Derek Lerner Chipping Up

Derek Lerner just saw his stack grow to around 35,000 when he won a race with pocket jacks against {K-Spades} {Q-Clubs}. That race got a little close after the {8-Diamonds} {6-Spades} {7-Spades} flop and the {4-Spades} on the turn, but when the {7-Hearts} fell on the river Lerner added substantially to his stack as we play into the night.

Friday Night in Mar del Plata

It's a festive Friday night in Mar del Plata. The casino is a little more crowded tonight since the weekend has officially begun.

Over in the casino, there was some sort of ruckus and a couple of gamblers got into a heated disagreement. The majority of railbirds cleared out of the tournament area and rushed over to the roulette tables to sweat the potential fistfight. The fracas was quickly broken up and the railbirds returned to the tournament.

A second chance tournament has been running all evening and that action is down to the final table. Team PokerStars Pro Maria "Maridu" Mayrinck went deep and cashed but she busted out when she ran into quads. Former Brazilian model Vanessa Machado advanced to the final table as one of the chipleaders and a large crowd gathered around her table.

Although Joe Hachem busted a little while ago, he's been sitting at an empty table while he's getting his back worked on by a masseuse.

The Dreaded Slowdown

It appears that the action is slowing down as play reaches midnight. There are 45 players remaining on Day 1b. A similar thing happened on Day 1a around the same time.

Marcelo Giorgetta Eliminates David Schechter

This is how one looks after winning a huge pot
This is how one looks after winning a huge pot
In perhaps the biggest pot of the tournament so far, Marcelo Giorgetta won a huge confrontation with David Schechter. With the board reading {9-Spades} {9-Diamonds} {8-Clubs} {7-Diamonds}, the two players exchanged raises until Schechter stacked up his chips and pushed them in the middle. Giorgetta almost instantly did the same, and when Schechter turned over {7-Spades} {8-Spades} for two pair (the nines on the board counterfeited him) Giorgetta laid his {J-Spades} {10-Spades} on the felt.

His straight held up when the river brought the {A-Spades} and as Schechter shook hands with his tablemates Giorgetta rocketed up to near the top of the leaderboard. He has about 105,000.

Joe Hachem Eliminated

Close on the heels of Humberto Brenes' elimination we've also just lost Joe Hachem. He'd been short all day, doubling up to a manageable stack only to lose a race shortly after. He was finally knocked out when all the chips went in the middle preflop and his {K-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds} was dominated by his opponent's {A-Spades} {K-Diamonds}. The board ran out {9-Clubs} {2-Spades} {2-Diamonds} {10-Spades} {5-Hearts} and Joe Hachem's tournament came to an end.

Humerto Brenes Eliminated

Humberto = Busto
Humberto = Busto
Humberto Brenes was short and moved all in. David Schechter wanted to call and paused for a few moments to think about his next move.

"I have a very good hand, Humberto," said Schechter.

"Please call. I want to double up," said Brenes.

After a couple of minutes in the tank, Schechter called.

Schechter: {A-Spades} {J-Spades}
Brenes: {A-Clubs} {5-Clubs}

The flop was {A-Diamonds} {K-Spades} {Q-Clubs}. The turn was the {7-Diamonds} and the river was the {2-Spades}. Schechter won the pot and Brenes headed to the rail. Before he left, Schechter shook his hand and they embraced.

"It's was an honor to play with you," said a respectful Schechter.

David Schechter now has almost 40,000.

A Quick Marine Biology Lesson

Shushing the Shark
Shushing the Shark
Humberto Brenes' trademark is, of course, the shark. So it was a bit odd to see him at the table making noises that sounded a lot like, well, whalesong. The action was folded around to him in the cutoff and Humberto, who is almost as famous for his crooning as for his sharky card-cappers, starting making this downright eerie singsong "Oooohhh....ooooHHHH" sound as he counted out chips for a raise.

Brenes kept singing as the button and small blind folded around to David Schechter, who listened to Brenes' caterwauling before reaching for chips himself. Brenes started talking to Schechter, advising him not to call, and Schechter laughed and said, "No English! No Americano" to Brenes, who had switched to David's native language.

Schechter replaced the chips in his stack and said, in a good-natured way, "Because of that I'm going all in", and he pushed his stack into the pot. That, finally, quieted Humberto, who checked his cards, tallied up his stack, and then threw his cards into the muck.
