News in Brief

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante

Here are some news briefs from the EPT Barcelona Main Event.

  • Sebatiian Ruthenberg emptied the clip on Romain Feriolo on Romain Feriolo through a {4-Spades}{2-Clubs}{5-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} board. The third bullet made the Frenchman fold. The German Team Pro is on more than 70,000 now.
  • Melanie Weisner took down a 14,000 chip pot when her {j-Hearts}[{7-Hearts} was good on a {7-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{k-Spades}{j-Diamonds} board.
  • Micky Peterson managed to get Chris Moorman off a hand preflop. He had to six-bet to 23,200 to do so though after Moorman had five-bet to 14,500.

The Ol' King-Dewey

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante

We picked up the action on the flop, heads up between Sebastian Ruthenberg (cutoff) and Ramon Cserei (button). We'll infer that Ruthenberg was the preflop raiser based on the positions, but we can't say for certain.

In any event, we picked up the action live as the dealer spread out a {4-Hearts} {K-Hearts} {8-Spades} flop. Ruthenberg checked and called a bet of 2,500, and he check-called another 4,500 after the {2-Hearts} turn. The river came the {K-Clubs}, and Ruthenberg checked a third time to let Cserei fire another 8,500 at the pot. The check-raise came finally, and Ruthenberg moved all in for an additional 11,650 on top. Cserei didn't like it, but he eventually made the call with a chance at the knockout.

Showdown
Cserei: {6-Hearts} {7-Hearts}
Ruthenberg: {K-Spades} {2-Clubs}

Ruthenberg's four-out full house came in on the river, and he was able to get the maximum value against Cserei's flush. With it comes the double up, moving the German Team PokerStars Pro up to about 60,000 now.

Another Loss for Selbst

A player under the gun raised to 1,125 and Vanessa Selbst called from the cutoff seat. The small blind also called and the flop came down {J-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{2-Spades}. The small blind checked and the next player bet 2,500. Selbst called and the small blind folded.

The turn was the {10-Diamonds} and both players checked to see the {8-Spades} fall on the river. After her opponent checked, Selbst fired 5,200. Her opponent made the call and Selbst announced, "Ace high." Her opponent then showed the {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} and Selbst mucked.

Losing this pot dropped Selbst back to 110,000 in chips, but she still looks to be the current chip leader.

Frietez Up to His Old Tricks

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante

Ivan Frietez won the EPT Gran Final last season but didn't make too many friends along the way due to throwing a few angles along the way. He's not making too many friends at his table today either.

There was a raise to 1,100 that Frietez three-bet up to 3,400 before Yuliyan Nikolaev Kolev moved all-in for 10,500 from the blinds. The original aggressor folded to leave the decision on the Venezuelan. He has some polished rocks with him that seems to help him make a decision and he threw them twice and studied there pattern before nodding at the dealer and calling.

Neither player wanted to reveal their hand and the dealer grew frustrated. Kolev broke first and tabled {j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}. It was now that Frietez revealed his hand -- {k-Clubs}{k-Clubs}.

The board ran {4-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{3-Spades}{10-Spades}{4-Spades} to see the kings hold. Frietez is up to 62,000 but he had to endure complaints from his table mates as he stacked his chips, now valued at 62,000.

Busquet Picks Up Some Chips; Still Fighting Short Stack

Anatoly Gurtovoy limped from under the gun and Simon Olof Hanninger limped from middle position. Olivier Busquet was in a later middle position and raised to 2,200. Everyone folded back to the original limper Gurtovoy. He folded and then Hanninger followed suit.

Breaking News: Vanessa Selbst Loses a Pot

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante

Vanessa Selbst

We were starting to think that Vanessa Selbst sold her soul so as to not lose any pots today, but she just proved us wrong by losing one.

The action was three-way to a {9-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} flop. Michiel Brummelhuis was the preflop aggressor and checked from UTG. Selbst was in the next seat and led for 2,400. The third player folded but Brummelhuis check-raised to 6,500.

Selbst studied her opponent and then set him in for his 28,425 remaining. He snap called with {8-Hearts}{8-Spades} for middle set. Selbst winced before she even saw his holding and then tabled {6-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for a pair and straight draw. The {a-Spades}{k-Clubs} turn and river didn't change anything and the Dutchman scooped.
