On Monday, May 11, professional poker player Vanessa Selbst appeared on the Steve Harvey Show's Female Ground Breakers episode, marking yet another high-profile appearance by one of the most successful female players — and overall players for that matter — in the poker world today.
The three-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner sat down with Steve Harvey for a friendly game of no-limit Texas hold'em, during which Selbst gave Harvey, and the viewers at home, some tips on how to play.
"I'm the one dealing, so that means I have position," said Selbst. "Do you know what that is?"
"Well, not in cards," Harvey joked.
"I'm trying to have a poker face here, you're making it really hard," Selbst said with a chuckle.
In the first hand they played, Selbst raised to 300 and Harvey called to see a flop. Harvey, who was first to act, bet 500, and Selbst explained the power of position before making the call. When the appeared on the turn, Harvey used two hands to shove his entire stack, which was quite substantial, into the pot.
Selbst was taken aback, and after explaining the situation, which were intermingled with some jokes from Harvey, she folded her hand. Harvey showed the for jacks and sixes. The two played another hand, which Selbst also lost, before their eight-minute segment came to an end.
"Let me tell you something, as a female ground breaker... when you get to No. 1 in the poker ratings, out of 300 poker players, listen to me, you have got to know what you are doing," Harvey told the audience. "I don't care how long you keep that ranking at No. 1, the majority of poker players have never been No. 1, nor will they ever be No. 1. So I think ladies, you're looking at one of the true champs right here."
The audience seems to agree as they gave Selbst a nice round of applause.
