Popov Down From Peak

Level 2 : 100/100, 100 ante

Sergei Popov had started the day well but had been left short. IN a four-bet pot both he and Alexandr Savchenko put 4,000 in pre-flop and the pair checked the {2-Spades}{k-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} flop.

The turn was the {6-Hearts} and Savchenko check-called 1,500.

The river was the {9-Spades}. Savchenko checked and Popov moved all in for around 6,000. Savchenko tanked but eventually folded.

Sushant Short; Jiao Doubles

Level 2 : 100/100, 100 ante

"It's all happening at this table," Aditya Sushant said as we passed his table.

Wei Jiao was getting his stack counted out after doubling up through an opponent. Jiao held {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} and had rivered a set on a {6-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{4-Spades}{q-Hearts}{10-Spades} board to double up to a stack of over 60,000.

"I lost half my stack second hand," said Sushant who sits with just 10,000 midway through the second level of the day. But with all the action happening at his table, he will hope to earn a quick double up to get him back into contention.

Action River Boosts Popov

Level 2 : 100/100, 100 ante

On a straighty, flushy paired board of {k-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} Sergei Popov bet 4,300 into a pot of 5,200.

His opponent Eduard Barsegyan raised in position to 14,000 and Popov moved all in for 26,000. Barsegyan only had 12,000 behind so it was all in for his tournament life.

After a lengthy tank, he eventually let his hand go into the muck.

EPT Prague National Champion Mondrus in Action Early

Level 1 : 100/100, 0 ante
EPT Prague National Winner Boris Mondrus
EPT Prague National Winner Boris Mondrus

One of the more notable players amidst a sea of Russian players is Israeli player Boris Mondrus. Mondrus beat a field of 2,486 to win €382,750 ($435,705) in the EPT Prague National.

Arriving at his table, there was already a big pot of 6,500 in the middle between him and Uruguayan Jose Loignon. Loignon had checked the {8-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{q-Spades}{a-Spades}{10-Diamonds} board to Mondrus who had bet 11,000.

"Big over bet," said Loignon.

"Bluff," said Mondrus gesturing towards the chips.

Eventually Loignon open-folded {q-Hearts}{7-Spades} for two pair. "Maybe I got bluffed," he said. "On the river, he maybe has a straight or higher two pair."

Final Chance to Make EPT National Day 2

EPT Sochi National Day 1c
EPT Sochi National Day 1c

With a total of 50 players already through to Day 2 of the RUB 77,000 EPT Sochi National, today is the final chance for any other players to join them.

Leading the way at this stage is Andrey Lukyanov who finished atop Day 1a with 544,000, clear of Andrey Chernokoz and Yaniv Peretz who finished Day 1b as joint chip leaders with 311,500.

Yesterday's flight is expected to eclipse the 249 from Day 1a, with total entrants of the two starting flights combined making a total of 333. This means that last year's figure of 705 looks set to be potentially beaten.

Players start with 30,000 in chips and will play eight 40 minute levels of unlimited re-entries. Late registration will then close, and play will continue until 15% of the field remains. They will then all be in the money and advance to Day 2.

There will be a 20-minute break after every third level, and a 60-minute dinner break after Level 8.

With the action continue to hot up here at Casino Sochi, stay tuned to PokerNews for all the updates from the tournament floor.
