Day 1b Action

The second starting flight attracted 175 runners to make it significantly larger than yesterday's field of 114. With the extra players, it was no surprise that the day would drag on longer than Day 1a.

What was surprising, however, was that it took over an hour and a half of hand-for-hand play while 23-handed for a player to be eliminated.

Multiple players were saved from bubbling when they got there against hands that had them dominated. First Petiote moved in with seven-five and got looked up by Hughes with ace-five, only to spike a seven to double-up. At another table, Morusty's ace-six improved against an opponent's ace-jack to keep him alive.

But short stacks with dominated hands can't double every time, and the day ended when Sundberg held ace-king and called an opponent's shove with a weaker ace on an ace-high flop.

The Florida-based grinder had taken the chip lead a few orbits prior when he flopped trips and got his whole stack in against Petiote, who had a mere gutshot straight draw and couldn't improve. Petiote was left with a modest stack but managed to run it up to end the day in the top five.

Some of the players who didn't make it through Day 1b include Gil Levy, Heather Warde, Pom Souvannasoth, Brenda Miller, Rich Haskins and Casey Lutz.

After Day 1c, which kicks off Saturday, April 22 at noon, the remaining players from each starting flight will battle it out on Day 2 on Sunday, April 23, which will feature a live-streamed final table.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be back tomorrow for continued coverage of Event #1: $560 NLH at the bestbet Jacksonville Spring Series.

Morusty Doubles to Avoid Bubbling Day 2

Level 16 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante

World Series of Poker Circuit ring winner Michael Morusty open-shoved a stack of 31,000 from early position and the button re-shoved a bigger stack to get the hand heads-up.

Michael Morusty: {a-Spades}{6-Diamonds}
Opponent: {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}

Morusty was dominated and it look like he would not be making Day 2 when the flop came {10-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}. However, the {6-Spades} came from nowhere on the turn and he told the lead and held up after the {k-Clubs} river.

The hand is just one of a few recent hands where a short-stack has been at risk and dominated but found a way to win the pot.

"This is just f***ing sick!" someone yelled.

Petiote Hits Three-Outer to Stay Alive

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante

Lunique Petiote open-shoved a stack of 43,000 and a middle position player called to get the hand heads-up.

Lunique Petiote: {7-Spades}{5-Clubs}
Opponent: {a-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}

"Why can't I be live?!" Petiote groaned when he saw he was dominated.

But a seven in the window on the flop of {j-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} gave him the lead, but he had to dodge another diamond. He did so as the board finished out {j-Hearts}{5-Spades} and he doubled up to stay alive.

"Man, how do you survive that?!" someone asked.

"I practice at home," he replied.

Sundberg Doubles Through Petiote to Take Chip Lead

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Matthew Sundberg
Matthew Sundberg

In the biggest pot of the night so far, Lunique Petiote opened in late position and Matthew Sundberg defended from the big blind.

Sundberg checked on the flop of {q-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{6-Clubs} and Petiote bet 15,000. Sundberg check-raised to 45,000 and Petiote called.

Sundberg bet 55,000 on the {j-Spades} turn with just about 65,000 behind and Petiote raised all-in with Sundberg covered. Sundberg quickly called.

Matthew Sundberg: {9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}
Lunique Petiote: {a-Hearts}{10-Spades}

Players in the tournament were shocked to see that Petiote only had a gutshot, but he had outs to crack the trips of Sundberg. But the river brought an innocent {8-Clubs} to send the massive pot to Sundberg, who stood up from his seat and breathed a huge sigh.

"If a king came on the river, you would have never seen me again," he said.
