Deeb Strengthens WSOP PoY Bid; Second After Day 1 of €1,650 6-Max

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Shaun Deeb
Shaun Deeb

Coming off one of the hottest summers in recent memory, four-time WSOP bracelet winner Shaun Deeb has journeyed across the Atlantic to King's Casino in Rozvadov to play in the 2018 World Series of Poker Europe with one goal in mind: to become part of World Series of Poker history and have his banner draped across the Amazon Room of the Rio All Suites Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Winning the WSOP Player of the Year race is a highly sought-after accolade in poker and Deeb's claim is looking even stronger after taking second place on the first day of Event #2: €1,650 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed Deepstack. A total of 221 entrants created a prize pool of €318,074 — smashing the guarantee — and after 14 levels of 40 minutes each, only 39 of them are still in contention. They will return at 2 p.m. on Monday, five places away from the bubble.

The only player to surpass Deeb (373,000) on Day 1 was Milad Oghabian from the Netherlands, who racked up 457,500 in chips to distance himself from the rest. Three hands were key to Oghabian's overall end of day chip lead, as he told PokerNews at the end of the day. Firstly, holding king-queen of spades, Oghabian got it in on a jack-high flop with two spades against Michal Mrakes' jack-nine. The turn and river brought a queen to give him the double.

Perhaps Oghabian's most important hand and certainly the boldest one came up next, in a three-bet pot against Christian Bertu. Holding nothing but queen-ten, as he would disclose later, Oghabian floated two streets in position on a jack-jack-five-five board. An innocuous trey rolled off on the river and Bertu check-folded to Oghabian's shove with the queen-high. A little while later, Oghabian won his third big hand with pocket tens against pocket aces in a three-bet pot. A ten flopped to secure the end-of-day lead for the Dutchman.

Behind Oghabian and Deeb, Van Tiep Nguyen (364,500) and Chin Wei Lim (324,000) follow in third and fourth. There are plenty of notables among the 39 survivors, each looking for the coveted WSOP bracelet that's up for grabs. Big names such as Michael Soyza (240,500), Pete Chen (204,500), Asi Moshe (184,500), Jerome Sgorrano (179,500), Manig Loeser (179,500), Rex Clinkscales (117,000), Maria Lampropulos (115,500), Roland Israelashvili (68,000), and Cord Garcia (44,000) made it through the action-packed day that had three- and four-bets flying everywhere.

For players such as Dutch Boyd, Anthony Zinno, Bertrand Grospellier, Hakim Zoufri, Vojtech Ruzicka, Guoliang Wei, and Jeff Madsen, the day came to an early end after using up either one or both of the allowed bullets.

Cards will be back in the air on Monday, October 15 at 2 p.m. local time five places away from the bubble. Action is expected to be fast and furious again given the 6-max format, and play will continue until the final table is reached. The finalists will then return on Tuesday, October 16 to contest for the bracelet and the first place prize of €82,280. PokerNews is your one-stop shop for start-to-finish live coverage of all ten bracelet events at the 2018 World Series of Poker Europe, so make sure to check back regularly as the action in King's Casino is heating up.

Speranza Drags A Monster

Level 13 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Gianluca Speranza
Gianluca Speranza

Gianluca Speranza limped from the small blind, Asher Dahan raised from the big blind and Speranza called. The flop was {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{4-Clubs} and Speranza checked. Dahan bet, Speranza check-raised, and Dahan three-bet shoved for around 200,000.

The massive shove got called off by Speranza to create the biggest pot of the tournament by far.

Asher Dahan: {9-}{4-}
Gianluca Speranza: {J-Clubs}{6-Clubs}

Speranza was ahead with the flopped flush and needed to dodge the nines and the fours to claim the chip lead. The turn and river remained safe for him and he soared to over 400k.

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
James Bullimore
James Bullimore

After a raise from Stanislav Koleno and a call from Asher Dahan, James Bullimore three-bet from the big blind and both Koleno and Dahan called. On the {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{5-Spades} flop, Bullimore continued with 9,400, a small bet in relation to the pot, Koleno called, and Dahan folded.

The turn was the {7-Clubs} and Bullimore checked. Koleno moved all in for 33,500 and Bullimore called it off.

Stanislav Koleno: {A-Spades}{9-Spades}
James Bullimore: {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}

Koleno was miles ahead with his top pair and nut flush draw and the experienced Slovakian grinder, one of the well-known faces here in Rozvadov, held up on the {5-Clubs} river for a big double-up.

