Time to Up the Stakes; The 2019 Aussie Millions AU$100,000 Challenge is Here

Welcome back to the 2019 Aussie Millions for Day 1 of Event #20: AU$100,000 Challenge from Crown Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia.

The final high stakes tournament of the series is here and running simultaneously with the penultimate day of the Main Event where just 38 players remain and the final table of seven will be reached later this evening.

The AU$100,000 Challenge has a long history that dates back to 2006 when it was first run at the Aussie Millions as the Speed Poker Million Dollar Challenge. From there, the event evolved into what it is today, and some of the best players from around the World have tasted victory and walked away with million-dollar-plus scores.

Last year, Michael Lim captured victory after defeating Manig Loeser heads-up to capture the AU$931,000 first prize over the 19-entrant field. Although record fields have continually been set this Aussie Millions, it is unlikely the 76-entrant field set in 2014 will be broken this time round, but with several seats given away in a satellite last night, a decent size field is still expected.

Thomas Muehloecker (from AU$50K Challenge)
Thomas Muehloecker (from AU$50K Challenge)

On a flop of {6-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{2-Hearts} Tao Chen checked from the big blind. Thomas Muehloecker bet 3,500 from the cutoff. Chen called.

The turn brought the {q-Clubs} and Chen check-called another bet of 9,000 by Muehloecker.

The {8-Diamonds} completed the board and Chen opted to check for a third time. Muehloecker thought for a moment and bet 16,000. Chen then raised it up to 50,000. Muehloecker took a minute before making the call.

Chen instantly mucked his hand as he relinquished the pot to Muehloecker.

Level 2 : 700/1,400, 1,400 ante
Alex Foxen (earlier in the series)
Alex Foxen (earlier in the series)

Over 100,000 had already amassed in the middle of the table and the board showed {7-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{8-Clubs}{5-Spades}.

Alex Foxen checked from the small blind. Rainer Kempe then bet 40,000 from middle position. Foxen called.

The {q-Clubs} completed the board and Foxen checked. Kempe sat motionless for a minute before betting 194,700 and leaving a single 500-chip behind. It was then on Foxen, who thought for several minutes, before cutting out the call and sliding it forward.

Kempe didn't seem overly pleased before tabling {a-Spades}{10-Spades} for ace-high.

Foxen then revealed {q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for top pair and took down the monster pot.

From under the gun, Rainer Kempe tossed in his last 500 in chips and Dominik Nitsche raised to 3,000 in the cutoff. Michael Soyza and Michael Gu both called in the blinds, and the flop landed {5-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}.

Nitsche continued for 2,500, and only Soyza called before the {6-Clubs} checked through on the turn.

The river landed the {J-Hearts} and Soyza bet out 12,000 and Nitsche folded.

Burns Eliminated by Kempe

Level 4 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Kahle Burns
Kahle Burns

Kahle Burns was all in from the small blind for 68,500 against Rainer Kempe in the cutoff.

Kempe: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Burns: {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}

In a classic race situation, the {7-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} flop failed to connect for Burns apart from leaving him with runner-runner flush and straight outs.

The {Q-Diamonds} on the turn left Burns drawing to one of the final jacks in the deck, and when the {7-Diamonds} fell on the river, he was eliminated from the AU$100,000 Challenge.

Koray Aldemir

Koray Aldemir raised to 8,000 from middle position before Toby Lewis re-raised to 26,000 from the cutoff. Aldemir called.

The flop came {6-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{j-Clubs} and Aldemir checked. Lewis continued for 15,000. Aldemir raised to 40,000. Lewis called.

The turn brought the {10-Clubs} and Aldemir thought for a moment before checking his option. Lewis then moved all in for 115,500 which had Aldemir's stack of 96,000 covered. The bet was snap-called.

Koray Aldemir: {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Toby Lewis: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}

Aldemir had improved to two pair on the turn. Lewis had picked up additional outs to make a straight and flush of his own.

The {9-Hearts} on the river only improved Aldemir's hand to a flush which guaranteed him the pot.
