Rio's $350 Million Renovation
The Rio Hotel & Casino is well known to PokerNews readers as the home of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) from 2005 to 2021. Caesars sold the Rio to Dreamscape Companies for $516 million in December 2019, with the new owner embarking on a $350 million renovation.
Part of the renovations included remodeling 1,500 suite-sized rooms in the Ipanema Tower, building a modern food hall, and an updated casino floor boasting almost 500 new slots, an electronic gaming area, a William Hill sportsbook, and new table games.
Earlier this month, Rio opened the Dragon Lair gaming room, which is dedicated to Aristocrat Gaming's Dragon Link and Phoenix Link slots. The room is located in the space formerly used as the poker room.
There are 15,000 Dragon Link machines in North America alone. All are linked, and that sees their progressive jackpots rise to astronomical amounts.
On October 14, a Las Vegas local was playing $50 spins on a Dragon Link slot at ARIA Resort & Casino. They triggered the Grand jackpot and got their hands on $5,066,400.83, marking the first time someone had won the full $5 million top prize.
