Tahkokallio Busts Like Gentleman

Ilari Tahkokallio, Barry Greenstein & Phil Ivey
Ilari Tahkokallio, Barry Greenstein & Phil Ivey

Ilari Tahkokallio, who if you remember made a most gentlemanly decision immediately following the armed robbery back at EPT Berlin, got his last in on a {j-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{3-Spades} flop and discovered that his queens were no good against Jeff Madsen's set of nines.

Tahkokallio: {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{a-Spades}{5-Hearts}
Madsen: {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{2-Hearts}

Turn: {k-Hearts}

River: {a-Clubs}

"I folded top set," said tablemate Dan Shak. "No, wait, I folded top two."

Whatever Shak folded, it was irrelevant as he had folded it. Tahkokallio shook hands as he left like the gentleman we have already established he is, and Madsen moved up to 58,000.

Phil Ivey Multitasks

Moving all in for 6,600 from the small blind on a flop of {J-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} into two opponents (one of them the preflop raiser), Phil Ivey barely looked round from the game of Chinese he appears to be playing on his side table with Gus Hansen as Steve Jelinek gave him a sweat before passing, which turned out to be the longest one he got. Appearing supremely uninterested in the tournament at hand, Mr. Ivey is still capable of picking his spots, apparently.

Bust to Tweet

Huck Seed just started a Twitter account (huckleberryseed) a few days ago and is still in the enthusiastic stage of tweeting. He's actually sat next to me right now entering a new Tweet. If he's Tweeting though he can't be playing, right? That's right and his latest Tweet refers to his exit.

In the words of Huck Seed "As Ts 3d flop i had three tens, a flush draw and gutshot for justin"

The Justin mentioned is Justin Smith who must've got there.

Tall Man Grabs Big Stack

Karl Mahrenholz is a man who towers over six feet in height (sorry Americans, I don't know metric height measurements) so he normally looks a bit silly with a short stack. He fear not right now as a double-up has seen him rise to the top with over 90,000.

Jan Jochtmann raised from the cut-off and was only called by the Brit to go to a {a-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{q-Hearts} flop where the fireworks really went off. Jochtmann check-raised Mahrenholz's 2,000 bet to 7,000 before facing a raise to 24,000. His response was to move all-in and Mahrenholz called all-in for 46,000. Showdown:

Jochtmann: {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{7-Spades} for top two-pair and nut flush draw.
Seed: {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{4-Spades} for top set.

Mahrenholz seemed to hold his breath but he was soon able to exale as he faded all the outs through the {k-Diamonds} turn and {9-Clubs} river.

Stein No Mug

Meanwhile all-day big stack and by far the best evader of Death at the Table Of Death Samuel Stein looks to have just about broken the magical 100,000 mark. It looks as though a lot of players at his table have taken hits so it's rather difficult to pinpoint exactly where they came from, although former chip leader Frank Kassela has taken a particularly bad knock and is down to 35,000 from almost 60,000 a couple hours ago.

Cunningham <10k

Allen Cunningham
Allen Cunningham

Another hand failed to go Allen Cunningham's way just now, and although just a few thousand went to Alfonso Amendola it represented a quarter of his stack. Cunningham raised to 1,100 preflop and Amendola made the call. On the {Q-Spades}{A-Spades}{10-Spades} flop, Cunningham check-called a 2k bet. Both players checked the {K-Clubs} turn, and when Cunningham checked the {9-Clubs} river it appeared Amendola was happy to show down his flopped straight without any further confrontation. Cunningham was shown {K-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{2-Clubs} and mucked without comment or expression.

Ivey Watch

That's Mr. Ivey to you
That's Mr. Ivey to you

Yup, he's still hovering on around 10,000 and as the blinds go up, that stack becomes proportionately smaller. In fact Ivey appears to have lost interest in this tournament and is now playing Chinese poker with Gus Hansen who has commandeered a dealer's chair and pulled it up next to Mr. Ivey (you can do that sort of thing if you're Gus Hansen apparently). We do not know whether Ivey is faring any better at the Chinese than at the Omaha.

No Friends Down Here

Rory Mathews made few friends when he was sat upstairs and he's making no new friends now that he's sat downstairs. This has nothing to do with his attitude and he's a very well brought up young man from Edinburgh. It has all to do with pressurizing his opponents off hands.

The first player to fold was Justin Smith who folded to a river after Mathews had barreled both turn and river. The next person to begrudgingly let one go was a short-stack Huck Seed. He raised to 1,000 from the button and then called a three-bet from the Scot in the BB. The flop came {j-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} and Mathews looked like he wanted to bet but just checked as did Seed. The turn came {7-Spades} and Mathews bet 7,000 which covered Seed. Seed folded to hand the pot and a stack now worth 56,000 to Mathews.

Like a Magic Lamb, Boatman Makes a Lucky Chop

Holding a stack which was in definite need of a quick double up, Barny Boatman found a spot to get it in preflop in an open spot, only to find also-fairly-short Allen Cunningham right next to him giving him a spin for about half his own 10k stack.

Boatman: {Q-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{6-Spades}
Cunningham: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{10-Clubs}

Flop: {9-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{5-Clubs}
Turn: {8-Clubs}
River: {10-Spades} giving the both of them the Queen-high straight and keeping Boatman in the tournament.

"I'm happy with that," he admitted.
