 WSOP Main Event final table with a big chip lead, and he's already guaranteed to win at least $754,798. The ultimate goal for Sylvia will be to capture the gold, and the $8,527,982 first place prize.

Today these two players will be facing off against each other, and maybe the veteran will have to tips for the rookie.

Home Game Over at Table 4

We stumbled upon Table 4 to see Derek Wolters and Jake Balsinger, who is a member of the coveted October Nine, both check the river on a board reading {K-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{7-Spades}{7-Clubs}. Wolters just shook his head and tabled {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades} for kings full of sevens, which was good enough to take down the 2,000 pot. "I should have bet the river," Wolters lamented.

Daniel Weinman then informed us an interesting fact: "Three roommates at one table playing five handed." Indeed, Balsinger, Weinman and Wolters are all roommates. "Our own little home game over at Table 4."

Rettenmaier Applying Pressure

Marvin Rettenmaier opened to 250 from under the gun plus one and received a middle position caller as well as a call from the big blind.

The flop was {5-Spades}{3-Spades}{4-Hearts} and it was checked to Rettenmaier who c-bet 350. The player to his immediate left folded and the big blind called. The {J-Clubs} turned and it was checked to Rettemaier again. He bet 825 and his opponent folded, awarding him the pot.

Convey Hurt By Andrulis

Marc Convey has had a bad start after just losing a big pot to Kristijonas Andrulis. Convey explained how he got involved in a three-bet pot with pocket fours against both Andrulis and Philipp Boucher.

The flop brought out {10-}{6-}{4-} with two spades, and Convey check-raised Andrulis from 1,500 to 4,000. Boucher bailed out and Andrulis called. The {5-Spades} hit on the turn, and both players checked.

The river was the {A-Hearts} and Convey bet 3,500. Andrulis put out a big raise to 12,500 and Convey ended up making the call with his set. Andrulis had {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and his turned straight took down this big pot.

Shorr Bests Thomas

Action folded to Octo-Niner Russell Thomas in the cutoff seat. He opened with a raise to 300 and was called by Shannon Shorr on the button. The player in the big blind also called, and the dealer ran out the {J-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} flop.

On the flop, action checked to Thomas. He fired 500 with Shorr making the call. The big blind check-raised to 1,500, but couldn't shake either of his opponents as Thomas and Shorr both called.

The turn brought the {7-Hearts} and kept things red. The big blind checked, and Thomas fired 2,700. Shorr called, then the big blind folded.

After the {4-Hearts} landed on the river, Thomas and Shorr each checked to get to the showdown. Thomas tabled the {A-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for a missed draw, holding just ace high. Shorr held the {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a pair of eights and was awarded the pot.
