Marcus Regains Chips

Omaha Hi/Lo:

On the last hand of Omaha Hi/Lo, Van Marcus was able to recover enough chips to restore his stack to its level at the start of heads-up play. He called Jarred Solomon's preflop raise to a flop of {A-Hearts} {A-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds}. Both players checked. Marcus checked again when the turn fell {2-Spades}, then check-raised after Solomon bet. Solomon called to see the {6-Hearts} fall on the river. He folded to a bet from Marcus at that point.

Marcus now has 174,000 chips. Solomon has 414,000.

First Two Pots to Solomon

Van Marcus may be wondering what it will take to win.

Omaha Hi/Lo:

Things are looking good for Jarred Solomon in the early going. He's taken two pots off Van Marcus in Omaha Hi/Lo without going to showdown. Marcus folded to a turn bet on a board of {A-Hearts} {2-Hearts} {Q-Clubs} {A-Diamonds} in the first hand, and a turn bet on a board of {A-Clubs} {9-Clubs} {J-Spades} {K-Clubs} in the second hand. He's down to 114,000 in chips.

A Quick Break

Players have been sent on a short break before we begin heads up play. When we come back, Jarred Solomon will sit down behind 414,000 chips. Van Marcus will have 174,000.

Kerry Stead Eliminated in 3rd Place (AU$15,190)

Kerry Stead
Kerry Stead
Omaha Hi/Lo:

Kerry Stead fought valiantly at the end, but the limits were just too big for his stack. He raised from the small blind after Van Marcus limped in on the button. Marcus made the call after Jarred Solomon called from the big blind.

Stead led out on a flop of {8-Hearts} {10-Hearts} {9-Hearts}. Solomon was the only caller. On the turn {6-Clubs} Stead led out a second time, then called all in once Solomon raised him.

Stead: {A-Clubs} {J-Diamonds} {10-Spades} {4-Diamonds}
Solomon: {A-Spades} {3-Spades} {9-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds}

It wasn't over for Stead -- although he was behind for low and for high, he had outs to either half of the pot. Unfortunately, the {2-Spades} the hit the river was not one of those outs. Solomon took the low with {A-Spades} {3-Spades} and took the high with a ten-high straight. Stead left to scattered applause. He earned AU$15,190.

Stead Doubles Up Again

Hold'em:

Kerry Stead quickly lost the chips earned from his last double up. After Jarred Solomon raised the button, Stead three-bet all in from the big blind. Solomon called with {K-Hearts} {4-Diamonds} and was in the lead against Stead's {9-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds}. Neither player improved on a flop of {3-Hearts} {3-Spades} {Q-Spades}. Solomon and Van Marcus let out a disappointed sigh in unison when the turn came {9-Spades} to make a pair of nines for Stead. They held after the river fell {4-Spades}.

Stead remains in the tournament -- just barely -- with 63,000 chips.

Stead Doubles Up

Hold'em:

Kerry Stead has delayed the onset of heads-up play. He opened from the button to 20,000 and was called by Van Marcus from the big blind. The rest of Stead's chips were in the middle after the dealer burned and turned a flop of {A-Hearts} {Q-Clubs} {7-Diamonds}. Marcus made the call:

Marcus: {10-Clubs} {9-Diamonds}
Stead: {3-Spades} {3-Diamonds}

The repeat {7-Clubs} on the turn gave Marcus numerous ways to win the hand and knock Stead out. He was disappointed to see the river fall {2-Clubs}, allowing Stead to double up to 59,000.

Michael Guzzardi Eliminated in 4th Place (AU$10,290)

Michael Guzzardi - 4th Place
Michael Guzzardi - 4th Place
Stud Hi/Lo:

Michael Guzzardi got a stay of execution for one hand. He brought it in the very first hand after Van Marcus crippled him. Action folded to Marcus.

"Say please fold and I will," Marcus told Guzzardi. "Otherwise I'll put you all in."

"Please put me all in," replied Guzzardi. Marcus thought it over but folded.

The next hand, however, Guzzardi would get no such favors. He brought it in again and wound up all in against Jarred Solomon. Neither player made a qualifying low. Solomon took the whole pot by rivering a pair of fours against Guzzardi, who finished the hand with {A-Diamonds} {J-Spades} / {4-Diamonds} {K-Clubs} {9-Clubs} {3-Spades} / {10-Clubs}.

This was Guzzardi's second final table of the 2009 Aussie Millions Poker Championships. His fourth-place finish today earned him a payday of AU$10,290.

Guzzardi Crippled

Stud Hi/Lo:

The game can't switch to hold'em fast enough for Michael Guzzardi. He called Van Marcus all the way to the river, with Marcus' board coming x-x / {8-Hearts} {4-Hearts} {Q-Hearts} {2-Clubs} / x against Guzzardi's x-x / {2-Diamonds} {6-Clubs} {9-Hearts} {10-Diamonds} / x. Marcus, noting that Guzzardi had only 14,000 chips remaining at the river, bet the river dark. Guzzardi squeezed, sighed disgustedly, then folded. Marcus showed {Q-Clubs} {7-Hearts} {5-Diamonds} in the hole anyway for a made low and a pair of queens.

Guzzardi is crippled and most likely next to go out.
