Leonard Maue

For the latest GTO Wizard hand review, we're heading to the Triton Super High Roller Series that took place in Montenegro recently.

Action comes from Event #1 on the opening day of the festival, with 76 players remaining from a field of 89 in the $25,000 NLH Golden Decade.

Leonard Maue gets involved in a multiway pot and ends up calling Klemens Roiter's river raise. But was it GTO approved?

The Hand

All three players had comfortable stacks with the blinds at 2,000/4,000:

  • Leonard Maue (UTG+1): 339K (85bb)
  • Elias Gutierrez (CO): 328K (82bb)
  • Klemens Roiter (BB): 563K (141bb)

Leonard Maue opens to 8,000 from UTG+1 holding AK. Elias Gutierrez calls in the cutoff with 1010. Klemens Roiter defends the big blind with Q6.

The flop came AJ10. Roiter checks to Maue who continues for 6,000. Gutierrez calls and Roiter folds.

The turn was the 5. With 42,000 in the middle, Maue bets 13,000 and Gutierrez calls again.

The river was the J. Maue bets 25,000 into a pot of 68,000. Gutierrez responds with a raise to 135,000. Maue goes deep into the tank before eventually making the call.
Gutierrez tables his full house, and Maue mucks his hand. Gutierrez takes down the 338,000 pot.

This is a fascinating multiway spot that would previously have been extremely difficult to solve due to the deep stack depths and multiple players involved in the hand. However, with GTO Wizard’s new multiway AI solver, we can now analyze spots like this in seconds and see what the optimal strategies look like for all players involved.

Pre-flop Analysis

Maue's original open to 8,000 from UTG+1 holding AK is GTO approved.

UTG+1 Opening Range

Opening Ace-King suited here from UTG+1 is standard, with all suited Ax combos also being opened from this position.

Elias Gutierrez calls in the CO with 1010. Also GTO approved.

CO range vs open

The solver mixes between calling and 3-betting with 10x10x, as both options generate a very similar EV.

Klemens Roiter defends the big blind with Q6, which is a pure call. GTO approved.

BB defending Range pre

Post-flop Analysis

The big blind is a pure check on the AJ10 flop holding Q6

BB flop strategy

Maue's 6,000 continuation bet with AK is also GTO approved.

UTG+1 Flop Strategy

The solver mixes between checking and using a small bet with AKs.

Recommended Strategy and EV for AKs:

AK EV on the flop

With AK, the solver recommends either checking or using the small 20% sizing that Maue chose in game.
Gutierrez calls the 6,000 bet with 1010

CO flop strategy vs cbet

Recommended Strategy and EV for TT:

TT EV on the flop

The solver recommends a fairly high raising frequency here, even with a capped preflop range. This is because the board connects well with the CO flatting range, while also allowing the CO to realise equity more effectively when playing in position vs both players.

Roiter folds to the 6,000. GTO approved .

BB flop strategy vs cbet and

Even a hand with a gut shot and backdoor flush draw like Q6 is too weak to call here vs this action.

Recommended Strategy and EV for Q6s:

Q6s EV on the flop vs cbet

All Q6s combos are -EV calls in this spot.

With the 5 on the turn, Maue bets 13,000. This is also GTO approved as you can see below.

UTG+1 turn strategy

Recommended Strategy and EV for AKs:

AKs EV on the turn

With AK, the solver mostly prefers checking or using the 30% sizing that Maue chose in game. However, you can also see that the solver mixes in the 150% geometric sizing with certain hands.

What is a geometric bet size?
A geometric bet size is one where you bet a consistent percentage of the pot on each street so that stacks end up effectively going all-in on the river. This approach is optimal when your range is perfectly polarized, as it maximizes minimum defense frequency (MDF) while ensuring that the full stacks are committed by the river.

Gutierrez calls the 13,000 turn bet with 1010 — GTO approved.

CO turn strategy vs bet

Recommended Strategy and EV for TT:

TT EV on the turn

All pocket tens combos mostly prefer calling vs this turn sizing, with 1010 specifically generating the highest EV as a call.

The J pairs the board on the river, and Maue bets 25,000. This is GTO approved.

UTG+1 river strategy

Recommended Strategy and EV for AKs:

AKs EV on the river

The solver actually prefers using a 25% block-bet sizing on the river over the 37% size that Maue used in game. However, betting AK for 37% still generated more EV overall than either checking or using the 100% sizing.

With a full house, Gutierrez raises the 25,000 river bet to 135,000. This raise is also GTO approved.

CO river strategy

Recommended Strategy and EV for TT:

TT EV on the river

Pocket tens is a pure raise vs this river sizing, with the 20bb raise generating slightly higher EV than the 33.75bb size Gutierrez used in game with 1010

Maue calls the 135,000 raise with AK, the first misstep from the German in this hand.

UTG+1 river strategy vs raise

Recommended Strategy and EV for AKs:

AKs EV on the river vs raise

Unfortunately for Maue, his hand is a fold on the river vs this raise size. You can see that the other two AKs combos are profitable calls, as they do not block the missed flush draws.

Overall, it is very difficult for the CO to find enough natural bluffs in this spot, meaning some missed flush draws need to be used in order to properly balance the value range and avoid becoming exploitable.

This is why calling with AK is -EV here, while the other AKs combos remain profitable calls.

Main Takeaways

  • All suited Ax combos are opens preflop from UTG+1 in this spot.
  • Multiway from the big blind, you can still defend all suited combos by calling vs an open with these stacks.
  • On an AJ10 flop, the preflop raiser mostly wants to use a 20% c-bet sizing multiway, even at 80bb effective.
  • Vs a 20% c-bet, the CO can adopt an aggressive raising strategy in position, due to connecting well with this board while also benefiting from the positional advantage.
  • On a 5 turn, the preflop raiser wants to use a polarised betting strategy, betting both the top and bottom of range using a mix of small and large sizings, while mostly checking the middle of range.
  • On an AJ105J river, AK mostly wants to value bet using a 25% block sizing, but then fold vs a large raise from the CO.
  • On an AJ105J river, 1010 is a pure raise even vs a 37% bet size, with the solver mostly preferring the 20bb raise sizing for value.
