The first of three starting flights in the bestbet Jacksonville Spring Series opening event attracted 114 runners. Early in the day, Florida native Gil Levy cracked aces and used the hand as a catalyst to build a big stack throughout the day. Unfortunately for Levy, he couldn't survive to see Day 2 and fell during the last level of play.
Dumaplin built up his chip lead by applying aggression and getting hands, including when he had pocket kings against the pocket queens of an opponent. But Dumaplin couldn't be too aggressive as he had Jarvis, who was second in chips, seated to his left.
It would be the chip leader who would end the day as he got into a preflop confrontation with Mario Harper, who was all-in for his last 28,000. Harper had ace-king against the Cowboys of Dumaplin and was in bad shape until he paired his ace on the flop. But the case king came on the turn to launch Dumaplin ahead and the river wasn't the ace Harper needed.
Other players who didn't survive the day include Stephen Jufer, Brenda Miller, Mark Mcgarity and Pom Souvannasoth.
Action will pick back up with tomorrow's Day 1b, which will kick off at noon EST and follow the same structure as Day 1a. Surviving players from the three starting flights will fight it out on Day 2 on Sunday, April 24, which will feature a live-streamed final table.
The PokerNews live reporting team will be back tomorrow for the Day 1b action.
