Chidwick & Rast Tie for Chip Lead Among 18 Survivors

Level 8 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Stephen Chidwick & Brian Rast
Stephen Chidwick & Brian Rast

While the 2016 Aussie Millions Main Event kicked of on one side of the Crown Melbourne poker room, Day 1 of the prestigious $100,000 Challenge took place on the other. The first day of play attracted 29 players who accounted for eight reentries, which brought the total field up to 37 – down for last year's 70 entries.

However, late registration and reentries are open through the end of Level 9 on Day 2, so that number is sure to grow. As for Day 1 action, which encompassed eight one-hour levels, two players thrived in Stephen Chidwick and Brian Rast, who tied of the chip lead with 378,500 among the 18 survivors.

Others who bagged big were Connor Drinan (372,000), Jeff Rossiter (297,000), and Fabain Quoss (235,000).

The day started off rough for online pro Ben Tollerene, who lost a big pot to Phil Ivey early on and failed to recover. Tollerene was the first player to fall, but he promptly reentered and ended up bagging a healthy 275,500.

One player who did survive Antonio Esfandiari, who had a short and not at all sweet stay after he bluffed away his stack in Level 3. Esfandiari did not return. Others who had a rough go were Andrew Lichtenberger, who busted two bullets, and Ivey, who fell in the last level of the night after a big flush-over-flush hand.

Meanwhile, Russia's all-time money winner Igor Kurganov, who finished runner-up in the $25K Challenge the night before for AU$541,680, ended up firing four times. Nothing went right in the first three, but the fourth got him through Day 1 with 120,500.

Day 2 will commence at 2:00 p.m. local time on Monday with the plan of playing down to the final table. Late registration will remain open for the first level of the day, and chance are Ivey and some other fallen players will take another crack at the title. Stay tuned to PokerNews as we bring you all the latest and greatest from the 2016 Aussie Millions Poker Championships.

Juanda Sent Packing

Level 8 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
John Juanda
John Juanda

John Juanda opened the button and Sam Greenwood made the call from the small blind. The flop came {2-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{K-Hearts} and Greenwood checked. Juanda made a bet of 9,000 and Greenwood tossed in a big chip while announcing to make it 24,000.

Juanda thought about it for just 20 seconds or so and shoved all in for 79,600. Greenwood called immediately.

John Juanda: {K-Spades}{10-Clubs}
Sam Greenwood: {K-Clubs}{J-Spades}

The {5-Diamonds} on the turn and {4-Clubs} on the river couldn't save Juanda and he made his exit with just 15 minutes of play left for the day.

Flush Over Flush Sends Ivey Out the Door

Level 8 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

Phil Ivey got off to a hot start in this tournament, but he cooled off as things dragged on.

In what would be his last hand — at least on his first bullet — Ivey called from the button after Jeff Rossiter had raised from the hijack and Fedor Holz flatted the cutoff. Both blinds folded, the flop came down {10-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}, and Rossiter led out for 14,500.

Holz folded, Ivey called, and the dealer burned and turned the {Q-Hearts}. Rossiter bet 32,000, Ivey called, and the {2-Hearts} completed the board on the river. Rossiter proceeded to move all in and Ivey wasted little time in dropping in his last 91,000. Rossiter rolled over the {k-Hearts}{j-Hearts} for a runner-runner flush, and Ivey flinched before showing a flush of his own, albeit an inferior one with the {6-Hearts}{4-Hearts}.

Ivey didn't appear to be interested in reentering tonight, but something tells us he'll take another crack at it tomorrow.

Lichtenberger Busts His Second Bullet

Level 8 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Andrew Lichtenberger
Andrew Lichtenberger

Up at the feature table, action folded to Andrew Lichtenberger on the button and he raised to 5,600. Connor Drinan responded by three-betting to 15,000 from the small blind, and after Steve O'Dwyer folded from the big, Lichtenberger jammed for 76,400 total. Drinan snap-called.

Drinan: {a-Spades}{q-Spades}
Lichtenberger: {a-}{j-}

Lichtenberger had a big kicker problem, and it failed to get resolved on the {7-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} flop. The {8-Hearts} turn gave Lichtenberger a flush draw, but it failed to come in as the {2-Spades} blanked on the river.

Rast Eliminates Urbanovich

Level 7 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Dzmitry Urbanovich
Dzmitry Urbanovich

Brian Rast raised to 5,500 from the hijack and Dzmitry Urbanovich in the cutoff right next to him shoved all in for 48,100. The button and both blinds folded and the decision was back on Rast. Rast asked the dealer to pull in the 5,500 from Urbanovich' all in, and called as soon as he found out it was 42,600 for him to call.

Dzmitry Urbanovich: {A-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Brian Rast: {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts}

The {K-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} flop wasn't a good one for Urbanovich but the {9-Clubs} on the turn gave him a bunch of new outs. The {10-Spades} on the river wasn't one of the cards he was looking for though, and Urbanovich made his exit.

Seidel Bests a Not-So-Lucky Chewy

Level 6 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Andrew Lichtenberger
Andrew Lichtenberger

With around 40,000 in the pot and a flop of {2-Spades}{10-Clubs}{k-Spades}, a raising way saw Andrew Lichtenberger get his stack of 127,900 all in and at risk against Erik Seidel, who barely had him covered with 129,600.