The End of the Shirtless Massage

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Van Tiep Nguyen
Van Tiep Nguyen

One of the perks of King's Casino is the ability to enjoy a fully shirtless massage at the table. Removing one's shirt isn't as frowned upon in these parts of the Czech Republic as it is in most places, and Ghassan Yared happily indulged himself into one of the pleasures offered to visitors of the small Eastern European municipality of Rozvadov.

However, his enjoyable endeavor got cut short after a clash with Van Tiep Nguyen. After Yared had three-bet to 12,000 on the button, Nguyen four-bet shoved and Yared went deep in the tank, perhaps considering the possible end of his visibly joyous non-stop rub as well.

After the clock got called on him, Yared eventually decided to splash in his remaining stack of around 45,000 total.

Ghassan Yared: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}
Van Tiep Nguyen: {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}

Board: {4-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}

The board was as decisive as they'd come and Yared was forced out of the tournament. Not to be denied, he quickly sat down at an open table nearby and continued his massage like nothing has happened. The floor, however, quickly stepped up and put an end to it, seemingly restricting these shirtless perks only to those still alive in the tournament.

Bendinelli Eliminates Covyn

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Danny Covyn
Danny Covyn

Danny Covyn raised to 2,100 in middle position and Chin Lei Wim called on the button. Giuliano Bendinelli three-bet shoved 24,800 from the big blind, Covyn called all in for slightly less and Wim snap-folded.

Danny Covyn: {A-Clubs}{J-Clubs}
Giuliano Bendinelli: {K-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}

It was an exciting rundown for the casual onlooker with {J-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{10-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}, and ultimately it would be Bendinelli who would snag it to end Covyn's attempt.

Deeb Clashes With Katzenberger, Doubles Wiecek

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Shaun Deeb
Shaun Deeb

Shaun Deeb has tumbled down the leaderboard after a series of clashes with Viktor Katzenberg that moved the latter up to around 150,000. According to Leo Armino, who's seated at the same table, in the final hand that transpired just before we arrived, it was a three-bet pot where Deeb got it in with {10-}{7-} on a {10-}{8-}{6-}{J-} board against Katzenberger's {A-}{J-}. Katzenberg held up for a big double to leave Deeb behind with 51,000.

In the hand directly after, Piotr Wiecek opened on the button, Deeb three-bet shoved from the big blind and Wiecek called all in for 21,200.

Piotr Wiecek: {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}
Shaun Deeb: {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}

Board: {9-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}

There was no sweat for Wiecek as he scored an easy double-up at Deeb's expense

Speranza Sends Mach to the Rail

Level 3 : 100/200, 200 ante
Jan Mach
Jan Mach

With the board reading {A-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}, Jan Mach was in the small blind and bet a little over 5,000, which was called by Gianluca Speranza on the button.

Mach had about 10,000 left when the {8-Clubs} popped up on the river and he checked. After thinking for thirty seconds, Speranza shoved all in and Mach called after two minutes with the {A-Clubs}{J-Hearts}. Speranza showed him the bad news with {2-Diamonds}{2-Spades} for a set of deuces.

Mach, who had a deep run in this year's WSOP Main Event (40th - $189,165), will have to go for his single re-entry.

Event #2: €1,650 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed Deepstack Starts at 3 p.m.

Theodore McQuilkin, 2017 WSOPE Event #4 Winner
Theodore McQuilkin, 2017 WSOPE Event #4 Winner

With THE COLOSSUS in full swing, the 2018 World Series of Poker Europe is now fully underway. While that event will play out over the next two days, players in King's Casino in Rozvadov get a second crack at a coveted WSOP bracelet today . At 3 p.m. local time, cards will be in the air for Event #2: €1,650 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed Deepstack, the second of ten bracelet events.

Last year, Theodore McQuilkin reigned supreme and stood tall over a 240-player field to win €88,043 as well as his first gold bracelet. The Frenchman defeated a final table that contained the likes of Jan Bednář, Anthony Zinno, Ognjen Šekularac, and Andrej Desset. "It's awesome," McQuilkin said last year after his victory. "I'm not a poker professional at all but I love playing poker. It's a real passion." The Frenchman has been spotted in Rozvadov, where the WSOPE is off to a booming start as the hefty 1M Guarantee in the COLOSSUS has been crushed already.

The €1,650 6-Max comes with a €200,000 guarantee and will be played out over the course of three days. Each player receives 30,000 in chips and Day 1 will feature 14 levels of 40 minutes each before chips are bagged for the night. Late registration will be open for the first twelve levels (~1 a.m.) and a single re-entry is allowed. The winner will be decided on Tuesday, October 16. Like all other bracelet events, PokerNews will be on the floor start-to-finish to cover all the action, so make sure to check back regularly for the latest updates.
