Another day of action from Sydney has wrapped up here at the Star City Hotel & Casino for the 2010 PokerStars.net APPT Grand Final.
Today's field only drew 68 players. That's down from yesterday's 75 and not really the type of field you'd expect to see for the Grand Final given the big numbers it's put up in the past years. Last year, 109 players came out for Day 1b. Knowing that makes the number from today seem even smaller.
Joining action today were former APPT Sydney champions Grant Levy and Martin Rowe. Former APPT Macau champion Eddy Sabat was also in the field today. The biggest name though belonged to a member of Team PokerStars Pro. That player was none other than world champion Daniel Negreanu. He's not the only WSOP bracelet winner that played because newly minted bracelet winner Simon Watt also played. Negreanu wrapped up the day with 57,400 and Watt with 59,200. Here's a few of the other notables counts at the end of the day.
Player | Chips |
---|---|
Daniel Neilson | 164,100 |
Aaron Tran | 147,200 |
Grant Levy | 92,900 |
Jay Kinkade | 82,500 |
Eddy Sabat | 79,200 |
Andrew Hinrichsen | 64,000 |
Brendon Rubie | 46,700 |
Martin Rowe | 24,100 |
Leading the way is Daniel Neilson as you can see by the counts above. He had a great day on the felt as did Aaron Tran, who finished up in second place on the leader board. At the end of the day, 39 players remained who will be moving on to Day 2.
The final start day, Day 1c, kicks off tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. local time. It should easily be the largest of the starting days and should include the Hachem brothers, Tony and Joe, Chris Moneymaker, Jeff Lisandro, Tyron Krost, James Obst and Jarred Graham. It's going to be another great day of poker and you can bet that PokerNews will be bringing you all of the action from the floor! We'll see you then.
Stewart Scott found himself all in for his last 16,300 on the last hand of the night against Sean Dunwoodie.
Scott:
Dunwoodie:
"Just a king and a jack please!" asked Dunwoodie.
The dealer delivered with a flop, and when the landed on the turn, Dunwoodie completed his straight.
Fortunately for Scott, the river landed the to see the pot chopped up.
Tournament Director Jason Wicks has just announced that there will be three more hands for the evening.
From under the gun, Brendon Rubie raised to 1,800. One player called in middle position and then Eddy Sabat reraised to 7,200 from the small blind. Rubie moved all in for 21,600 and the flat caller in middle position folded. Sabat thought for a minute or two and then made the call.
Rubie tabled the and Sabat tabled the . Much of the table and a couple of the onlookers took this as a slowroll, claiming Sabat should have called a lot quicker. Sabat didn't mean to slowroll and apologized if people felt he did. He said that he really didn't think his hand was good.
The board ran out and Sabat said, "Guess I get what I deserved," as he sent over the chips to Rubie, who's back to about 46,000 now. Sabat dropped to 68,000 and change.
Andrew Hinrichsen opened to 1,800 from under the gun and Daniel Negreanu called along with the big blind.
The flop was checked through to see the land on the turn and Hinrichsen follow a check from the big blind with a bet of 3,600. Negreanu made the call as the big blind folded before the dealer dropped the on the river.
Once both players checked, Hinrichsen stated, "I win!" and tabled his .
"You do, you do!" added Negreanu as he kicked his cards to the muck while slipping to 58,000. Hinrichsen on the other hand is now up to just below 90,000 in chips.
Facing a raise under the gun to 2,000, Haibo Chu made the call to see a flop fall.
Chu took the stop-n-go play out of the playbook and open-shoved his last 8,600, only to be snap-called by his opponent.

The turn and river of the and would ensure Chu found himself on the rail just a few orbits shy of a day two berth.
Haibo Chu opened to 2,000 from middle position and was flat-called by one player before Martin Kozlov moved all in for his last 9,000.
With the action on Grant Levy in the big blind, he slid in a raise amounting to 50,800 to force both Chu and the second player's cards into the muck.
Kozlov:
Levy:
The board ran out to see the ANZPT Melbourne Champion Kozlov unable to improve and be forced to the rail, while Levy climbs to 100,000 in chips.
2009 Aussie Millions winner Stewart Scott raised to 2,000 and Aaron Tran made the call. The player on the button called as well to see the flop come . Scott lead with a bet of 3,000. Tran min-raised to 6,000. The button folded and Scott folded, giving Tran the pot.
Tran's still leading the way with about 145,000 as we move closer towards the end of the day. Scott was left with 14,000 after the hand.