Lichtenberger: {q-Spades}{9-Spades}
Seidel: {k-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}

Seidel was ahead with two pair, but Lichtenberger had both straight and flush draws. Unfortunately for him, neither the {7-Clubs} turn nor {3-Hearts} river was what he needed and he was sent to the rail.

Ivey Wins Huge Pot Up at Feature Table

Level 5 : 700/1,400, 200 ante
Dario Sammartino
Dario Sammartino

Up on the feature table, there was 34,300 in the pot and a board reading {8-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{7-Clubs} when Dario Sammartino bet 18,000 from the big blind with the {j-Spades}{9-Spades} straight and Phil Ivey called from the button.

When the {7-Spades} completed the board on the river, Sammartino checked and Ivey moved all in for 135,000. Sammartino didn't seem pleased, used a time extension, and eventually called.

Ivey rolled over the {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} for a full house, and Sammartino watched the massive 341,000 pot pushed to his opponent.

Antonio Esfandiari Bluffs It All

Level 3 : 500/1,000, 0 ante
Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

In the last hand before the break it was Martin Jacobson who opened under the gun. His next door neighbor, Antonio Esfandiari, made the call, and so did Stephen Chidwick (button) and Marcelo Manfredini (big blind).

The flop came {8-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}, and Manfredini checked to the initial raiser. Jacobson checked as well, and action was on Esfandiari. Esfandiari made a bet of 3,000, and Chidwick quickly released. Manfredini made the call, and Jacobson folded after giving it some thought.

The {7-Diamonds} hit the turn, and Manfredini checked again. Esfandiari seemed determined and made a bet of 5,300. Manfredini wasted no time (or time breaker chips for that matter) and called.

The {3-Hearts} completed the board, and Manfredini checked a third time. Esfandiari shoved all in for his last 30,000, and Manfredini glanced over his glasses before casually making the call.

Esfandiari tabled the {A-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} and Manfredini revealed his {7-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} for the winner. Esfandiari was out, but he has the option to buy back in of course.

Ivey Out to the Early Lead After Winning Big Pot of Tollerene

Level 1 : 200/400, 0 ante
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

Phil Ivey is off to a red-hot start here in the $100,000 Challenge!

In a recent hand, Ben Tollerene raised to 900 from the cutoff and Ivey responded by three-betting to 3,000 from the button. The blinds both folded, Tollerene called, and it was heads-up action to the {4-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} flop. Tollerene check-called a bet of 4,000 and then checked for a second time on the {7-Spades} turn.

Ivey bet 11,000, Tollerene called, and the {8-Diamonds} completed the board on the river. Tollerene check yet again and Ivey tossed out a hefty bet of 25,000. Tollerene took his time, and as the shot clock neared its expiration he tossed in a single chip to indicate a call.

Ivey tabled the {6-Spades}{3-Spades} for a well-disguised straight, and Tollerene sent his hand to the muck.

The $100,000 Challenge Starts Today!

Richard Yong won last years AU$100,000 Challenge
Richard Yong won last years AU$100,000 Challenge

It's not only time for Day 1a of the Main Event today, if you have a AU$100,000 lying around somewhere, you may opt to register for the $100,000 Challenge, the second biggest tournament of the 2016 Aussie Millions poker Championships this week.

This is a three-day tournament with Day 1 starting at 2:10pm today, Day 2 tomorrow, and the final table at Saturday the 30th of January. As there are three starting days for the Main Event, you're guaranteed not to miss a day of any of these two tournaments - they won't overlap.

There's something special about this tournament, something not many tournaments have. The one-hour levels won't set it apart and the nine levels of late registration also aren't unheard of. The one thing that differs this tournament from most others, is that there's a shot clock in effect. Players have 30 seconds to act on their hand, otherwise their cards will be automatically mucked. Each player gets two so called time breaker buttons at the start of each day, which will be worth an additional minute of thinking time when tossed in. These time breaker buttons can't be accumulated through out the tournament, they are forfeited at the end of each day in case they haven't been used.

This tournament wil be live streamed on twitch, hosted by renowned poker caster Jason Somerville. Somerville and Crown Poker have announced that, not only for this event but for all live streamed events this week, hole cards will be shown on a 30-minute delay. The live streamed table will be randomly selected and switched every break. Live streaming of this event starts at 8pm local time, just under 6 hours into the tournament.

A total of 8 levels will be played on Day 1 today. (late) Registration is open for the duration of the entire day, and even extends until after the first level of play of Day 2. This tournament gives players the option to re-enter after busting, also available for everyone till the end of the first level of play on Day 2 (level 9) when blinds will be 2,000/4,000. Levels will be 60 minutes long for the entire tournament and players start with a stack worth 100,000 in chips. The first level will be 200/400 without an ante, meaning players get a 250 big blind stack to start with.

History
The Aussie Millions started the Super High Roller craze back in 2006. A total of 10 players ponied up the AU$100,000 buy in for the first super high roller of its kind that year. Phil Ivey, Tony G, Michael Sampoerna, Ralph Burd, Tony Bloom, Barry Greenstein, Mike Sexton, Jason Gray, and Jeff Lisandro all came up short that year, it was John Juanda that grabbed the title. Just 10 players entered that first year, but that number increased over the years. Last years winner Richard Yong beat out 69 other players to take the title, netting the rich poker savvy business man AU$1,870,000.
