Hands #1 - #5: Owen Drops, Reichenstein Rises Clear

Uri Reichenstein
Uri Reichenstein

Hand #1: Adam Owen made it 450,000 from UTG with {6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}. Uri Reichenstein called in the hijack position with {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}. The flop of {7-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{A-Hearts} saw Owen make it 500,000 to play, and Reichenstein called. The turn of {3-Diamonds} saw Owen check, and Reichenstein decided to do the same. The river of {7-Diamonds} sees both players check and Reichenstein rakes in a decent opening pot.

Hand #2: Zorlu Er raised to 450,000 with {J-Hearts}{10-Clubs} on the button. Owen defended his big blind with {Q-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} . Er made it 625,000 to see a turn and Owen folded. The British player has lost chips in the first two hands.

Hand #3: Er raised to 475,000 with {5-Spades}{5-Hearts} from the cut-off. Malec called from the big blind with {J-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} . The flop of {7-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{K-Clubs} was checked by both, but the turn of {3-Spades} saw Malec lead for 375,000. Er called to see a river of {J-Hearts} , which Malec again bet on, having made two pair. He made it 650,000, and Er called! Er pays off Malec's hand and that is a boost for the Polish player very early on.

Hand #4: Adam Owen raised to 450,000 from the button {K-Hearts}{3-Spades} but Uri Recihenstein called with{A-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}. The flop of {A-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{2-Diamonds} saw both players check, but the turn of {9-Clubs} saw Reichenstein bet 475,000 and that got a fold. Owen has played three hands and lost three hands. There have only been four.

Hand #5: Reichenstein limps in the small blind with {7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} and De Rooij checks in the big with {9-Hearts}{6-Spades} . The flop of {10-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} and a 325,000 bet from Reichenstein takes in Down. He has extended his lead in the early hands.

Can Adam Owen Become EPT Champion?

Welcome to the final day of the 2016 PokerStars.es European Poker Tour Barcelona Main Event! Of the record-breaking starting field of 1785 players, only seven hopefuls remain in the hunt for the EPT title and the incredible first price of €1,122,800. They're are already guaranteed a massive payday of €230,950, but today, life-changing money is on the line.

Germany's Uri Reichenstein holds the chiplead with 11,300,000 (57 bb), but it's just less than one big blind that's separating him and Holland's Thomas de Rooij, who bagged 11,180,000 after five days of play. The international final table is completed by England's Adam Owen (9,800,000 / 49 bb), Sebastian Malec from Poland (7,330,000 / 37 bb), Turkey's Zorlu Er (7,090,000 / 35 bb), Andreas Chalkiadakis, hailing from Greece (5,015,000 / 25 bb), and local hero Harcharan Dogra Dogra, who will start with 1,700,000 and holds the shortstack with 9 bb.

By now, the remaining seven are quite familiar with each other, as yesterday already saw plenty of final table play. It was Stephen Malone from Ireland being the first to go. In hand #5, Malone ran pocket kings into Er's ace-king, only to saw the dreaded ace appear on the river (9th - €123,450). Shortly after, Bulgarian Pavel Plesuv lost jacks versus Reichenstein's eights when the latter flopped a set, and finished 8th (€165,950). In total, 42 hands were played at the final table before play was halted for the night.

Action resumes at 1 p.m. local time, and the live stream with hole cards will be on a security delay of one hour. The blinds will start at 100,000 / 200,000 and a 25,000-chip ante, with levels of 90 minutes being played. The PokerNews live reporting team is in Casino Barcelona to cover the action hand-for-hand until the EPT 13 Barcelona Main Event champion has been crowned!

Seat 7: Sebastian Malec, 21, Warsaw/Poland, PokerStars qualifier (7,330,000)

Sebastian Malec
Sebastian Malec

Polish player Sebastian Malec qualified for the EPT13 Barcelona Main Event for just €27. The 21-year-old from Warsaw played chess competitively from the age of six to 15 but when his chess coach travelled to Las Vegas for the 2010 World Series of Poker, Malec started following the poker scene. He immediately fell in love with the game - and, in particular, the European Poker Tour. In 2014, Malec went to study at the University of Warwick and, while there, took the opportunity to visit EPT11 London. "It was only two hours away so I thought why not? I was reading literally every update from the tournaments back then and watching all the live streams," he said.

At EPT London, Malec was thrilled to meet his poker heroes for the first time, players such as Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier, Phillip Gruissem and Dominik Panka - and get his picture taken with them. Here at EPT Barcelona, he’s been playing alongside Mercier in person - a dream come true for the excited youngster. Malec's EPT Main Event debut came last year in Barcelona when he made it to 76th place for €15,600 - his biggest cash until today. He also played last season's EPT Malta and EPT Dublin Main Events. He's planning to move to Maastricht just after EPT13 Barcelona. "I'm going to change direction. My subject in England was math and statistics but I'm going to study art and culture in the Netherlands," says Malec, who has a strong passion for movies.

Zorlu Er
Zorlu Er

Zorlu Er is here at EPT Barcelona with his poker-playing son, also called Zorlu – in fact it was Zorlu Junior’s idea to come here. The 24-year-old said: “My dad is very talented, a really clever man. He’s been playing poker for about forty years – at first it was just draw poker, but he took up Texas Hold’em about ten years ago.”

According to Zorlu Junior, his father didn’t want to come to Barcelona but was eventually persuaded to by his son who’s just graduated from university in construction engineering. He said: “My dad doesn’t like beaches and, if he goes on holiday, he likes it to be closer to home – somewhere like Bodrum or Cyprus. But I wanted to come to the EPT. We both entered the Main Event but I bust before the money.

My father owns a Texas Hold’em club in our home town and coaches people as well. They don’t play for money – it’s an association and they have a league – it can only be Texas Hold’em though which is considered a mind sport in Turkey. He also plays tournaments and cash games in Northern Cyprus. My mother died when I was only one so it’s always just been my Dad and me. Poker is our passion and I’m very proud of what’s he’s achieved here.”

Thomas De Rooij
Thomas De Rooij

Poker is Thomas De Rooij's main source of income but he doesn't intend to become a full-time poker pro. The 23-year-old business economy student from Groningen is focusing on his studies for now and about to finish his bachelor's degree. De Rooij is enjoying the game and doesn't feel nervous at all: "Even if I bust now, it's already for a lot of money so I don't stress out. That might be my advantage on the final table," said the Dutchman.

A big score in this record-breaking EPT Main Event would allow him to travel to more live tournaments. De Rooij's only reported live cash to date was victory in the Grand Live Split Main Event for €34,800 last October. De Rooij only plays online twice a week but has a $70k+ result to his name. He loves animals and has five goldfish back home. He's also a passionate football fan, supporting Feyenoord Rotterdam. He plays football actively as well, both indoor and outdoor.
