Late Casualties

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante

Among those to bust before the end of Day 1a were Joao Vieira, Anatoliy Filatov, Joe Elpayaa, Matt Stout and Shola Akindele-Deadman.

Akindele-Deadman faced the check-raise of Cesar Garcia on the {Q-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{6-Spades} flop and moved all in for her last 20 big blinds with {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}. Garcia had that beat with {9-Clubs}{6-Hearts} in the big blind and the {8-Diamonds} turn and {J-Clubs} river blanked.

Tobias Reinkemeier opened from middle position to 2,000. Shaun Deeb three-bet from the cutoff to 5,900, and Reinkemeier called. Both players checked it down on {J-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{7-Spades}. Reinkemeier showed {2-Spades}{2-Clubs}, but Deeb had {K-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for a pair of sixes. Deeb will end the day having amassed one of the largest stacks in the room.

Game Over for Carrel

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Charlie Carrel
Charlie Carrel

In the previous hand, Charlie Carrel was under the gun and faced the bet of 20,000 by Koray Aldemir with the board reading {10-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}.

Carrel had less than that behind and started some small talk, then Aldemir called time on him which didn't help to ease the pain. Carrel eventually folded and the next hand provided more fireworks.

Athanasios Fergiatakis raised to 1,900 and Aldemir called from two seats over. Carrel then moved all in from the big blind and Fergiatakis asked for a count. The shove of the Brit was for 13,700 and Fergiatakis called.

Aldemir reraised all in and again the dealer was asked for a count. Aldemir's shove was for 55,000, and Fergiatakis called after quite some consideration to create a three-way all in and put two opponents at risk.

Carrel: {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}
Aldemir: {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}
Fergiatakis: {8-Clubs}{8-Spades}

"Oh wow, I am ahead?!" Carrel let out and the flop came {J-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{4-Spades}. On the {9-Spades} turn, he improved to a set while the {Q-Clubs} river initially let Fergiatakis celebrate. The Dutchman then realized that Aldemir had the nut straight and scooped the entire pot.

Appleby Cracks Vergeer's Kings

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante

Simon Appleby opened in early position to 1,700. Paul Vergeer three-bet in late position to 3,600, and Appleby called. The flop was {10-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}. Appleby checked, Vergeer bet 4,000, Appleby check-raised to 11,800, and Vergeer called.

On the {J-Clubs} turn, Appleby bet 15,000 and Vergeer moved all in. Appleby snap-called the rest of his stack off.

Paul Vergeer: {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}
Simon Appleby: {7-Spades}{6-Hearts}

Appleby's surprising seven-six off was ahead of Vergeer's kings, and the {4-Hearts} on the river didn't change that. Appleby scored a big double up, gobbling up most of Vergeer's chips in the process.

Chance Kornuth Chips Up Late on Day 1a

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante

On a turn of {3-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{9-Hearts} Kornuth check-called a bet of 4,500 from his opponent and the {6-Diamonds} was dealt on the river.

Kornuth thought for a moment, swirling his cards around before extending his arm nonchalantly and reached for a glass of red wine he had in the cup holder at his table. His opponent looked nonplussed as Kornuth pushed 9,200 forward.

His opponent thought for a while before calling. Kornuth turned over {k-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} and his opponent chuckled to himself, revealing a {9-Clubs} but nothing more.
