Chan Still Scrapping

Johnny "Effin'" Chan
Johnny "Effin'" Chan
Don't count out Johnny Chan yet. He limp-shoved after Xuan Nguyen raised from the cutoff. Nguyen called with pocket tens, but Chan turned over pocket jacks. Both players missed the board entirely, coming as it did {7-Hearts} {A-Diamonds} {5-Clubs} {Q-Spades} {5-Spades}. Chan's two pair, jacks and fives, were just slightly better than Nguyen's tens and fives. Since there's no prize for second place, the whole pot was shipped to Chan. He now has 52,000.

Powell Can't Beat Ace High

Julian Powell raised from the cutoff to 2,700 and David Steicke made the call on the button. The two took a flop of {8-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} and both players checked.

The turn brought the {6-Spades} and Powell fired out 4,000. Steicke made the call.

The river was the {9-Spades} and both players checked again. Steicke confidently flipped over {A-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} for just ace high, but again his read was good as Powell tossed his cards into the muck.

Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!

David Steicke opened with a raise to 3,000 from early position with Joe Hachem and Andrew Scott making the call. Van Marcus then popped it up to 23,000 from the small blind, forcing a fold from the table.

"Ten more and you'd have seen a flop right?" said Marcus to Steicke.

"Yeh I'd have a crack!" laughed Steicke.

"That's exactly why I made it 20,000!" replied Marcus and the table started laughing.

There are five Australians on that table, with a couple more on the other two tables, and the players started talking about the possibility of an all-Australian final table!

"To have all Aussies on the final table is on target isn't it Chucky!?!" quipped Eric Assadourian.

Just Do It

Quinn Do
Quinn Do
Someone get on the horn to David Steicke. He's in danger of losing his chip lead to Quinn Do. Do made it 3,000 to go preflop and was called by Johnny Chan. Both players checked the flop when it came down {5-Spades} {A-Hearts} {7-Clubs}. Do made a pot-sized feeler bet on the tun {Q-Spades}, a bet that Chan decided to call. When the river fell {3-Clubs}, Do came out for 11,000. Chan made the call but couldn't top the set of fives that Do made with {5-Diamonds} {5-Clubs}.

That pot pushed Do's stack to 143,000, just a few thousand off chip leader David Steicke.

"He's Just a Machine!"

David "The Machine" Steicke continues to hold sway over his opponents. He made it 3,000 to go preflop and was called by Danny Wong and Andrew Scott, both of whom had position on Steicke. That didn't deter Steicke from betting the {K-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds} {4-Spades} flop for 3,500. Only Wong called.

Steicke made it 4,500 to go when the turn fell {7-Spades}. Again Wong called. When the river came {8-Clubs} and Steicke made it 5,500, Wong finally relented and folded his hand.

"He's just a machine!" said Joe Hachem after the hand was over. "David 'The Machine' Steicke. It's going to stick. You might be my new hero."

Assadourian Eliminates Another

Saehoon Lee was all in preflop for his last chips with {7-Spades}{7-Clubs} to have a slight advantage over the {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts} of Eric Assadourian.

That is, until the board landed {Q-Spades}{3-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{A-Hearts} to give Assadourian aces and kings, to end the day for Lee.

The defending champion is looking good to reach another final table as he now sits with 109,000 chips.

Greenstein Eliminated

No king on the river for Greenstein
No king on the river for Greenstein
One of the good guys is out. Barry Greenstein shoved over the top of a raise from Quinn Do for 25,000. Do made the call with {A-Spades} {J-Hearts}. He needed to duck Greenstein's {K-Spades} {9-Spades}. The flop was seven-high with three suits. Do caught the {J-Diamonds} on the turn, reducing Greenstein to only three remaining kings that would give him the winner. The river was not a king -- it was the {6-Hearts}.

Assadourian Avoids Set

Eric Assadourian raised to 2,500 from the cutoff and Andrew Pantling made the call in the big blind.

They saw a flop of {J-Spades}{3-Clubs}{2-Spades} and Pantling checked to Assadourian who fired 4,500. Pantling check-raised to 12,000 sending Assadourian deep into the tank. He eventually found a fold as Pantling flashed {2-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} for a set!

"You couldn't have a pair?" jabbed Pantling.

"Actually I had nines!" replied Assadourian as he was relieved to get away cheaply.

Chan's Draw Doesn't Come In

Johnny Chan
Johnny Chan
Johnny Chan is making a spirited fight in the High Rollers Event as he tries to reach the final table and the money. Sitting in the small blind, he called a raise by Xuan Nguyen to 2,900, then checked a flop of {8-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds} {8-Hearts}. Nguyen made it 6,000 to go, but Chan wasn't messing around. He put his whole stack in the middle, an effective bet of 21,000 back to Nguyen. Nguyen made the call and the cards were opened:

Chan: {K-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds}
Nguyen: {J-Clubs} {K-Clubs}

Both players showed suited kings that had connected with the flop. Nguyen made top pair while Chan had an overcard and a flush draw. He lost all of those outs when the turn came {J-Hearts} to make a full house for Nguyen. The river was the {5-Clubs}.

Chan still has 50,000 chips. Nguyen doubled to 65,000.
