Day 1a Action

The first of three starting flights in the bestbet Jacksonville Spring Series opening event attracted 114 runners. Early in the day, Florida native Gil Levy cracked aces and used the hand as a catalyst to build a big stack throughout the day. Unfortunately for Levy, he couldn't survive to see Day 2 and fell during the last level of play.

Dumaplin built up his chip lead by applying aggression and getting hands, including when he had pocket kings against the pocket queens of an opponent. But Dumaplin couldn't be too aggressive as he had Jarvis, who was second in chips, seated to his left.

It would be the chip leader who would end the day as he got into a preflop confrontation with Mario Harper, who was all-in for his last 28,000. Harper had ace-king against the Cowboys of Dumaplin and was in bad shape until he paired his ace on the flop. But the case king came on the turn to launch Dumaplin ahead and the river wasn't the ace Harper needed.

Other players who didn't survive the day include Stephen Jufer, Brenda Miller, Mark Mcgarity and Pom Souvannasoth.

Action will pick back up with tomorrow's Day 1b, which will kick off at noon EST and follow the same structure as Day 1a. Surviving players from the three starting flights will fight it out on Day 2 on Sunday, April 24, which will feature a live-streamed final table.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be back tomorrow for the Day 1b action.

Dumaplin Eliminates Harper to End Day

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

Mario Harper was all-in preflop for 28,000 against chip leader Brian Dumaplin.

Mario Harper: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Brian Dumaplin: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}

Harper took the lead when the flop came {4-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} to pair his ace, but the turn brought the case {k-Diamonds} to give Dumaplin the lead with a set. Harper needed an ace on the river to stay alive and didn't get it as it came the {8-Diamonds}.

The clock has stopped and bags are out. Stay tuned for a recap of the Day 1a action.

Seven from Heaven Saves Jackson

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

Gloria Jackson three-bet shoved a stack of 46,000 and Brian Dumaplin called as the tournament chip leader.

Gloria Jackson: {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}
Brian Dumaplin: {j-Spades}{j-Hearts}

Jackson's pair was dominated and the flop of {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{9-Clubs} didn't help her. However, the turn brought the miracle {7-Spades} to give Jackson a set and the {3-Diamonds} on the river didn't change things to earn her a double-up.

Dumaplin Coolers Opponent to Take Chip Lead

Level 13 : 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante
Brian Dumaplin
Brian Dumaplin

Brian Dumaplin, who recently built up a stack, called the all-in of an opponent on a flop reading {8-Spades}{j-Hearts}{5-Clubs}.

Opponent: {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Brian Dumaplin: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

"What a setup!" someone at the table yelled upon seeing the holdings.

Dumaplin's kings held up as the board finished out {10-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} and he added to his stack as the opponent hit the rail. Dumaplin now has the chip lead with the second biggest stack, Eric Jarvis, to his direct left with around 300,000.

Burnat Fades a Five

Level 13 : 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante

Mariusz Burnat was all-in for around 20,000 against a single opponent.

Mariusz Burnat: {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}
Opponent: {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs}

Burnat was far ahead with queens and just needed to dodge a five after the {2-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{k-Clubs} flop. The {6-Diamonds} on the turn was a pip off and resembled a five on first glance, as did the {6-Hearts} on the river.

"Ooh! Close!" someone at the table yelled.
